TRUMP IMPOSES TARIFFS ON ALLIES… President Trump announced yesterday that the U.S. would impose a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum at midnight last night for the European Union, Canada and Mexico. The news stunned U.S. allies. Mexico responded with plans to levy penalties on a list of U.S. goods and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said the EU would do the same. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada would impose its own steel and aluminum tariffs against the U.S. Trump’s announcement prompted the Dow Jones Industrial Average to fall more than 250 points.

TRUMP TO PARDON FELON DINESH D’SOUZA… President Trump is planning to give a full pardon to right-wing political commentator and author Dinesh D’Souza. D’Souza pleaded guilty in federal court in May 2014 to making an illegal campaign contribution to the 2012 U.S. Senate campaign of Wendy Long. He has also been accused of domestic abuse.

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS DIOCESE SETTLES… The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has announced a $210 million settlement with 450 victims of clergy sexual abuse as part of its plan for bankruptcy reorganization. A total of $210,290,724 will go into a fund to pay survivors, with the amount for each to be determined. A formal reorganization plan will now be submitted to a bankruptcy judge for approval, and then it will be sent to the victims for a vote.

CALIFORNIA ELECTRIFICATION PROJECTS… The California Public Utilities Commission announced plans to invest $738 million in transportation electrification projects across the state as a part of its 2030 goal for clean air and greenhouse gas reduction. Plans to be implemented over the next five years include setting up charging stations and infrastructure to support electric passenger vehicles and trucks. The program will provide rebates to residents for installing charging stations at their homes and will also set up infrastructure at several sites to support the electrification of medium- or heavy-duty vehicles.

FLOODING IN VIRGINIA… Heavy rains from subtropical Storm Alberto brought severe flooding that washed out bridges, damaged homes and closed schools in Virginia yesterday. At least one death has been blamed on the flooding and authorities say the death toll may rise as rescuers conduct searches. Some of the most damaging flooding occurred in Albemarle County and Madison County.

JUDGE SIDES AGAINST ‘SESAME STREET’ IN SUIT... A Manhattan federal judge has denied a request by producers of the children’s show “Sesame Street” for a temporary restraining order to halt ads for Melissa McCarthy’s new film, “The Happytime Murders.” The adult comedy features puppets similar to those used on a number of television shows. In its lawsuit filed last week, Sesame Workshop complained that the movie inflicts “devastating and irreparable injury” to the Sesame Street name.

IN THEATERS… In “Action Point,” a daredevil designs and operates his own theme park with his friends. Johnny Knoxville and Brigette Lundy-Paine star in the R-rated comedy. In “Adrift,” a young couple’s chance encounter leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime as they face one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin star in the PG-13 film.

GOLDEN STATE 124 – Cleveland 114 (OT)… The Warriors outlasted the Cavaliers in a back-and-forth contest and withstood a 51-point effort by LeBron James. Stephan Curry led Golden State with 29 points. Kevin Durant added 26 points and Klay Thompson tossed in 24. Game 2 is Sunday in Oakland.

Chi. Cubs 5 – N.Y. METS 1… Jose Quintana (6-4) pitched three-hit ball over six shutout innings as the Cubs downed the Mets. Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer.

ST. LOUIS 10 – Pittsburgh 8… Pinch-hitter Luke Voit delivered a two-run single and Yairo Munoz belted a walkoff three-run homer as the Cardinals rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to upend the Pirates. Munoz also capped a four-run first with a two-run double.

Philadelphia 2 – L.A. DODGERS 1… Aaron Nola (7-2) limited the Dodgers to a run on two hits over seven innings in outdueling Clayton Kershaw. Jorge Alfaro knocked in both Philadelphia runs with a single and a double.

ATLANTA 4 – Washington 2… Sean Newcombe (6-1) held the Nationals two two runs on four hits over seven innings. Oscar Albiees went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

SAN DIEGO 8 – Miami 3… Eric Hosmer drove in three runs with a pair of singles and rookie Christian Villanueva hit his 15th homer with a runner aboard as the Padres ripped the Marlins. Jordan Lyles (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings.

DETROIT 6 – L.A. Angels 2… The Tigers put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and coasted past the Angels. Ronny Rodriguez sparked the uprising with a bases-clearing triple in his major league debut.

OAKLAND 7 – Tampa Bay 3… Daniel Mengden (6-4) allowed three runs on six hits over eight innings as the Athletics salvaged the finale of the four-game series. Matt Joyce drilled a two-run homer. Matt Olson and Matt Joyce added solo homers.

Cleveland 9 – MINNESOTA 8… Francisco Lindor doubled twice and belted a pair of homers, including a tiebreaking solo shot in the top of the eighth inning that sent the Indians past the Twins. Lindor finished with four RBIs. Jose Ramirez also went deep for Cleveland.

HOUSTON 4 – Boston 2… Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Tony Kemp’s infield single scored J.D. Davis with the go-ahead run in the fourth as the Astros topped the Red Sox. Lance McCullers Jr. gave up two runs on four hits over six innings.

SEATTLE 6 – Texas 1… Wade LeBlanc (1-0) held the Rangers to a run on four hits over five innings. Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer and lifted a sacrifice fly.

N.Y. Yankees – BALTIMORE (ppd)… Rain in Baltimore forced postponement of last night’s Yankees-Orioles game. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on July 9.
