The Rundown for June 13, 2018

PRIMARY ELECTIONS… Voters in five states headed to the polls yesterday for primary elections. One of the more surprising races was in South Carolina, where former governor Mark Sanford appears to have lost his congressional seat after falling to state representative Katie Arrington in the Republican primary. South Carolina Republican Governor Henry McMaster faces a runoff after failing to muster the required 50 percent vote to win the party nod outright. Democratic State Senator Jennifer Wexton won a six-way primary in Virginia’s 10th District and will challenge Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock in November. In another big Virginia race, Republican Corey Stewart, a Minnesota transplant who has been criticized for his attacks on illegal immigrants, anti-semitic remarks and support for Confederate monuments, won the Republican U.S. Senate primary and next faces Democratic Senator Tim Kaine. In Nevada, Democrats nominated Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak to take on Republican attorney general in November’s governor’s race. In the race for Nevada’s 3rd District House seat, Danny Tarkanian won the Republican primary and will go up against philanthropist Susie Lee in November.

TRUMP TO LIFT SANCTIONS ON NORTH KOREA… North Korean state media reported yesterday that President Trump has agreed to lift sanctions against the communist country. North Korea’s official KCNA news agency said Trump had also offered security guarantees to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, while Kim had agreed only to “step-by-step” denuclearization—and only if “the U.S. side takes genuine measures for building trust.” Trump, who is facing heavy criticism for making too many concessions without obtaining from Kim any specific commitment to denuclearization, also offered to suspend joint U.S.-South Korean military drills to appease Kim in a move that came as a shock to both the Pentagon and the U.S. South Korean allies. North Korea also has announced that Kim has accepted Trump’s invitation to visit the U.S.

McCABE SUES JUSTICE DEPARTMENT... Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, claiming it has been withholding documents relating to McCabe’s firing earlier this year. Lawyers representing McCabe believe the documents haven’t been turned over because they could be used against the Justice Department in future lawsuits. McCabe was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in March after FBI and DOJ officials accused him of lying about his interactions with a journalist.

TRUMP CONSIDERS TENT CITIES FOR CHILD MIGRANTS… The Trump administration is considering building tent cities to house unaccompanied child migrants that are being detained. The current Department of Health and Human Services’ shelters, which house more than 10,000 children, are 95 percent full. Administration officials plan to visit a proposed facility at Fort Bliss Army base in Texas that would hold between 1,000 and 5,000 children. Dyess and Goodfellow Air Force Bases are other sites under consideration.

NEW JERSEY TIGHTENING GUN LAWS… New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will sign a half-dozen bills to tighten gun laws today. The state will adopt measures put together following February’s massacre in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead. Among the measures is one that would require the seizure of firearms when a mental health professional determines someone poses a threat.

JUDGE APPROVES ATT-TIME WARNER MERGER… A federal judge yesterday approved the $85.4 billion AT&T-Time Warner merger. The Justice Department tried to block the merger in an antitrust suit it filed in November. In handing down his ruling, Judge Richard J. Leon of United States District Court in Washington said the Justice Department had not proved that the acquisition would lead to fewer choices for consumers and higher prices for television and internet services.

CUBS FANS TO GET EDDIE VEDDER RECORDS... Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will be giving away copies of his new 7-inch vinyl single to anyone who buys special tickets to the Chicago Cubs July 6 game against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The record features Vedder’s 2007 Cubs song “All the Way” on one side and Steve Goodman’s 1984 tribute “Go Cubs, Go” on the other. The Cubs say a limited number of the tickets are available online.
