The Rundown for July 13, 2018

TRUMPS IN UK… President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived in the UK yesterday among widespread protests. The Trumps were welcomed to Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, England by British Prime Minister Theresa May on the first day of their UK visit. The visit came as the British tabloid The Sun published an interview with Trump in which the president blasted May over her Brexit negotiations and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Trump admitted the planned protests in the city left him feeling “unwelcome” in London.

STRZOK HOUSE TESTIMONY… There were fireworks in Congress yesterday when FBI agent Peter Strzok fended off rowdy questioning by Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Government Reform Committees. Strzok defended his actions in investigating Russian interference in the 2006 presidential elections as Republicans questioned his bias over the anti-Trump text messages he sent. The hearing lasted nearly 10 hours and included several incidents of shouting and angry exchanges among lawmakers.

NORTH KOREA NO-SHOWS AT MEETING WITH U.S… North Korean representatives scheduled to attend a planned meeting to discuss the return of the remains of American soldiers left U.S. officials hanging at the inter-Korean border when they didn’t show up. The meeting has now been rescheduled for Sunday. Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea re-escalated during Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit last week. Pyongyang accused Pompeo of making a “unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization.”

ATT-TIME WARNER MERGER APPEALED… The Justice Department has filed notice that it will appeal last month’s court ruling that allowed a merger between AT&T and Time Warner. Judge Richard Leon ruled that AT&T could acquire Time Warner for $85.4 billion without conditions in June. However, Makan Delrahim, assistant attorney general in the DOJ’s antitrust division, decided to file the appeal on the grounds that the market would be “less competitive and less innovative.”

JOHNSON & JOHNSON TO PAY UP… Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay a record $4.69 billion to 22 women who alleged the company’s talc-based products contain asbestos and caused them to develop ovarian cancer. The verdict handed down in the Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis included $550 million in compensatory damages and $4.14 billion in punitive damages. J&J denies both that its talc products cause cancer and that they ever contained asbestos.
