The Rundown for August 29, 2018

PRIMARIES… Voters went to the polls for primaries in Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma yesterday. In one of the biggest surprises, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum captured the Democratic nomination for Florida governor and will face Republican Ron DeSantis. In an Arizona race for Senate, Martha McSally breezed past Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio to capture the Republican primary. She will face Democrat Kyrsten Sinema in November. In Oklahoma’s runoff election to replace Governor Mary Fallin — who is leaving due to term limits — Kevin Stitt captured the GOP nod and will face Democrat Drew EEdmonsonand Libertarian Chris Powell in November. Kevin Hern defeated longtime Tulsa prosecutor Tim Harris in Oklahoma’s GOP primary runoff for the state’s only open congressional seat. Hern will face Democratic nominee Tim Gilpin in November. The seat was previously held by Congressman Jim Bridenstine, who left to become administrator of NASA. Oklahoma’s race for Attorney General was too close to call, as Mike Hunter was leading Tulsa attorney Gentner Drummond by fewer than 300 votes. The winner will face Democrat Mark Myles in November.

PUERTO RICO RAISES MARIA DEATH TOLL… Puerto Rico’s government raised its official Hurricane Maria death toll to 2,975 yesterday following the release of a new estimate. The Puerto Rican government released an original total of 64 deaths in December 2017. Officials emphasize that the new death toll is only an approximation and an investigation is ongoing.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES ON THE RISE… A report released yesterday by the Center for Disease Control claims three common sexually transmitted diseases increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2017. The CDC report found there were nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis diagnosed in the U.S. last year. Chlamydia was the most common condition reported to the CDC, with more than 1.7 million cases diagnosed in 2017.

CALIFORNIA ELIMINATES MONEY BAIL REQUIREMENT… California Governor Jerry Brown yesterday signed legislation that eliminates the money bail requirement for Californians to be released from jail while they await trial. People arrested on felony charges will be given a risk assessment to determine whether they could be released from jail with an ankle monitoring device. Supporters of the legislation said it would eliminate disparities in release rates based on wealth.

POLICE OFFICER CONVICTED OF MURDER… A jury in Texas yesterday found a white former policeman guilty of murder in the fatally shooting of a black teenager in a moving car last year in a Dallas suburb. Within days of the shooting, the Balch Springs Police Department fired 38-year-old Roy Oliver for violating department policy. 15-year-old Jordan Edwards was shot in the head after Oliver and another officer responded to reports of underage drinking at a house party.

ENTERTAINMENT
MATT SMITH JOINS ‘STAR WARS’… Actor Matt Smith has signed onto the cast of “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which is currently in production in the U.K. “The Crown” star joins returning cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. Additionally, Billy Dee Williams is reprising his role as Lando Calrissian and Carrie Fisher will be featured as Leia Organa in the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels will reprise his role at C-3PO.

A FINAL GLIMPSE OF ARETHA… Fans got their final look at Aretha Franklin yesterday as her body lay in repose. Franklin died of pancreatic cancer last week at the age of 76 in her Detroit home. Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, Ronald Isley and Stevie Wonder will be among those who perform at her funeral on Friday at Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple. Speakers will include former President Bill Clinton.

Washington 5 – PHILADELPHIA 4… The Nationals erased a 3-0 deficit on their way past the Phillies. Carlos Rodon hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.

CINCINNATI 9 – Milwaukee 7… The Reds built a 6-0 lead after their first two at-bats and held off the Brewers. Jose Peraza went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and four runs scored. Scooter Gennett had three hits and two RBIs.

ST. LOUIS 5 – Pittsburgh 2… Jack Flaherty (8-6) held the Pirates to a run on four hits over seven innings and the Cardinals continued their late-season push for a playoff spot. Jose Martinez and Tyler O’Neil hit two-run homers.

SAN FRANCISCO 1 – Arizona 0… Gorkys Hernandez singled home Steven Duggar with the game’s only run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Giants outlasted the Diamondbacks. The game featured a duel between San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner and his counterpart Clay Buccholz, but neither got a decision.

N.Y. Mets – CHI. CUBS (suspended)… Last night’s Mets-Cubs game in Chicago was suspended in the 10th inning with the game tied 1-1 due to rain. The game will resume this afternoon.

AL SCORES
N.Y. YANKEES 5 – Chi. White Sox 4… The Yankees came from four runs down in the sixth inning to edge the White Sox. Neil Walker came through with a walkoff pinch-hit solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Miguel Andujar and Aaron Hicks hit two-run homers for New York.

BALTIMORE 12 – Toronto 5… The Orioles used a 17-hit attack to pound the Blue Jays. Tim Beckham belted a three-run homer. Craig Gentry homered with a runner aboard and singled in a run. Chris Davis also drove in three runs.

CLEVELAND 8 – Minnesota 1… Carlos Carrasco (16-7) pitched four-hit ball over 7-2/3 scoreless innings and struck out 11 as the Indians breezed past the Twins. Jose Ramirez had a couple of hits and knocked in three runs.

Oakland 4 – HOUSTON 3… Nick Martini singled home Ramon Laureano with a tie-breaking run in the top of the ninth inning and the Athletics held on to edge the Astros. Matt Olsen put Oakland on the board with a three-run homer in the third.

KANSAS CITY 6 – Detroit 2… Adalberto Mondesi’s homer to lead off the bottom of the third inning sparked a five-run rally and the Royals cruised past the Tigers. Hunter Dozier went 2-for-3 with a two-run double. Jake Junis (7-12) gave up two runs on six hits in a complete-game victory.

INTERLEAGUE SCORES
BOSTON 8 – Miami 7… J.D. Martinez raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Eduardo Nunez’s infield grounder and the Red Sox outslugged the Marlins. Nunez homered with the bases empty for Boston. Jackie Bradley Jr. went 2-for-3 with a two-run single.

ATLANTA 9 – Tampa Bay 5…Tyler Flowers hit a two-run homer and Ender Inciarte added a solo shot during a four-run bottom of the eighth inning that sent the Braves past the Rays. Ozzie Albies went 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

L.A. Dodgers 8 – TEXAS 4… Manny Machado had a couple of hits and drove in four runs to lead the Dodgers past the Rangers. Brian Dozier hit his 20th homer with the bases empty and singled home a run.

Colorado 3 – L.A. ANGELS 2… Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the top of the inning, Ian Desmond lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh and the Rockies hung on to down the Angels. Kyle Freeland (12-7) surrendered a run on five hits over six innings. The victory moved Colorado into a first-place tie with Arizona atop the NL West.

SAN DIEGO 2 – Seattle 1… Jacob Nix (2-2) took a shutout into the ninth inning and reliever Kirby Yates came on to record the final two outs in the Padres’ defeat of the Mariners. Travis Jankowski smacked a solo homer. Hunter Renfroe singled home a run.
