TRUMP WANTS TO CANCEL RAISES… President Trump announced yesterday that he plans to cancel an automatic pay raise for federal workers because of the “nation’s fiscal situation.” The policy would have brought an automatic pay raise next year to about 1.8 million people. Trump said federal agency budgets could not withstand such increases as they took the nation off a “fiscally sustainable course.”

TRUMP THREATENS TO WITHDRAW U.S. FROM WTO… President Trump threatened to withdraw the U.S. from the World Trade Organization over its treatment of America yesterday during an interview with Bloomberg News. Trump called the 1994 agreement to establish the WTO “the single worst trade deal ever made.” The WTO was established to provide rules for global trade and resolve disputes between countries.

7 DEAD IN NEW MEXICO CRASH… Seven people were killed in New Mexico yesterday when a Greyhound passenger bus crashed head-on with a semi-trailer truck that jumped a median strip on Interstate 40 near the New Mexico border. Witnesses told state police that the semi-truck blew a tire before it swerved into oncoming traffic and into the path of the bus. More than 30 people were transferred to nearby hospitals with injuries.

CALIFORNIA PASSES NET NEUTRALITY BILL… California lawmakers took one more step toward imposing net neutrality laws on internet providers yesterday. The state Assembly voted 58-17 to pass net neutrality bill SB 822, which imposes the nation’s strictest protections on internet providers. The action is a response to the Trump administration’s repeal of net neutrality laws adopted under the Obama administration in 2015.

MAN ARRESTED FOR BOSTON GLOBE THREATS… A 68-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested yesterday for allegedly making repeated threats of violence against the Boston Globe newspaper. His threats included the catchphrase “the enemy of the people,” which President Trump has used to discredit the news media. Robert D. Chain was charged with one count of making threatening communications in interstate commerce, which comes with a potential penalty of as many as five years in prison. According to the FBI, Chain made at least 14 threatening phone calls to the Globe beginning August 10.

ENTERTAINMENT
EMMY ROSSUM LEAVING ‘SHAMELESS’… Actress Emmy Rossum has announced that she is leaving the Showtime series “Shameless” after the upcoming ninth season. Rossum has played Fiona Gallagher in the series since 2011. Her co-star is her on-screen patriarch William H. Macy.

IN THEATERS… In “Kin,” an ex-con and his adopted teenage brother are forced to go on the run with only a weapon of mysterious origin to protect themselves with as they’re chased by a vengeful criminal, the feds and a gang of otherworldly soldiers. The PG-13 film stars Myles Truitt and Jack Reynor.

Milwaukee 2 – CINCINNATI 1 (11 innings)… Lorenzo Cain hit a tie-breaking homer to lead off the top of the 11th inning and the Brewers made it stand in outlasting the Reds. Christian Yelich drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to force home the game’s first run.

ST. LOUIS 5 – Pittsburgh 0… John Gant (6-5) pitched three-hit ball over 5-2/3 innings and helped himself at the plate with a solo homer as the Cardinals blanked the Pirates. Harrison Bader also homered for St. Louis.

Chi. Cubs 5 – ATLANTA 4… Tommy La Stella came through with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning and the Cubs held on to edge the Braves. Wilson Contreras drove in a pair of runs for Chicago.

Arizona 3 – L.A. DODGERS 1…. David Peralta provided all the offense the Diamondbacks needed with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning. Robbie Ray (4-2) held the Dodgers to a run on four hits and struck out nine over 5-1/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO 3 – Colorado 2 (13 innings)… Franmil Reyes hit a walkoff two-out homer in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Padres topped the Rockies.

AL SCORES…
CLEVELAND 5 – Minnesota 3… Jason Kipnis belted a three-run homer during a four-run bottom of the sixth inning and the Indians downed the Twins. Mike Clevinger (10-7) allowed a pair of unearned runs on four hits and fanned nine over 6-2/3 innings

Detroit 8 – N.Y. YANKEES 7… Victor Martinez hit his second two-run homer of the night and Niko Goodrum followed with a go-ahead solo shot in the top of the ninth inning as the Tigers rallied past the Yankees. Jeimer Candelario and Ronny Rodriguez also homered for Detroit.

L.A. Angels 5 – HOUSTON 2… Andrew Heaney (8-8) scattered five hits over six scoreless innings and the Angels topped the Astros. Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-4 with a bases-clearing double.

Boston 9 – CHI. WHITE SOX 4… The Red Sox erased a 4-0 seventh-inning deficit on their way past the White Sox. Martinez blasted a three-run homer to cap a five-run top of the ninth inning. Mookie Betts’ two-run shot completed a four-run seventh.

OAKLAND 7 – Seattle 1… Wade LeBlanc (8-3) limited the Athletics to three hits over seven shutout innings and the Mariners breezed to the victory. Mitch Hanigar had a couple of hits, including a solo homer. Robinson Cano and Dee Gordon both had two hits, including run-scoring singles.

YANKEES ACQUIRE McCUTCHEN… The New York Yankees acquired five-time All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the San Francisco Giants yesterday in exchange for two minor league prospects. The 31-year-old McCutchen was batting .255 with 15 homers and 55 RBIs in 130 games for San Francisco. The Giants acquired him from Pittsburgh in a trade last December. He was named National League Most Valuable Player in 2013.
