‘SENIOR OFFICIAL’ WRITES ANTI-TRUMP NY TIMES OP-ED… The New York Times published an anonymous op-ed yesterday written by somebody claiming to be a senior White House official who is resisting the Trump administration from within. The essay warns that administration officials have discussed removing Trump from office by pronouncing him unfit and invoking the 25th Amendment. The essay also claims Trump’s erratic behavior is kept under control by “unsung heroes” in the White House. The Times says it knows who wrote the piece, but is keeping the author’s identity confidential.
MUELLER SUBPOENAES ROGER STONE ASSOCIATE… Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi to testify in front of a grand jury on Friday. Corsi will reportedly testify about discussions with former Trump advisor Roger Stone, whose ties WikiLeaks have been under investigation. Corsi previously worked with Alex Jones’ InfoWars.
SENATE PANEL QUESTIONS FACEBOOK, TWITTER LEADERS.. … Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey told the Senate Intelligence Committee yesterday that their platforms are fighting off hundreds of thousands of fake users every day. Both companies admitted that Russia-backed agents manipulated their platforms to influence the 2016 elections and testified about their efforts over the past year to prevent foreign interference. Dorsey said Twitter was “unprepared and ill-equipped” for the “weaponization” of debate.
FLIGHT QUARANTINED WITH ILL PASSENGERS … An Emirates airline flight that landed in New York yesterday was quarantined at JFK airport after about 100 people including some crew had complained of illness. Ten passengers were taken to hospitals but others refused treatment. Health officers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evaluated passengers during the quarantine.
GORDON DOWNGRADED AS IT HEADS TO MIDWEST… Tropical Storm Gordon has been downgraded after dropping 10 inches of rain in the Florida panhandle and bringing winds as strong as 78 mph that left thousands without power in Baldwin County, Alabama. The death of a 2-year-old child in Florida has been blamed on the storm, which was headed toward the Midwest. Heavy rainfall is expected in several states, including Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kansas.
ROY MOORE SUES OVER ‘WHO IS AMERICA?’ APPEARANCE… Former U.S. Senate candidate from Alabama Roy Moore has filed a $95 million defamation lawsuit against Sacha Baron Cohen over Moore’s appearance in the Showtime series “Who Is America?” The 71-year-old former chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court claims he was duped into appearing on the show and was falsely portrayed as a sex offender. Moore also named Showtime and its parent CBS Corp in his defamation suit and accused all three defendants of fraud and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
A&E TO AIR MONICA LEWINSKY DOCUMENTARY… A three-part A&E documentary series set to debut this fall will center on a discussion with Monica Lewinsky about her affair with President Bill Clinton. The series “The Impeachment of Bill Clinton” will include interviews with Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, and Juanita Broaddrick, who accused Clinton of sexual misconduct. The first show is scheduled to air on November 18.
PITTSBURGH 3 – Cincinnati 2… Jameson Taillon (12-9) held the Reds to a run on eight hits over five innings and the Pirates held off the Reds to complete a series sweep. Moran stroked a two-run double and Pittsburgh got RBI singles from Francisco Cervelli and Gregory Polanco.
St. Louis 7 – WASHINGTON 6… The Cardinals built a 6-0 sixth-inning lead and held on to edge the Nationals. Matt Adams homered twice and knocked in four runs. Yairo Munos also went deep.
MIAMI 2 – Philadelphia 1… Sandy Alcantara (2-0) pitched three-hit ball over seven innings as the Marlins clipped the Phillies. Austin Dean drove in both Miami runs.
N.Y. Mets 7 – L.A. DODGERS 3… Amed Rosario went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and two runs scored in leading the Mets past the Dodgers. Zack Wheeler (10-7) allowed three runs on three hits over seven innings.
Chi. Cubs 6 – MILWAUKEE 4… Daniel Murphy’s leadoff homer sparked a four-run top of the fourth inning and the Cubs downed the Brewers to extend their NL Central lead over Milwaukee to four games. Kyle Schwarber also homered with the bases empty. Ben Zobrist went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
COLORADO 5 – San Francisco 3… Trevor Story homered in his first three at-bats to power the Rockies past the Giants. DJ LaMahieu had a couple of hits, including a run-scoring single. Colorado increased its lead over the Dodgers to 1-1/2 games in the NL West.
CLEVELAND 3 – Kansas City 1… Cory Kluber limited the Royals to a run on two hits and struck out 10 in becoming the majors’ first 18-game winner. Jason Kipnis went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
TORONTO 10 – Tampa Bay 3… Aledmys Diaz’ three-run homer highlighted a seven-run bottom of the first inning and the Blue Jays coasted past the Rays. Billy McKinney added a solo blast. Kendry Morales went 3-for-4 and drove in a run.
L.A. Angels 9 – TEXAS 3… On a day he learned he would require Tommy John on his pitching arm, Shohei Ohtani went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and three RBIs to lead the Angels in their rout of the Rangers. Andrelton Simmons added his 10th homer with a runner aboard and singled home a run. Jaime Barria (10-8) held Texas to two hits over five shutout innings.
HOUSTON 9 – Minnesota 1… Alex Bregman knocked in five runs with a two-run homer and bases-clearing double and the Astros breezed past the Twins. Evan Gattis added his 25th homer with a runner on. Framber Valdez (3-1) allowed a run on five hits over 5-1/3 innings.
Detroit 10 – CHI. WHITE SOX 2… Ronny Rodriguez hit a two-run homer and the Yankees got solo blasts from Jeimer Candelario, Mikie Mahtook and JaCoby Jones in their pounding of the White Sox. Jordan Zimmermann (7-6) pitched two-hit ball over five scoreless innings.
OAKLAND 8 – N.Y. Yankees 2… The Athletics opened with a four-run bottom of the first inning and never looked back in downing the Yankees. Stephen Piscotty and Matt Chapman drove in two runs apiece. Mike Fiers (11-6) surrendered two runs on three hits over six innings.
SEATTLE 5 – Baltimore 2… Denard Span went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and RBI single as the Mariners downed the Orioles. Mitch Hanigar and Nelson Cruz also homered for Seattle. Mike Leake (9-9) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits over six innings.
Boston 9 – ATLANTA 8… The Red Sox overcame a 7-1 eighth-inning deficit to upend the Braves. Brandon Phillips celebrated his return to the major leagues by hitting a go-ahead two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning. Blake Swihart’s two-run double sparked a six-run eighth.
