HURRICANE FLORENCE STRENGTHENS AS STATES PREPARE… More than a million residents of the Carolinas are under mandatory evacuations that were issued yesterday in advance of Hurricane Florence making landfall on Thursday. An additional 245,000 people are expected to evacuate low-lying coastal regions of Virginia. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has called for a state of emergency as officials in his state prepare for storm flooding. Florence was upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane on yesterday after its maximum-sustained wind speeds approached 130 miles per hour and the National Hurricane Center warned that the hurricane could grow close to a Category 5 by the time it reaches the coast of South Carolina or North Carolina.

WHITE HOUSE SAYS KIM JONG UN WANTS TO MEET… White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said yesterday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has asked President Trump for a second meeting. Sanders said the administration is “already in the process of coordinating” it. Trump canceled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s scheduled trip to Pyongyang last month, saying he felt that both countries were “not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula” at the time.

ACCUSED RUSSIAN AGENT TO REMAIN JAILED… A federal judge yesterday firmly denied an effort by Lawyers representing accused Russian agent Maria Butina were firmly rejected yesterday in their effort to get their client released from jail pending trial. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan called Butina a “very real” flight risk and granted the prosecution’s request for a gag order in the case. The 29-year-old Butina pleaded not guilty after being charged in July with acting as an agent of the Russian government and conspiracy to take actions on behalf of Russia. She could face years in prison if convicted.

CALIFORNIA SEEKS TO ELIMINATE FOSSIL FUEL… California Governor Jerry Brown aims to eliminate fossil fuel use for electricity by 2045 in a bill he signed into law yesterday. The signing came days before the start of a global climate summit in San Francisco and serves as a rebuke to the Trump administration’s withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris climate accord. Hawaii has adopted a similar goal.

CONGRESSMAN RON DeSANTIS RESIGNS… Florida Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis has resigned his seat amid his bid to become Florida’s governor. DeSantis is locked in a tight race with Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum. DeSantis, who has represented Florida’s 6th Congressional District since 2013, has strongly aligned himself with President Trump.

ENTERTAINMENT
ACTOR DAVID HENRIE ARRESTED… Actor David Henrie was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport yesterday after screening agents found him in possession of a handgun. The “Wizards of Waverly Place” star was reportedly detained and taken to a nearby station. Following his release, Henrie explained that he “unintentionally brought a legally owned gun” to the airport and said he was “humiliated and embarrassed” that it even happened.

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN BATTLES CANCER AGAIN… Grammy-winning singer and actress Olivia Newton-John has revealed that she is in her third battle with cancer. The 69-year-old Australian told an interviewer that doctors discovered a tumor in her lower back last year. Newton-John was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and again in 2013. As an actress, she is best known for starring in the 1978 film musical “Grease.”

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
N.Y. Jets 48 – DETROIT 17… Rookie Sam Darnold recovered nicely after throwing a pick-six on the very first play of his NFL career and the Jets rolled past the Lions. The 21-year-old Darnold completed 16 of 21 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in his professional debut. Isaiah Crowell rushed for 102 yards and two scores on 10 carries.

L.A. Rams 33 – OAKLAND 13… The Rams scored 23 unanswered points in the second half to put away the Raiders and spoil the return of Jon Gruden as Oakland’s head coach. Jared Goff threw touchdown passes to Cooper Kupp and Todd Gurley. Gurley rushed for 108 yards on 20 carries.

CINCINNATI 10 – L.A. Dodgers 6… The Reds pounded the Dodgers to remain unbeaten after five games with them this season. Scooter Gennett went 4-for-5 and knocked in three runs. Eugenio Suarez homered with the bases empty. Joey Votto stroked a two-run double and Tucker Barnhart singled home two runs.

Milwaukee 3 – CHI. CUBS 2… Mike Moustakas raced home with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning and the Brewers held off the Cubs to pull within one game of Chicago atop the NL Central standings. Moustakas also scored on Orlando Arcia’s second-inning single. Wade Miley (4-2) gave up two runs on four hits over five innings in outdueling Cub starter Jon Lester (15-6).

ST. LOUIS 8 – Pittsburgh 7… Nick Adams belted a three-run homer and Harrison Bader’s second sacrifice fly of the game scored Marcell Ozuna with the decisive run during a four-run bottom of the eighth inning that carried the Reds past the Pirates. Paul DeJong produced a two-run double.

COLORADO 13 – Arizona 2… The Rockies used a 17-hit attack to wallop the Diamondbacks and move 1-1/2 games ahead of the second-place Dodgers in the NL West. Arizona fell 3-1/2 games off the lead. Trevor Story’s three-run homer capped a six-run bottom of the sixth inning. David Dahl unloaded a grand slam to spark a seven-run seventh.

PHILADELPHIA – Washington (ppd)… Rain in Philadelphia forced postponement of last night’s Phillies-Nationals game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Miami – N.Y. METS (ppd)… Rain in New York washed out yesterday’s Mets_marlins game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.

Atlanta 4 – SAN FRANCISCO 1… Sean Newcomb (12-8) held the Giants to a run on three hits over six innings as the Braves cruised to the win. Kurt Suzuki went 3-for-3 with an RBI single. Oscar Albies tripled home a run and scored on a Dansby Swanson sacrifice bunt in the top of the ninth inning.

AL SCORES
Houston 3 – DETROIT 2… Justin Verlander (15-9) was triumphant in his return to Detroit, as he held the Tigers to two runs on six hits and struck out 10 over seven innings in the Astros’ win. George Springer scored on a wild pitch and the Astros got run-scoring singles from Tyler White and Marwin Gonzalez in scoring all three runs in the top of the third inning.

TAMPA BAY 6 – Cleveland 5… Ji-Man Choi’s two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Rays over the Indians and extended their home winning streak to 12 games. Choi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jake Bauers homered with a runner aboard during a four-run second.

N.Y. Yankees 7 – MINNESOTA 2… Gary Sanchez had three hits, including a solo homer that broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning, and the Yankees pushed across six runs in the seventh to put away the Twins. J.A. Happ (16-6) pitched six-hit ball over six shutout innings. New York increased its lead over idle Oakland to three games in the race for the first AL wild-card spot.

KANSAS CITY 4 – Chi. White Sox 3 (10 innings)… Brian Goodwin scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning when White Sox reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away Alcides Escobar’s bunt attempt. Whit Merrifield and Ryan O’Hearn smacked solo homers for Kansas City.

Texas 5 – L.A. ANGELS 2… Joey Gallo had a couple of hits, including a two-run double and RBI single, as the Rangers cruised past the Angels. Ronald Guzman’s 15th homer was a two-run shot.
