FLORENCE ARRIVES… Hurricane Florence was downgraded to a Category 1 storm yesterday as it continued its approach toward the Carolinas. Surges as high as 10-feet were already recorded along the North Carolina coast and the storm was expected to make landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, at dawn. The National Weather Service said North Carolina will receive the equivalent of up to eight months of rain in a two- to three-day period.

MANAFORT REPORTEDLY TAKES DEAL… Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has reportedly agreed to a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller in advance of his upcoming trial. Terms of the deal are expected to be revealed in court today. Details could include whether Manafort has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors or is simply trying to avoid a trial by entering the guilty plea.

FEINSTEIN GIVES FBI INFO ON KAVANAUGH… California Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has given federal investigators information from a confidential source about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The New York Times reported the information involved “possible sexual misconduct between Judge Kavanaugh and a woman when they were both in high school.” Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote is scheduled for next Thursday.

ANDREW CUOMO WINS PRIMARY… New York Governor Andrew Cuomo breezed past actress and activist Cynthia Nixon in the state’s gubernatorial Democratic primary yesterday. Cuomo, an incumbent in his second term, had 65 percent of the vote to Nixon’s 35 percent with 85 percent of the districts reporting. The governor will face GOP Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro in November’s general election.

EXPLOSIONS NEAR BOSTON… At least six people were injured yesterday when an apparent natural gas pipeline rupture caused dozens of explosions in three communities near Boston. Authorities ordered the evacuations of hundreds of residents. Emergency crews fielded at least 70 reports of fires, explosions and investigations of gas odor.

ENTERTAINMENT
JOHN MELLENCAMP TO TOUR… John Mellencamp will hit the road on a new North American tour to support his upcoming 24th studio album, “Other People’s Stuff.” The tour kicks off February 7 in South Bend, Indiana, and wraps up March 30 in Clearwater, Florida. Stops include Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Baltimore, New York, St. Louis, Kansas City and Nashville.

IN THEATERS… “White Boy Rick” tells the story about a teenager who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison. Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt star in the R-rated film. The psychological thriller “Lizzie” is based on the infamous 1892 murders of the Borden family. Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny star in the R-rated film.

COLORADO 10 – Arizona 3… The Rockies used a five-run bottom of the seventh inning to put away the Diamondbacks and remain 1-1/2 games ahead of the second-place Dodgers in the NL West. Arizona fell 4-1/2 games back. Nolan Arenado smacked a solo homer and Trevor Story added a two-run shot. Kyle Freeland (15-7) gave up three runs on four hits over 6-1/3 innings.

L.A. Dodgers 9 – ST. LOUIS 5… Manny Machado went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBIs in leading the Dodgers past the Cardinals. The victory moved L.A. within a game of St. Louis in the race for the NL’s second wild card

Chi. Cubs 4 – WASHINGTON 3 (10 innings)… Javier Baez’s bunt single in the top of the 10th inning scored Kris Bryant with a go-ahead run and the Cubs made it stand in outlasting the Nationals in a makeup game. Baez also doubled home a run and hit a solo homer.

N.Y. METS 4 – Miami 3… Michael Conforto and Todd Frazier hits back-to-back homers after two were out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Mets over the Marlins in the opener of a doubleheader. New York starter Steven Matz hit a game-tying two-run homer in the second.

N.Y. METS 5 – Miami 2… Michael Conforto lined a two-run double and singled home a run to lead the Mets past the Marlins for a sweep of the twinbill. Tomas Nido homered with the bases empty.

AL SCORES
BOSTON 4 – Toronto 3… The Red Sox edged the Blue Jays and lowered their magic number for clinching the AL East title to six. J.D. Martinez’s 41st homer came with the bases empty. Rafael Devers also hit a solo shot.

BALTIMORE 5 – Oakland 3… Dylan Bundy (8-14) allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings and the Orioles dealt the Athletics their first loss in seven games. Tim Beckham got things going with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning.

KANSAS CITY 6 – Minnesota 4… Back-to-back homers by Salvador Perez and Jorge Bonifacio highlighted a four-run bottom of the sixth inning that carried the Royals past the Twins.

Seattle 8 – L.A. ANGELS 2… Mike Leake (10-9) held the Angels to a run on four hits over seven innings and the Mariners cruised to the win. Nelson Cruz belted a three-run homer.
