FILING BY TRUMP’S SISTER LED TO FINANCIAL EXPOSE… The New York Times revealed yesterday that a filing made by Donald Trump’s federal judge sister led to the newspaper’s bombshell story that documented Trump engaging in “dubious” tax schemes and “outright” fraud to increase his inheritance from his parents’ wealth. A disclosure form Maryanne Trump Barry filed as part of her Senate confirmation hearing showed a $1 million contribution from a family-owned company she wasn’t aware of. All County Building Supply & Maintenance was identified as the method her father used to move cash from his companies to his children. According to the Times report, Fred Trump helped his family avoid hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes and Donald received more than $413 million from his parents. President Trump has called the story a hit piece.

FEMA TESTS ALERT SYSTEM… The Federal Emergency Management Agency tested its first Presidential Alert yesterday afternoon by sending alerts to Americans’ cellphones. The test alerts were sent to all cellphones connected to wireless providers participating in the Wireless Emergency Alerts system. The same system also sends out weather and Amber Alerts.

ARREST IN SUSPICIOUS LETTERS… Federal officials yesterday announced the arrest of a Utah man suspected in the mailing of suspicious letters to Pentagon officials and President Donald Trump earlier this week. The letters were initially feared to contain the poison ricin. William Clyde Allen III was arrested in Logan, Utah on a probable cause warrant and charges are expected by the end of the week. A Pentagon spokeswoman said tests showed that the letters actually contained castor seeds, which ricin is derived from, and not the deadly substance itself.

OFFICER DIES IN SOUTH CAROLINA SHOOTINGS… Gunfire that erupted in Florence, South Carolina, yesterday left a police officer dead and six other law-enforcement officers injured. A 20-year-old male civilian was also shot, authorities say, and the suspect has been taken into custody. Police were reportedly serving a search warrant when they were met by heavy gunfire. Of the seven officers injured, four were Florence Police Department officers and three were deputies from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say the suspect barricaded himself in a home that held children, but they were taken to safety. The suspect surrendered after a two-hour standoff.

5 INJURED IN PHILADELPHIA SHOOTINGS… Five 19- to 23-year-old men were wounded in Philadelphia yesterday when a gunman opened fire from a moving vehicle outside a shopping center. One of the victims’ wounds was critical, police said. The other four victims were to be in stable condition. Police are asking for help from the public in identifying the suspects.

MISCHA BARTON JOINS ‘THE HILLS’ REBOOT… MTV has announced that Mischa Barton is joining the cast of “The Hills: New Beginnings.” Barton joins Audrina Patridge in the reboot of the early 2000s reality series. The series is expected to premiere in 2019.

DAMON WAYANS LEAVING ‘LETHAL WEAPON’… Damon Wayans is leaving the Fox series “Lethal Weapon.” The actor says he’ll stick around to finish production on the 13 episodes in season three. The 58-year-old Wayans starred with Clayne Crawford as buddy cops on the series, but the two have clashed famously behind the scenes.

N.Y. YANKEES 7 – Oakland 2… The Yankees cruised past the Athletics in last night’s American League wild-card game. Aaron Judge got things going with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Luke Voit’s two-run triple highlighted a four-run sixth. Giancarlo Stanton capped the scoring with a solo blast. New York visits Boston on Friday in Game 1 of the AL Division Series.

NHL REGULAR SEASON UNDERWAY… The NHL’s regular season got underway last night with eight teams in action…

TORONTO 3 – Montreal 2 (OT)… Auston Matthews’ second goal of the game came 1:01 into overtime and lifted the Maple Leafs over the Canadiens. John Tavares also found the net for Toronto.

WASHINGTON 7 – Boston 0… The defending Stanley Cup-champion Capitals launched their defense by routing the Bruins. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored two goals. Nicklas Backstrom had three assists. Goalie Braden Holtby stopped all 25 shots.

VANCOUVER 5 – Calgary 2… The Canucks scored four third-period goals to put away the Flames. Elias Pettersson had a goal and an assist. Goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 33 shots.

Anaheim 5 – SAN JOSE 2… The Ducks scored four straight goals at the end to erase a 2-1 deficit and top the Sharks. Adam Montour netted a tie-breaking goal with 11:58 remaining in the third period. Rickard Rakell scored a goal and had two assists. Jakob Silfverberg assisted on three goals.
