KAVANAUGH CONFIRMATION… A procedural vote is scheduled for today with a final vote set for tomorrow in the confirmation of federal appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. An FBI report on sexual abuse accusations made against Kavanaugh was made available to Senators yesterday. Democrats called the report incomplete while Republicans claimed it did not support the accusations. Thousands of anti-Kavanaugh protesters rallied outside the Supreme Court and entered a Senate office building to urge a “No” vote. Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested including actress Amy Schumer.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT CHARGES RUSSIAN HACKERS… The Justice Department has filed charges against seven Russian intelligence officers for hacking various organizations to steal sensitive and embarrassing information. Authorities announced yesterday that charges include wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy. Three of the defendants are also charged with hacking U.S. citizens in relation to the 2016 election. The seven suspects are in Russia and cannot be extradited.

WHITE HOUSE APPROVES COUNTERTERRORISM STRATEGY… President Trump has approved a new counterterrorism strategy with a focus on combating terrorism and terrorist ideology. The National Strategy for Counterterrorism is being called the U.S.’ first “robust and fully articulated” strategy on counterterrorism since 2011.” The White House says the plan enhances the emphasis on targeting terrorist networks and denying their ability to mobilize, finance, travel, communicate and inspire new followers. The strategy focuses on pursuing terrorists to their source, isolating terrorists from their sources of support, and modernizing and integrating the U.S.’ counterterrorism tools.

CHINA USED MICROCHIP TO HACK COMPANIES… Bloomberg Business reported yesterday that Chinese spies used a tiny microchip to hack top U.S. companies, including Apple and Amazon. According to the report, attackers were able to use the hardware to create a doorway into any network that included the microchips. Amazon and Apple both disputed parts of the report, but Bloomberg says the denials were contradicted by six current and former senior national-security officials.

CAR BOMBING A MURDER-SUICIDE… Authorities in Pennsylvania say Saturday night’s car explosion in Allentown that killed three people, including a two-year-old boy, was a targeted murder-suicide by a “depressed” father. Authorities said Jacob Schmoyer killed his son, Jonathan, and 66-year-old friend David Halman by detonating a homemade explosive device inside his car. Schmoyer also reportedly sent suicidal letters to family and local police.

ENTERTAINMENT
SUGE KNIGHT SENTENCED TO 28 YEARS IN PRISON… A judge in Los Angeles yesterday sentenced former hip-hop mogul Suge Knight to 28 years in prison for manslaughter. The 53-year-old Knight was originally charged with murder in the death of hip-hop record label owner Terry Carter, who was run over in the parking lot of a hamburger restaurant in Compton, California. Another man who was struck by Knight’s car at the time survived.

IN THEATRES… In “A Star Is Born,” a musician helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the R-rated film. “Venom” tells the story of Eddie Brock, who acquires the powers of a symbiote and must release his alter-ego “Venom” to save his life. The PG-13 film stars Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams.

MILWAUKEE 3 – Colorado 2 (10 innings)… The Brewers recovered to edge the Rockies in Game 1 of the NL Division Series after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth. Mike Moustakas singled home Christian Yelich with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Yelich homered with a runner aboard in the second.

L.A. DODGERS 6 – Atlanta 0… Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched four-hit ball over seven innings and the Dodgers blanked Braves in the NLDS opener. Max Muncy struck the big blow with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second. Joc Pederson homered to lead off the third and Kiké Hernandez added a solo shot in the sixth.

Boston 4 – BUFFALO 0… Jaroslav Halak stopped all 32 shots as the Bruins blanked the Sabres. Brad Marchand assisted on all four goals.

N.Y. Islanders 2 – CAROLINA 1 (OT)… Josh Bailey netted a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime to make a winner out of Barry Trotz in his debut as Islanders coach.

Columbus 3 – DETROIT 2 (OT)… Artemi Panarin’s goal at 2:11 of overtime sent the Blue Jackets past the Red Wings. Panarin also had an assist.

Nashville 3 – N.Y. RANGERS 2… P.K. Subban scored a tie-breaking goal in the third period and the Predators made it stand in edging the Rangers. Goalie Pekka Rinne stopped 34 shots for Nashville.

Chicago 4 – OTTAWA 3 (OT)… Brent Seabrook netted a tying goal in the third period and Patrick Kane added the game-winner 38 seconds into overtime as the Blackhawks outlasted the Senators.

Winnipeg 5 – ST. LOUIS 1… The Jets scored three goals over a 1:44 span of the third period to put away the Blues. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves.

DALLAS 3 – Arizona 0… Ben Bishop stopped all 27 shots at goal and the Stars cruised past the Coyotes. Jamie Benn had two assists.

COLORADO 4 – Minnesota 1… Mikko Rantanen scored a goal and had an assist as the Avalanche skated past the Wild. Goalie Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves.

Philadelphia 5 – VEGAS 2… Wayne Simmonds netted a pair of goals and Jakub Voracek had two assists as the Flyers topped the Golden Knights.
