BUDGET DEFICIT RISES… Data released yesterday by the Treasury Department revealed that the nation’s budget deficit rose to $779 billion in the fiscal year 2018. That marked a 17-percent increase from the previous year’s deficit and reached the highest levels since 2012. Overall government receipts increased $14 billion from the 2017 fiscal year, while outlays rose by $127 billion.

SEARCH FOR THE MISSING CONTINUES IN HURRICANE’S PATH… Authorities in northwest Florida say dozens of people remain missing after Hurricane Michael’s arrival last week. Recovery teams with dogs and heavy equipment continue to search for more victims in Mexico Beach and Panama City. Mexico Beach residents are being allowed to return home today. The storm has been blamed for at least 19 deaths across four states and the death toll is expected to rise.

SEARS FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY… The once-thriving department store chain Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday. The company has suffered from rising online competition from and has been closing stores and selling properties as it tries to rearrange more than $5 billion in debt. Sears was America’s largest retailer until it was overtaken by Walmart in the 1980s.

JUDGE TOSSES OUT STORMY DANIELS DEFAMATION SUIT… A judge yesterday dismissed Stormy Daniels’ defamation lawsuit against President Trump. Judge James Otero also ruled Daniels must pay Trump’s attorney fees. Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti filed suit claiming that a Trump tweet “falsely attack[ed] the veracity” of Daniels’ claim that she was confronted by a man who threatened her not to speak out about her alleged affair with Trump in 2011.” Judge Otero concluded that Daniels did not “sustain a cause of action for defamation” because she did not establish how Trump “knew or did not know about the 2011 threat in the first place.”

PAUL ALLEN DIES… Microsoft co-founder and investor Paul Allen died yesterday of non-Hodgkins’s lymphoma. He was 65 and successfully battled the disease in 2009. Allen announced two weeks ago that it had returned.

ENTERTAINMENT
TARA REID REMOVED FROM FLIGHT… Tara Reid was reportedly pulled off a flight before takeoff yesterday. The 42-year-old actress was aboard a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York when she caused a disturbance. The plane had already pushed back from the gate, but the pilot announced he was turning the plane around.

RAPPER RECOVERING FROM SHOOTING… Rapper Yella Beezy, whose real name is Deandre Conway, remains hospitalized after being shot while driving on a highway in Lewisville, Texas. Police say someone pulled up alongside the rapper on the Sam Rayburn Tollway and opened fire on Sunday morning. Conway was struck three times.

Milwaukee 4 – L.A. DODGERS 0… The Brewers cruised past the Dodgers in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Jhoulys Chacin combined with four relievers on a four-hit shutout. Orlando Arcia homered with a runner aboard. The series remains in L.A. for tonight’s Game 4. Lefthander Rich Hill gets the start for the Dodgers. The Brewers have yet to announce a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 9:09 p.m. Eastern and the game airs on FS1.

TONIGHT’S ALCS SCHEDULE
Boston (Eovaldi) is at Houston (Keuchel) for Game 3 with the series tied 1-1. The game airs on TBS, with first pitch set for 5:09 p.m. Eastern.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
GREEN BAY 33 – San Francisco 30… Mason Crosby booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Packers (3-2-1) over the 49ers (1-5). The winning kick capped an 81-yard drive set up by Kevin King’s interception with 1:07 remaining. Aaron Rodgers passed for 425 yards and found Devante Adams with a pair of touchdown passes. Adams finished with 10 catches for 132 yards.

NHL SCORES
OTTAWA 4 – Dallas 1… The Senators scored three unanswered goals in the third period to put away the Stars. Matt Duchene assisted on two goals. Goalie Craig Anderson stopped 37 shots.

MONTREAL 7 – Detroit 3… Jonathan Drouin found the net twice and the Canadiens got a goal and two assists from Tomas Tatar in blasting the Red Wings.

TORONTO 4 – Los Angeles 1… Kasperi Kapanan netted two goals as the Maples Leafs cruised past the Kings for their fifth straight win. Auston Matthews had two assists.

NASHVILLE 4 – Minnesota 2… The Predators made it five wins in six games by doubling up on the Wild. Ryan Johansen and P.K. Subban each had two assists. Goalie Pekka Rinne made 29 saves.
