U.S. GENERAL SHOT IN AFGHAN ATTACK… Pentagon officials confirmed yesterday that Army Brigadier General Jeffrey Smiley was shot in a Taliban attack that left two Afghan leaders dead in Kandahar province on Thursday. The Washington Post reported that Smiley suffered at least one gunshot wound while he was inside the Kandahar governor’s compound. Two top Afghan provincial officials were killed in the attack. The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, General Scott Miller, escaped injury.

MANHUNT FOR COP-KILLER UNDERWAY IN GEORGIA… A manhunt is underway in Georgia for an 18-year-old man suspected of killing a police officer. Authorities say 30-year-old Gwinnett County officer Antwan Toney was responding to the report of a suspicious vehicle near a middle school when he was killed. A second suspect has been arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault.

FOUR AMERICANS KILLED IN COSTA RICA RAFTING MISHAP… Officials say four Americans were killed in a rafting mishap off the coast of Quepos, Costa Rica, on Saturday. A local tourist remained missing in a swollen river. Crews were able to safely rescue 10 tourists.

SIX INJURED IN JACKSONVILLE SHOOTINGS… Shootings at a laundromat in Jacksonville, Florida, left six adults wounded yesterday. Three of the injuries are critical, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Victims ranged in age from 20 to 70. No suspects have been taken into custody.

30 HOSPITALIZED AFTER FLOOR COLLAPSE… Authorities in South Carolina say about 30 people were hospitalized early yesterday after the floor of a condominium clubhouse near Clemson University collapsed during a large private party. The clubhouse was reportedly rented out for the event. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, officials said.

‘A STAR IS BORN’ TOPS ALBUM CHART… The “A Star Is Born” soundtrack sold 143,000 copies to remain atop the Billboard 200 chart for a second week. Quavo’s Quavo Huncho finished second after selling 99,000 units. Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter V” stayed in third place with 85,000 copies sold. Gunna’s “Drop Harder” held at No. 4 with 71,000 units sold. Ella Mai’s self-titled release sold 69,000 units to finish fifth.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “Halloween” took in $77.5 million to dominate the weekend box office. “A Star is Born” remained in second place with $19.3 million. Last week’s champ, “Venom,” slipped to third place with $18.1 million. “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” stayed at No. 3 with $9.7 million. “First Man” slipped to fifth place with $8.5 million.

L.A. Rams 39 – SAN FRANCISCO 10… Todd Gurley ran for a pair of touchdowns and had a scoring reception as the Rams (7-0) pounded the 49ers (1-6) to remain unbeaten. Jared Goff passed for 2-2 yards and two TDs.

WASHINGTON 20 – Dallas 17… The Redskins (4-2) escaped with a win over the Cowboys (3-4) when Dallas kicker Brett Maher missed a 52-yard field goal as time expired. Washington remains atop the NFC East.

New Orleans 24 – BALTIMORE 23… The Saints (5-1) edged the Ravens (4-3) after Baltimore kicker Justin Kicker missed what would have been a game-tying PAT with 4 seconds left. Drew Brees threw touchdown passes to Michael Thomas and Benjamin Watson.

L.A. CHARGERS 20 – Tennessee 19… The Chargers (5-2) turned away a Titans (3-4) two-point conversion attempt with 31 seconds remaining to emerge victorious in a game played in London. Philip Rivers passed for 350 yards and two touchdowns. Tyrell Williams had four catches for 118 yards and a score.

TAMPA BAY 26 – Cleveland 23 (OT)… Chandler Catanzaro booted a 59-yard field goal with 1:50 remaining in overtime to lift the Buccaneers (3-3) over the Browns (2-4-1). Jameis Winston passed for 362 yards.

Carolina 21 – PHILADELPHIA 17… The Panthers (4-2) scored all 21 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 17-point deficit and down the Eagles (3-4). Cam Newton tossed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with 1:22 left to provide the go-ahead score.

Minnesota 37 – N.Y. JETS 17… Latavius Murray rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Vikings (4-2-1) topped the Jets (3-4). Kirk Cousins threw for 241 yards and two scores. Adam Thielen had nine catches for 110 yards and a TD.

New England 38 – CHICAGO 31… Tom Brady passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns and the Patriots (5-2) held off the Bears (3-3). James White had two scoring receptions.

Detroit 32 – MIAMI 21… Matt Stafford found Michael Roberts with a pair of scoring passes and the Lions (3-3) cruised past the Dolphins (4-3). Kerryon Johnson rushed for 158 yards.

INDIANAPOLIS 37 – Buffalo 5… Andrew Luck passed for four touchdowns in leading the Colts (2-5) past the Bills (2-5). T.Y. Hilton had two scoring catches. Marion Mack rushed for 126 yards and a TD.

Houston 20 – JACKSONVILLE 7… The Texans (4-3) made it four straight wins with their defeat of the Jaguars (3-4). Lamar Miller ran for 100 yards and a score.

KANSAS CITY 45 – Cincinnati 10… Patrick Mahomes completed 28 of 39 passes for 358 yards and four touchdowns as the Chiefs (6-1) walloped the Bengals (4-3). Kadeem Hunt rushed for a score and had two TD catches. Ron Parker returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown.

Atlanta 133 – CLEVELAND 111… Rookie Trae Young poured in 35 points and dished off 11 assists in leading the Hawks past the Cavaliers. Kent Blazemore added 23 points.

Sacramento 131 – OKLAHOMA CITY 120… Ian Shumpert scored 26 points to lead seven players in double figures as the Kings outgunned the Thunder. De’Aaron Fox had 22 points and 10 assists.

Denver 100 – Golden State 98… Juancho Hernangomez’s block of a Damian Jones shot in the final seconds preserved the Nuggets’ win over the Warriors. Gary Harris led Denver with 28 points. Nikola Jokic finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

L.A. CLIPPERS 115 – Houston 112… The Clippers got 23 points from Tobias Harris and 20 from Dino Gallinari in getting past the Rockets. Montrezl Harrel delivered 17 points and 10 boards off the bench.

Calgary 4 – N.Y. RANGERS 1… Garnet Hathaway and Johnny Gaudreau scored two goals apiece as the Flames skated past the Rangers. Goalie David Rittich made 44 saves.

Buffalo 4 – ANAHEIM 2… Four different players found the net as the Sabres rallied past the Ducks after spotting them a two-goal lead.

WORLD SERIES OPENS TOMORROW… The Dodgers and Red Sox will open the World Series tomorrow night in Boston. As of last night, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has yet to decide between Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill as a starter. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is sending lefty Chris Sale to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 8:09 p.m. Eastern and the game airs on Fox.
