The Rundown for Nov. 12, 2018

AMERICA REMEMBERS VETERANS… Major events in New York City and Philadelphia led nationwide efforts to remember America’s veterans yesterday. Roughly 25,000 veterans, active-duty military personnel and members of law enforcement marched in New York City’s annual Veterans Day Parade. In Philadelphia, the National Constitution Center awarded the annual Liberty Medal to President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush for their commitment to veterans. Former Vice President Joe Biden, chairman of the National Constitution Center’s Board of Trustees, presented the awards at the 30th Annual Liberty Medal Ceremony.

LAWSUIT IN GEORGIA GOVERNOR RACE… The Georgia Democratic Party and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams’ campaign filed a lawsuit in federal court yesterday asking for rejected absentee ballots and provisional ballots to be counted in the Georgia governor’s race. The lawsuit challenges the rejection of more than 1,000 absentee ballots for missing information or mismatching information. Additionally, the lawsuit seeks relief for voters whose provisional ballots were rejected in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties, which are in the Atlanta metro area, because they are registered in a different county. Republican candidate Brian Kemp currently leads Abrams by about 59,000 votes with 50.3 percent of the vote but the race automatically goes into a run-off on December 4 if Kemp’s vote drops dips below 50 percent.

MACHINE RECOUNT IN FLORIDA… Florida has ordered a machine recount of votes for state governor and senator. Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner said that a recount was required by law since unofficial results in both races fell within a margin of 0.5 percent. Recounts are expected to take several days, but analysts say possible legal challenges mean it could take weeks for the winners to be confirmed.

SINEMA’S LEAD GROWS IN ARIZONA SENATE RACE… Democrat Kyrsten Sinema’s lead over Republican Martha McSally in Arizona’s Senate race continues to grow. Sinema led by 30,310 votes as of yesterday afternoon, according to the Arizona secretary of state’s office. Arizona is slower than most states in counting votes because about 75 percent of the state’s electorate votes by mail.

31 DEAD IN CALIFORNIA FIRES… The discovery of six more bodies yesterday raised the death toll from California wildfires to 31. More than 200 people remain unaccounted for, authorities say. 29 of the deaths occurred in northern California’s Camp Fire. The Woolsey fire burning near Malibu in Southern California is blamed for at least two deaths.

ENTERTAINMENT
ANDREA BOCELLI TOPS ALBUM CHART… Andrea Bocelli’s “Si” sold 126,000 units to top the Billboard 200 album chart. The “A Star Is Born” soundtrack by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper remained in second place. Joji’s “Ballads 1,” Tory Lanez’s “LoVE me Now?” and Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter V” were also in the top five.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” took in $66 million to debut atop the weekend box office. Last week’s champ, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” slipped to a distant second place with $30.8 million. “Overlord” finished third with $10.1 million. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” took in $9.5 million to finish fourth. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story” came in fifth with $8 million.
