The Rundown for Nov. 30, 2018

TRUMP IN ARGENTINA FOR SUMMIT… President Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the two leaders have joined others at the Group of 20 summit. Just after Trump departed en route to the summit, he announced that he was canceling a scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin later announced, however, that the meeting would take place as scheduled tomorrow. Trump cited Russian ships firing on and seizing three Ukrainian vessels near Crimea in announcing the cancellation. The White House did not immediately confirm the meeting.
COHEN SAYS HE LIED OUT OF LOYALTY IN GUILTY PLEA… After pleading guilty yesterday to making false statements to Congress about President Trump’s real-estate dealings in Moscow, former Trump attorney and fixer Michael Cohen claimed he did so in order to stay “loyal” to his ex-boss. “I made these statements to be consistent with Individual-1’s political messaging and to be loyal to Individual-1,” Cohen said in his courtroom appearance. Cohen admitted to making false statements to the House Intelligence Committee in 2017 about the scope of conversations regarding Trump’s plan to build a new Trump Tower in Moscow.
FORMER TRUMP ATTORNEY RAIDED… Federal agents yesterday raided the offices of Chicago alderman and former attorney to President Trump Edward Burke. FBI agents were later seen carrying away a cardboard file box, a computer and two computer monitors. Burke’s legal practice specializes in property tax assessments and he represented Trump in a challenge against property tax assessments for Trump Tower.
SENATOR TIM SCOTT DOOMS JUDGE’S NOMINATION… Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina effectively ended the nomination of Thomas Farr to be a federal judge by announcing his opposition. Scott, who is African-American, criticized Farr’s record on race issues. Farr, a former lawyer for Jesse Helms, has been accused of crafting voter-suppression measures in North Carolina. Scott joins Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake and all Democrats in opposing Farr, whose nomination was scheduled for a final vote next week.

NO CHARGES AGAINST ARRESTED MIGRANTS… Border Patrol officials announced yesterday that no criminal charges will be filed against the 42 migrants who were arrested by U.S. authorities in last Sunday’s clash at the southern border. 27 men and 15 women and children were arrested during a confrontation that resulted in U.S. authorities firing tear gas at caravan members who sought to apply for asylum in the U.S. The subjects who were arrested may be subject to deportation, officials said.

HUGH JACKMAN TO TOUR… Hugh Jackman will perform songs from “The Greatest Showman,” “Les Miserables” and other Broadway shows as part of a world tour he is preparing.
