GOVERNMENT WORKERS SPEAK OUT AGAINST SHUTDOWN… The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 700,000 federal workers, spoke out against the government shutdown yesterday. They rebuked the president’s claim that “many” of them told him to “stay out until you get the funding for the wall,” according to the New York Daily News. The president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers noted, “We have not heard from a single member who supports the president’s inaction.” The shutdown leaves 420,000 government employees reportedly currently working without pay and 380,000 more who aren’t working at all.

DOW JUMPS… The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 1,000 points yesterday to post the largest single-day gain since 2009. The jump follows the worst Christmas Eve market drop in history. Surges in tech and oil shares contributed to the unexpected upswing. Meanwhile, analysts President Trump’s attacks on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell are attributed to.

TRUMP VISITS TROOPS… President Trump U.S. visited U.S. troops at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany yesterday following his unannounced visit to Al Asad Air Base west of Baghdad. Trump was supposed to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi on the first leg of the trip, but the two wound up only speaking by phone due to a disagreement over how to conduct the meeting. The trip to Iraq marked Trump’s first visit to a combat zone.

JUSTICE GINSBURG RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL… Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been released from a New York hospital after undergoing cancer surgery. The 85-year-old justice underwent surgery on Friday to remove two cancerous nodules in her left lung. Doctors say there was no evidence of any remaining disease after the removal of the two nodules.

MANHUNT IN CALIFORNIA FOR COP KILLER… A manhunt was launched in California yesterday following the fatal shooting of a police officer during a traffic stop in Stanislaus County. The 33-year-old fallen officer was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

KEVIN SPACEY VICTIM REPORTEDLY HAS VIDEO… The boy suing disgraced actor Kevin Spacey for allegedly sexually assaulting him at a bar in Nantucket in 2016 reportedly has video evidence of part of the alleged encounter. MassLive cited Massachusetts State Police in revealing the video’s existence. The 59-year-old Spacey will be arraigned January 7 on a charge of indecent assault and battery. Spacey also remains under investigation for sexual assault in both Los Angeles and England.

MSNBC TOPS CABLE NEWS RATINGS… MSNBC beat Fox News for the first time in 17 years on its way to topping television’s cable news ratings for the week ending December 21. MSNBC averaged 1.558 million total viewers, while Fox averaged 1.541 million and CNN averaged 975,000. It was also the fourth straight week that MSNBC beat Fox News in the 8-11 p.m. primetime hours in both total viewers and the 25-54 news demo. The Rachel Maddow Show was the most-watched cable news program of the week with more than 3.2 million total viewers (compared with about 2.3 million for Sean Hannity).

Phoenix 122 – ORLANDO 120 (OT)… The Suns topped the Magic to continue their turnaround. Devin Booker scored a game-high 35 points. T.J. Warren scored all four of his team’s points in overtime and finished with 24 points.

DETROIT 106 – Washington 95… The Pistons took control with a big third quarter and pulled away from the Wizards. They got 23 points from Blake Griffin and 22 from Langston Galloway. Andre Drummond had 16 points and 11 rebounds in his 10th straight double-double.

BROOKLYN 134 – Charlotte 132 (2OT)… Joe Harris laid in the decisive bucket with 3.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime period as the Nets outlasted the Hornets. Spencer Dinwiddie led all scorers with 37 points and dished off 11 assists. Joe Harris added 27 points. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with 16 points and 15 boards.

Indiana 129 – ATLANTA 121… Thaddeus Young scored 21 points to lead eight players in double figures and the Pacers held off the Hawks. Tyreke Evans and Domantas Sabonis each delivered 19 points off the bench.

Toronto 106 – MIAMI 104… Danny Green’s 3-pointer with 22.7 seconds remaining gave the Raptors the lead for good in their defeat of the Heat. Kawhi Leonard pumped in 30 points.

Minnesota 119 – CHICAGO 94… The Timberwolves built a 23-point halftime lead and coasted past the Bulls. Derrick Rose led the way with 24 points. Karl Anthony-Town powered his way to 20 points and 20 rebounds.

MEMPHIS 95 – Cleveland 87… The Grizzlies jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter and held off the Cavaliers the rest of the way. Marc Gasol scored 20 points to lead a balanced scoring attack.

SAN ANTONIO 111 – Denver 103… DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 30 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 27 points and the Spurs handled the Nuggets. Jakob Poeltl came off the bench to pull down 11 boards.

DALLAS 122 – New Orleans 119… The Mavericks came up bid down the stretch in getting past the Pelicans. Luca Doncic had 21 points and 10 assists. DeAndre Jordan finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

L.A. CLIPPERS 127 – Sacramento 118… Lou Williams came off the bench to score 24 points and lead seven players in double figures while leading the Clippers past the Kings. Montrezi Harrell tossed in 22 points.
