ROSENSTEIN PLANNING TO LEAVE… Justice Department officials say Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is planning to leave his position soon after William Barr is confirmed as attorney general and Special Counsel Robert Mueller submits his report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The confirmation could come as early as next month. Rosenstein has overseen Mueller’s investigation since the recusal of former attorney general Jeff Sessions.

TRUMP WALKS OUT OF MEETING WITH DEMS… President Trump reportedly “walked out” of a meeting with Democrats yesterday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi informed him they would not fund his desired border wall. According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Trump told them, the meeting “was a waste of his time.” Trump later confirmed the walkout in a tweet. Meanwhile, the House yesterday passed legislation to end a partial shutdown of the Treasury Department and some other agencies without giving Trump any money for a border wall. The bill was sent to the Republican-controlled Senate after its passage, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not indicated a willingness to bring it up for a vote.

TRUMP HALTS CALIFORNIA DISASTER RELIEF… President Trump revealed yesterday that he has ordered a halt to federal disaster relief for California’s wildfires unless state officials involved in forest management “get their act together.” The announcement followed new California Governor Gavin Newsom’s claim at his inauguration on Monday that the Trump administration is “hostile to California’s values.” Trump has criticized California for poor forest management despite the fact that more than half of the 33 million acres of forest in the state are under federal management. State and local agencies control only 3 percent.

IOWA’S AG-GAG LAW STRUCK DOWN… A federal judge yesterday struck down an Iowa law that prohibited journalists and activists from going undercover to report on animal-rights abuses. The 2012 law made it illegal to make false statements in order to gain access to a livestock facility. U.S. District Judge James Gritzner wrote in his ruling that the statute violated the First Amendment and could prevent abuses from being uncovered.

AMERICAN DETAINED IN IRAN… Iran has confirmed that 46-year-old U.S. Navy veteran Michael White has been arrested and detained in the country. Family members say White has been missing since July 27, 2018, when he failed to board a flight from Iran to the United Arab Emirates. marking the first detainment of an American under President Trump. White reportedly traveled to Iran to visit his Iranian girlfriend.

ENTERTAINMENT
HULU CANCELS SARAH SILVERMAN’S SHOW… Hulu has canceled Sarah Silverman’s late-night-style series “I Love You, America” after just 21 episodes. The variety-talk series debuted in late 2017 and earned a coveted Emmy nomination last fall in the variety sketch category. The series intended to unite a fractured nation.

KEVIN HART WON’T HOST OSCARS… Kevin Hart vowed yesterday that he definitely won’t host the Oscars ceremony this year. The comedian and actor withdrew from the award ceremony last month after the discovery of homophobic tweets he posted almost a decade ago. There was speculation Hart might return as host following his apology, but he said during an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” yesterday that “I’m not hosting the Oscars this year.” The Oscars are scheduled for February 24 in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel has hosted for the past two years.

NBA SCORES
BOSTON 135 – Indiana 108… The Celtics built a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back in their rout of the Pacers. Marcus Morris led all scorers with 22 points. Jayson Tatum tossed in 20 points.

WASHINGTON 123 – Philadelphia 106… Bradley Beal ran off 14 straight points in the fourth quarter and finished with 34 points in leading the Wizards past the 76ers. Otto Porter Jr. delivered 23 points off the bench.

BROOKLYN 116 – Atlanta 100… The Nets erased an early 19-point deficit on their way past the Hawks. D’Angelo Russell scored 23 points to lead seven players in double figures. Ed Davis came off the bench to grab 16 rebounds.

Milwaukee 116 – HOUSTON 109… The Bucks took control with a big third quarter and hung on to down the Rockets. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 27 points and gathered 21 boards. Malcolm Brogdon added 24 points.

MEMPHIS 96 – San Antonio 86… The Grizzlies held the Spurs to 31 first-half points in coming out ahead in a defensive battle. Marc Gasol had 26 points and 14 rebounds.

NEW ORLEANS 140 – Cleveland 124… The Pelicans rolled past the Cavaliers after trailing by double digits early. Anthony Davis poured in 38 points and brought down 13 boards.

DALLAS 104 – Phoenix 94… All five starters scored in double figures as the Mavericks handled the Suns. Luka Doncic led the way with a game-high 30 points.

UTAH 106 – Orlando 93… The Jazz bombed the Magic 32-12 in the third quarter to erase a 17-point halftime deficit and pulled away for the victory. Donovan Mitchell scored a game-high 33 points. Rudy Gobert had 14 rebounds to go with his 12 points.

PORTLAND 124  – Chicago 112… CJ McCollum scored 24 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and the Trail Blazers breezed past the Bulls. Damian Lillard dished off 10 assists to go with his 16 points.

L.A. LAKERS 113 – Detroit 100… Kyle Kuzma knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 41 points in leading the Lakers past the Pistons. Five other players scored in double figures for L.A.

CALGARY 5 – Colorado 3… Five different players found the net as the Flames topped the Avalanche. Mark Giordano assisted on three goals. T.J. Brodie and Johnny Gaudreau each had two assists.

Ottawa 2 – ANAHEIM 1 (OT) … Colin White’s tip-in at 1:34 of overtime sent the Senators past the Ducks. Bobby Ryan scored a tying goal midway through the third period.
