TRUMP INAUGURAL COMMITTEE SUBPOENAED… The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has subpoenaed Donald Trump’s inaugural committee yesterday. The subpoena seeks “all documents” related to the committee’s donors and vendors, as well as records relating to “benefits” donors received after making contributions, according to the Wall Street Journal. Additionally, the subpoena requests documents relating to donations “made by or on behalf of foreign nationals, including but not limited to any communications regarding or relating to the possibility of donations by foreign nationals.” Federal investigators have also been investigating potential violations of federal corruption laws and whether the inauguration misspent the $107 million it raised to stage events.

TRUMP NOMINATES BERNHARDT AS INTERIOR SECRETARY… President Trump has nominated former oil lobbyist David Bernhardt as secretary of the Interior. Bernhardt has held the job on an interim basis since the ouster of scandal-plagued Ryan Zinke in January. Bernhardt’s lobbying efforts are expected to prompt conflict of interest concerns.

REPORT WARNS OF U.S. PULLOUT IN SYRIA… A report released yesterday by the Department of Defense’s inspector general warns that “Battle-hardened” Islamic State militants could retake key territory in Syria following the pullout of U.S. troops. The report was based on information provided by the Department of Defense, officials said. President Trump ordered the withdrawal on December 19. He said at the time that the Islamic State has been “defeated.” The pronouncement angered a number of military officials and led to the resignation of former Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

U.S. SENDING MORE TROOPS TO BORDER… The Pentagon announced yesterday that the U.S. is sending an additional 2,000 troops to the southern border with Mexico. The deployment will raise the number of American troops stationed on the southern border to about 4,300. The soldiers will reportedly border-patrol agents, carry out surveillance work and install miles of razor wire.

DELIBERATIONS UNDERWAY IN ‘EL CHAPO’ TRIAL… Deliberations are underway in the trial of accused drug cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The 11-week trial in Brooklyn federal court featured testimony from more than 50 witnesses and centered on the inner workings of the Sinaloa Cartel. The 61-year-old Guzman twice escaped from prison in Mexico and is facing a life sentence in a U.S. prison if convicted. Prosecutors accuse him of trafficking tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine into the U.S. over more than two decades.

21 SAVAGE TO FIGHT IMMIGRATION CLAIM… Rapper 21 Savage plans to battle it out in court with U.S. immigration officials who claim he is in the country illegally. The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested on Sunday and accused of overstaying his visa and being a convicted felon. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Abraham-Joseph came to the U.S. from the UK at age 12 in July 2005 and stayed beyond the expiration of his visa a year later. Abraham-Joseph’s lawyer said yesterday that the rapper never tried to conceal his nationality and applied for a visa in 2017.

BACKSTREET BOYS TOPS ALBUM CHART… Backstreet Boys’ new release, “DNA,” sold 234,000 copies to put the band atop the Billboard 200 album chart for the first time since December 2000. Future’s “Future Hndrxx Presents: The WIZRD” slipped into a distant second place after selling 56,000 units. A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s “Hoodie SZN” remained in third place after selling 47,000 units. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” finished fourth with 40,000 copies sold. Weezer’s new “Teal Album” capped the top five with 39,000 units sold.

Atlanta 137 – WASHINGTON 129… The Hawks jumped out to a 35-20 lead after the first quarter and held off the Wizards. Taurean Prince knocked down five of his team’s 20 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Eight other players scored in double figures for Atlanta.

DETROIT 129 – Denver 103… Andre Drummond had game-highs with 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Pistons dealt the Nuggets their first loss in seven games. Stanley Johnson delivered 21 points off the bench.

Milwaukee 113 – BROOKLYN 94… Giannis Antetokounmpo pumped in 30 points and collected 15 boards as the Bucks cruised past the Nets. Defensively, Milwaukee held Brooklyn to 32 percent shooting.

Indiana 109 – NEW ORLEANS 107… The Pacers Withstood a late rally to get past the Pelicans. Darren Collison scored 22 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Domantas Sabonis came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 13 rebounds.

Houston 118 – PHOENIX 110… James Harden poured in 44 points as the Rockets fought off the Suns. Kenneth Faried finished with 17 points and 14 boards.

SACRAMENTO 127 – San Antonio 112… The Kings built an early double-digit lead and then pulled away in the second half to down the Spurs. Rookie Marvin Bagley III led the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox added 20 points.

PHILADELPHIA 2 – Vancouver 1… The Flyers got goals from Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek in downing the Canucks for their eighth straight win. Goalie Carter Hart made 41 saves.

TORONTO 6 – Anaheim 1… Andreas Johnsson scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Maple Leafs skated past the Ducks. Jake Muzzin added a goal and two assists.

DALLAS 5 – Arizona 4… Tyler Seguin netted a tie-breaking goal with 7:32 remaining and the Stars made it stand in edging the Coyotes. Jamie Benn had two assists.
