The Rundown for Feb. 21, 2019

CNN: MUELLER REPORT COULD COME SOON… CNN reported yesterday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s long-awaited Russia report could be delivered to Attorney General William Barr as early as next week. The report, if completed, would cap a nearly two-year-long investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Lawmakers are hopeful that Barr will share the information with the public as he pledged to do during his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this year.

SUPREME COURT RULES AGAINST CIVIL FORFEITURE… The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the federal prohibition against excessive fines applies on a state level. The High Court voted unanimously in dealing a blow to aggressive civil forfeiture tactics. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote that “The Eighth Amendment’s Excessive Fines Clause is an incorporated protection applicable to the States under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.”

MICHAEL COHEN DELAYS IMPRISONMENT… President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen has been granted a 60-day reprieve before reporting to prison. He will go behind bars in May rather than March. Cohen asked for the delay because he “recently underwent a serious medical procedure and needs to undergo intensive post-surgical therapy and be monitored by his physician for recovery,” according to a letter from his attorney. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison last year for crimes that included lying to Congress and making illegal hush-money payments.

AGENTS CONFISCATE $12.7M IN METH… Customs and Border Protection agents in Texas reported yesterday that they confiscated $12.7 million worth of methamphetamine at the Pharr International Bridge to Mexico over the weekend. Agents found the drugs Saturday in a commercial tractor-trailer carrying frozen strawberries. A 42-year-old Mexican national was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security.

COAST GUARD OFFICER ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC TERRORISM PLOT… Federal prosecutors in Maryland say a neo-Nazi serving as a lieutenant in the Coast Guard plotted to attack prominent Democrats and media personalities. Christopher Hasson intended “to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country,” according to investigators. Law enforcement officers seized 15 guns and 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Hasson’s home in Silver Spring, Maryland, last week after he was arrested on drugs and weapons charges. Prosecutors characterize Hasson as a “domestic terrorist” who should be detained. He was arrested last week on drugs and weapons charges.

SMOLLETT CHARGED WITH FILING FALSE REPORT… Police in Chicago say actor Jussie Smollett has been charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false report claiming two men attacked him last month. The class 4 felony carries a sentence of up to three years. Smollett, who appears in the Fox drama “Empire,” claimed on January 29 that he had been the victim of a hate crime.

DIANE LANE, KEVIN COSTNER LAND STARRING ROLES… Diane Lane and Kevin Costner have signed on to star in the suspense thriller “Let Him Go.” They will play a married couple on a mission to rescue their grandson from a dangerous family living off the grid in the Dakotas.
