LAWMAKERS INTRODUCE VICTIMS COMPENSATION BILL… Lawmakers yesterday introduced bipartisan legislation that fully compensates first responders and survivors experiencing illnesses related to the 9/11 terror attacks. The “Never Forget the Heroes: Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act” is a response to the reduction of victims’ payments by 50 percent on claims already filed and 70 percent on those filed going forward after a surge of claims in the past year. The victims compensation fund, which has paid out $5 billion on about 21,000 claims, has been extended through December 18, 2020.

HOUSE TO PASS RESOLUTION TO CANCEL TRUMP’S EMERGENCY… House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced yesterday that the House will pass a resolution to cancel President Trump’s emergency declaration to secure funds for a border wall. At a press conference yesterday, Pelosi called on the Senate to pass the resolution also to “defend our democracy.” After passing in the House today, the bill is expected to face a challenge in the Republican-controlled Senate.

FORMER TRUMP CAMPAIGN STAFFER FILES SUIT… Former Trump presidential campaign staffer Alva Johnson has filed a lawsuit accusing Trump of kissing her without her consent ahead of a rally in Florida. Johnson told the Washington Post that Trump grabbed her hand and leaned in to kiss her on the lips, but she managed to dodge him. In her lawsuit, Johnson also alleges that the campaign discriminated against Johnson by paying her less than her white male counterparts.

U.S. CITIZEN RELEASED FROM CAPTIVITY IN YEMEN… A U.S. citizen has been reunited with his family after 18 months in captivity in Yemen. Oil engineer Danny Burch spent years working in Yemen before he was taken hostage in September 2017. President Trump praised the United Arab Emirates for its role in “bringing Danny home.”

FLORIDA FILES PROSTITUTION CHARGES AFTER BUST… Prosecutors in Florida yesterday filed formal charges against billionaire Robert Kraft and about two dozen other men for soliciting prostitution at massage parlors. The 77-year-old Kraft, who owns the NFL’s New England Patriots, was among those named as a client of a day spa in Jupiter, Florida that had been under investigation by law enforcement officers in three Florida counties. Defendants were charged with first-degree misdemeanors.

R. KELLY RELEASED FROM JAIL… Singer R. Kelly was released from a Chicago jail last night after posting $100,000 bail. Before his release, Kelly’s attorney entered a not-guilty plea to all 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse. The R&B singer is accused of sexually abusing four women, including three who were underage.

ACADEMY AWARDS RATINGS RISE… Sunday night’s Academy Awards attracted an audience that was 12 percent higher than last year, according to the Nielsen Co. The broadcast averaged 29.6 million viewers despite the lack of a show host. Analysts say the popularity of films up for awards helped boost the ratings.

Golden State 121 – CHARLOTTE 110… All five starters scored in double figures as the Warriors handled the Hornets. Klay Thompson led the way with 26 points. DeMarcus Cousins powered his way to 24 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Durant added 20 points.

Portland 123 – CLEVELAND 110… The Trail Blazers jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead and held off the Cavaliers. CJ McCollum led all scorers with 35 points. Damian Lillard tossed in 21 points.

DETROIT 113 – Indiana 109… The Pistons made it seven wins in eight games by downing the Pacers. Andre Drummond finished with 36 points and 16 boards. Blake Griffin had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

BROOKLYN 101 – San Antonio 85… The Nets held the Spurs to 38 first-half points in riding their defense to a victory. D’Angelo Russell led a balanced scoring attack with 23 points.

Phoenix 124 – MIAMI 121… The Suns overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to upend the Heat and end their franchise-record 17-game losing streak. Devin Booker scored 20 points to lead seven players in double figures.

Milwaukee 117 – CHICAGO 106… The Bucks topped the Bulls despite playing without the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo. Khris Middleton and Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points apiece.

HOUSTON 119 – Atlanta 111… The Rockets fought their way past Hawks despite James Harden’s 32-game streak with at least 30 points coming to an end. Harden managed a team-high 28 points. Chris Paul added 20 points. Rookie Trae Young’s 36 points weren’t enough for Atlanta.

MEMPHIS 110 – L.A. Lakers 105… Mike Conley knocked down clutch free throws down the stretch and finished with 30 points in leading the Grizzlies past the Lakers. Jonas Valanciunas had 30 points and 13 rebounds.

MINNESOTA 112 – Sacramento 105… The Timberwolves shook off a slow start to get past the Kings. Karl-Anthony Towns had game-highs with 34 points and 21 boards. Derrick Rose delivered 20 points off the bench.

Philadelphia 111 – NEW ORLEANS 110… Tobias Harris scored 29 points and brought down 10 rebounds as the 76ers escaped with a win over the Pelicans. Ben Simmons had 14 points and 12 boards.

L.A. CLIPPERS 121 – Dallas 112… Montrezl Harrell pumped in a game-high 32 points to lead the Clippers past the Mavericks. Lou Williams scored 21 points and dished off 10 assists. Dino Gallinari added 20 points.

TORONTO 5 – Buffalo 3… The Maple Leafs scored four second-period goals on their way past the Sabres. Austin Matthews goal made him the first Toronto player to score 30 or more goals in the first three seasons of his career. Frederik Gauthier and Kasperi Kapanen each had a goal and an assist.

NEW JERSEY 2 – Montreal 1… The Devils got goals from Nathan Bastian and Kurtis Gabriel in edging the Canadiens. Bastian’s goal was the first of his career. Goalie Corey Schneider made 34 saves.

TAMPA BAY 4 – Los Angeles 3 (SO)… The Lightning recovered to outlast the Kings after blowing a two-goal third-period lead. Victor Hedman netted the winning goal in the shootout. Steven Stamkos set up two goals in regulation and scored in the tie-breaker. The victory was Tampa Bay’s ninth straight. L.A. has lost eight in a row.

NASHVILLE 3 – Edmonton 2 (SO)… Brian Boyle scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Predators over the Oilers. P.K. Subban had a goal and an assist.

Florida 4 – COLORADO 3 (OT)… Aaron Ekblad found the net 26 seconds into overtime to send the Panthers past the Avalanche. Mike Hoffman set up Evgenii Dadonov’s second-period goal and scored a tying goal with 8:03 left in regulation.

VANCOUVER 4 – Anaheim 0… Jacob Markstrom stopped all 29 shots as the Canucks blanked the Ducks. Bo Horvat netted a pair of goals. Elias Pettersson had two assists.
