The Rundown for April 10, 2019

BARR NON-COMMITTAL AT HOUSE PANEL HEARING… Attorney General William Barr appeared before the House Appropriations Committee yesterday and refused to say whether he briefed the White House on special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Barr said he would be in position to release the special counsel’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election within the week but that portions of it would be redacted in order to protect ongoing investigations and the privacy and reputation of individuals who have not been charged. The attorney general also said he had no plans to release a full, unredacted report to Congress, despite bipartisan demands.

MNUCHIN TALKS TAX RETURNS… Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin revealed yesterday that White House lawyers communicated with the Treasury Department about how to handle House Democrats’ request for President Trump’s tax returns even before they made it. However, Mnuchin denied that he was briefed on the full extent of the conversations. Last week, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, a Democrat from Massachusetts, invoked a law that gives Congress to obtain the returns of any taxpayer directly from the Internal Revenue Service. Neal gave the IRS a deadline of today to respond to the committee’s request. IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig later appeared before the same House subcommittee and said no one at the IRS has discussed presidential tax return disclosures with the White House.

24 CHARGED IN $1.2B HEALTHCARE SCHEME… The Justice Department announced yesterday that 24 people have been charged in a $1.2 billion healthcare fraud scheme that targeted the elderly and disabled. Prosecutors say the scheme involved durable medical equipment companies paying “illegal kickbacks and bribes” in exchange for beneficiary referrals from medical professionals working with fraudulent telemedicine companies to fraudulently bill Medicare. The fraudulent telemedicine companies allegedly lured hundreds of thousands of elderly and disabled patients for back, shoulder and knee braces that were not medically necessary. Charges resulted from an investigation that involved more than 80 search warrants across 17 federal districts.

NEW YORK ISSUES ORDER IN RESPONSE TO MEASLES OUTBREAK… New York City has declared a public health emergency in response to a measles outbreak centered in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg community and Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered mandatory vaccinations in the neighborhood. Officials blamed the outbreak on “anti-vaxxers” spreading false information. The order requires all unvaccinated people at risk of exposure to the virus to get the vaccine, including children over 6 months old.

ARRESTS SWELL AT BORDER… More than 103,000 people along the border with Mexico were arrested or denied entry to the U.S. last month, according to data released yesterday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The number represented a 35 percent increase over the prior month and more than twice as many as the same period last year. Children and people traveling as families made up 67 percent of those arrested between official ports of entry.

ENTERTAINMENT
LORI LOUGHLIN FACES NEW CHARGE… Federal prosecutors announced yesterday that actress Lori Loughlin could receive up to 20 years in prison after facing a new money laundering charge for her role in a college admissions scandal. Loughlin and 15 other parents were named yesterday in a new superseding indictment also charging them with conspiracy to commit fraud. Loughlin was already out on $1 million bail on conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud. Loughlin’s husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, faces the same charges. The two are accused of paying $500,000 to help their two daughters gain acceptance to the University of Southern California through its rowing team despite neither girl participating in the sport.
