The Rundown for April 22, 2019

DEMOCRATS TALK IMPEACHMENT… A move toward the impeachment of President Trump appears to be gaining momentum among Democratic leaders. The heads of three House investigatory committees said during televised appearances yesterday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report raises the possibility. House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler were in agreement that it appears Trump has committed impeachable offenses. On Friday, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren became the first major Democratic 2020 presidential candidate to call for impeachment proceedings.

CITIZENSHIP QUESTION GOES TO SUPREME COURT TOMORROW… The fight over the Trump administration’s efforts to add a question on citizenship to the 2020 census will be taken up tomorrow by the Supreme Court. The Commerce Department contends that it has the authority to collect data on citizenship and that the question is needed to help with the Justice Department’s enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Opponents of the question argue that it would deter undocumented immigrants from filling out the survey and lead to an inaccurate count of the American population.

BORDER VIGILANTE IN COURT TODAY… The New Mexico man arrested for detaining migrants near the U.S.-Mexico border reportedly faced similar charges 13 years ago in Oregon. 69-year-old Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of firearms, was accused of impersonating a police officer in Oregon’s Klamath County in 2006 and claimed to be a fugitive bounty hunter, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. Hopkins is scheduled to make his initial appearance today in a Las Cruces federal court.

STOP & SHOP WORKERS CONTINUE STRIKE… Stop & Shop announced last night that it has reached tentative agreements with three unions whose members have been on strike since April 11. Nearly 31,000 Stop & Shop employees at 240 Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connection have walked off the job in a dispute over proposed changes to health care benefits and employee pay. Union officials argued that the supermarket chain’s parent company profited more than $2 billion last year and bought back $4 billion in stock over the past three years.

STUDENTS HOSPITALIZED AFTER FLIGHT… American Airlines officials say 13 students were hospitalized after becoming ill on a flight from Miami to Boston yesterday morning. Multiple EMS crews in Boston responded to Logan Airport and transported the passengers to a hospital with symptoms described as “minor in nature.” The students complained of stomach virus symptoms but no one outside their group reported any illness.
