The Rundown for May 15, 2019

HOUSE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING TRUMP LAWYERS… The New York Times reported yesterday that the House Intelligence Committee is investigating whether lawyers representing the Trump family obstructed the panel’s inquiry into Russian election interference by shaping false testimony. The investigation stems from the testimony of President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael D. Cohen, who told the panel that the four lawyers targeted in the investigation shaped false claims Cohen made before Congress about a Trump Tower project in Moscow. Cohen also said the lawyers presented a potential pardon to secure his loyalty. Letters from committee chairman Adam Schiff revealed that in recent weeks, the committee sent lengthy document requests to President Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow; Donald Trump Jr. lawyer Alan S. Futerfas; Trump Organization lawyer Alan Garten; and Ivanka Trump’s lawyer Abbe D. Lowell.

POMPEO SAYS U.S. DOESN’T WANT WAR… Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insisted yesterday that the U.S. does not seek a war with Iran. Pompeo, who is visiting in Russia, says the U.S. would engage militarily only if the country’s interests were attacked. The U.S. has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, B-52 bombers and other military personnel and equipment to the Persian Gulf to counter unspecified threats they claim Iran poses.

TRUMP JR. TO COMPLY WITH SUBPOENA… Donald Trump Jr. will comply with a subpoena as part of a deal he reached with the Senate Intelligence Committee. Trump Jr. threatened to defy the subpoena, raising the possibility that he would be held in contempt of Congress. The president’s son has agreed to a two- to four-hour interview some time in mid-June and questions will be limited to five or six topics pertaining to his communications with Russian officials. Terms also dictate this will be the last time Trump Jr. has to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

RUSSIAN HACKERS BREACHED FLORIDA VOTER DATABASES… Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said yesterday that Russian hackers breached voter databases in two of the state’s counties before the 2016 presidential election. DeSantis insisted “there was no manipulation” in the hackers’ “intrusions.” DeSantis made the announcement after a meeting with the FBI. The governor said a non-disclosure agreement he signed prevents him from identifying which counties were hacked.

ALABAMA SENATE PASSES ABORTION BILL… The Alabama Senate last night passed a bill that outlaws almost all abortions in the state. The 25-6 vote came after hours of debate. If signed by Governor Kay Ivey, the bill would criminalize abortion throughout all stages of pregnancy and make it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion. The only exception on the ban would be if a mother’s life is in danger. An amendment to include exceptions for victims of rape or incest failed.
