TRUMP TO DECIDE ON CHINESE TARIFFS AFTER MEETING… Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC yesterday that President Trump will decide whether to add tariffs on China after meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping later this month in Japan. Mnuchin said Trump will base his decision on whether Xi heads “in the right direction” on a deal to reshape the trade and commercial relationships between the two countries. When the two presidents met last December in Buenos Aires, they agreed to suspend planned increases in tariffs while both sides continued negotiating efforts.

AMERICAN EXTENDS 737 GROUNDING… American Airlines announced yesterday that it will keep its fleet of Boeing 737 Max jets grounded through Labor Day. The airline had previously said it was grounded the aircraft through August 19. American Airlines released over the weekend claiming it “remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing in co-ordination with our union partners, will lead to re-certification of the aircraft soon.”

MAN AT CENTER OF PRIDE PARADE SCARE ARRESTED… Police in Washington, D.C., announced yesterday that they have arrested a man for waving a handgun during Saturday’s Capital Pride Parade. There is no evidence that shots were fired, but the incident sparked a stampede that left several people in the hospital. Authorities say the unidentified man is facing a gun possession charge.

EMBASSIES DEFY ORDER NOT TO RAISE RAINBOW FLAGS… The Washington Post reported yesterday that several U.S. embassies have been displaying rainbow flags in defiance of Trump administration policy. One U.S. diplomat called the flying of the flags “a category one insurrection.” Embassies had been raising flags to mark Pride month for years before a new policy required diplomats to get top-level State Department permission first. Embassy officials say all requests have been denied. Rainbow banners were reportedly raised at embassies in Seoul and Chennai, India. The symbol was displayed differently by other diplomats.

GAS PRICES DROP… The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline in the U.S. has dropped 9 cents per gallon over the past three weeks, according to a nationwide survey of gas stations released yesterday. The average per-gallon price is now $2.84, according to the Lundberg Survey. The San Francisco Bay Area had the most expensive gas at $3.94 a gallon. The cheapest gas was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where a gallon cost an average of $2.27. Meanwhile, the average price of diesel has dropped 4 cents a gallon since May 17 to $3.12.

CHRIS PRATT-KATHERINE SCHWARZENEGGER WED… Actor Chris Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger Saturday near Santa Barbara, California. The 39-year-old Pratt was married to actress Anna Faris until they divorced last year. His 29-year-old bride is the daughter and eldest child of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “The Secret Life of Pets 2” took in $47.1 million to debut atop the weekend box office. Another newcomer, “Dark Phoenix,” finished in second place with $33 million. “Aladdin” made $24.5 million to finish third. Last week’s champ, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” dropped to fourth place with $15.5 million. “Rocketman” capped the top five with $14 million.

Boston 5 – ST. LOUIS 1
… The Bruins scored four third-period goals to put away the Blues to force Wednesday’s Game 7 in Boston. Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak each had a goal and an assist. Goalie Tuukka Rask made 29 saves.

Cincinnati 4 – PHILADELPHIA 3… Joey Votto stroked a game-tying two-run single and Eugenio Suarez singled home the go-ahead run during a three-run top of the seventh inning that carried the Reds past the Phillies.

N.Y. METS 6 – Colorado 1… Todd Frazier homered and knocked in four runs in leading the Mets past the Rockies. Noah Syndergaard (4-4) pitched one-hit ball over seven scoreless innings.

Atlanta 7 – MIAMI 6 (12 innings)… Matt Joyce singled home a go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning and the Braves made it stand in outlasting the Marlins in a wild one. Ronald Acuna Jr. belted a three-run homer to cap a four-run ninth for the Braves. Both teams scored single runs in the 10th.

MILWAUKEE 5 – Pittsburgh 2… The Brewers put away the Pirates after spotting them a two-run lead and completed a three-game sweep. Christian Yelich smacked a solo homer and Mike Moustakas added a two-run shot.

L.A. Dodgers 1 – SAN FRANCISCO 0… Walker Buehler (7-1) held the Giants to five hits over seven innings and got help from two relievers on the shutout. Max Muncy’s first-inning homer provided the game’s only offense.

Washington 5 – SAN DIEGO 2… Howie Kendrick, Trea Turner, Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon drilled consecutive homers on seven pitches in the seventh inning to power the Nationals past the Padres. Stephen Strasburg (7-3) gave up a run on six hits over seven innings.

CHI. CUBS 5 – St. Louis 1… Kyle Hendricks (7-4) limited the Cardinals to a run on eight hits over seven innings. Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Cubs. Kyle Schwarber singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

Tampa Bay 6 – BOSTON 1… The Rays got a pair of solo homers from Brandon Lowe in cruising past the Red Sox. Guillermo Heredia and Yandy Diaz also homered with the bases empty. Blake Snell (4-5) allowed a run on five hits over six innings.

Minnesota 12 – DETROIT 2… Nelson Cruz homered or the fourth straight game in the Twins’ pounding of the Tigers. Miguel Sanó, Byron Buxton and Eddie Rosario also circled the bases. Jake Odorizzi (9-2) gave up a run on five hits over six innings.

N.Y. Yankees 7 – CLEVELAND 6 (10 innings)… The Yankees recovered to outlast the Indians after blowing a 5-0 sixth-inning lead. Aaron Hicks doubled home Cameron Maybin with a tie-breaking run in the top of the 10th inning. Brett Gardner opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second.

HOUSTON 4 – Baltimore 0… Wade Miley (6-3) scattered six hits over six innings and three relievers preserved the Astros’ shutout of the Orioles. Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer in this major-league debut.

Chi. White Sox 5 – KANSAS CITY 2… Eloy Jimenez had a couple of hits, including a solo homer, as the White Sox downed the Royals. Tim Anderson and Charlie Tilson also had two hits and an RBI.

Oakland 9 – TEXAS 8… The Athletics built an 8-0 lead and held on to edge the Rangers. Khris Davis homered and singled home a run. Matt Olson connected for a two-run homer.

Seattle 9 – L.A. ANGELS 3… Edwin Encarnacion and Tom Murphy each homered twice to lead the Mariners past the Angels. Daniel Vogelbach and Kyle Seager also went deep.

Arizona 8 – TORONTO 2… Carson Kelly and Ketel Marte homered as the Diamondbacks scored all eight runs in the top of the third inning and coasted past the Blue Jays. Robbie Ray (5-3) allowed two runs on five hits over 6-2/3 innings.
