SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS DOUBLE-JEOPARDY CASE… The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday reaffirmed a 170-year-old exception to the Constitution’s double-jeopardy clause. The ruling has attracted considerable attention due to its potential effect on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. It would allow state prosecutors to prosecute Trump campaign officials whether or not federal officials have.

VIRGINIA CAN USE NEW DISTRICT MAPS, SUPREME COURT RULES… The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a lower court ruling that Virginia’s new district maps must be used ahead of statewide elections later this year. In the 5-4 ruling, the justices found that the state’s House of Delegates didn’t have the standing to appeal the lower court’s ruling. Democrats successfully argued that previous districts were racially gerrymandered.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CUTS OFF CENTRAL AMERICAN AID… The Trump’s administration has cut hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras in response to the influx of migrants from the three countries at the U.S. border with Mexico. The plan is expected to face stiff opposition in Congress as lawmakers from both parties consider it cruel. Opponents also say the move would be counterproductive because it’s likely to increase the number of migrants.

McCONNELL TO FORCE VOTE ON BORDER FUNDING… Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell vowed yesterday to force a vote on President Trump’s $4.5 million request for emergency funding at the border. He says the vote will reveal where lawmakers stand on the issue. If approved, the request would fund humanitarian aid to increase shelters and care for unaccompanied minors, expand the number of detention beds and provide more investigative resources. Republicans will need at least seven Democrats to support the request for passage in the full Senate.

GUNMAN FATALLY SHOT AT DALLAS FEDERAL BUILDING… A masked gunman was fatally shot yesterday in an exchange of gunfire with federal officers at a federal courthouse in downtown Dallas. The shooter, identified as a 22-year-old man, was subdued after opening fire outside the Earle Cabell Federal Building. Investigators are trying to determine the motive.

MEGADETH CANCELS SHOWS… The heavy metal band Megadeth has announced that it is canceling the majority of its summer tour following lead singer Dave Mustaine’s throat-cancer diagnosis. The 57-year-old Mustaine will be undergoing treatment. The band has been working on a new album.

THOM YORKE TO TOUR… Thom Yorke is planning “a new series of live electronic performances” with collaborators Nigel Godrich and Tarik Barri under the name Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. The tour will reportedly feature new music, according to a press release. The North American leg of the tour is scheduled for fall.

ATLANTA 12 – N.Y. Mets 3… Ozzie Albies had three hits, including a solo homer, and knocked in four runs to lead the Braves in their romp over the Mets. Brian McCann went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer. Ronald Acuña Jr. smacked a solo homer.

ST. LOUIS 5 – Miami 0… Miles Mikolas (5-7) scattered six hits over six innings and three relievers completed the Cardinals’ shutout of the Marlins. Dexter Fowler belted a three-run homer and Matt Carpenter added a solo shot.

SAN DIEGO 2 – Milwaukee 0… Joey Lucchesi (6-4) surrendered just three hits over seven innings and two relievers did the rest in the Padres’ blanking of the Brewers. Manny Machado homered with the bases empty.

San Francisco 3  – L.A. DODGERS 2… Brandon Crawford lined a two-run double for the Giants. Tyler Austin scored the decisive run in the sixth on Stephen Vogt’s grounder.

Philadelphia – WASHINGTON (ppd)… Rain in the nation’s capital forced postponement of last night’s Phillies-Nationals game. It will be made up on Wednesday.

N.Y. YANKEES 3 – Tampa Bay 0… Masahiro Tanaka (5-5) blanked the Rays on two hits and struck out 10. DJ LeMahieu homered with a runner aboard and Cameron Maybin added a solo shot for the Yankees.

L.A. Angels 10 – TORONTO 5… Mike Trout went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBIs for the Angels. Shohei Ohtani connected or a three-run blast. Justin Upton and Kole Calhoun added solo shots.

TEXAS 7 – Cleveland 2… Danny Santana homered with a runner aboard for the Rangers. Elvis Andrus lined a two-run double. Lance Lynn (8-4) gave up a run on six his over seven innings.

Boston 2 – MINNESOTA 0… Rick Porcello (5-6) pitched four-hit ball over seven innings and got help from two relievers on the shutout. J.D. Martinez singled home the only run Boston needed in the top of the first inning. Xander Bogaerts added an RBI double in the ninth.

OAKLAND 3 – Baltimore 2… Mike Fiers (7-3) limited the Orioles to two unearned runs on three hits over 6-2/3 innings. The Athletics scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the third inning on a throwing error by Baltimore catcher Chance Sisco.

Kansas City 6 – SEATTLE 4… Jorge Soler drilled a go-ahead two-run homer in the top o the eighth inning and Martin Maldonado added a solo blast in the ninth as the Royals rallied past the Mariners.

INTERLEAGUE SCORE
CINCINNATI 3 – Houston 2… Nick Senzel singled home two runs and scored on Eugenio Suarez’s single as the Reds scored all three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held off the Astros. Luis Castillo (7-1) allowed two runs on two hits over six innings.
