SHANAHAN WITHDRAWS AS DEFENSE SECRETARY NOMINEE… Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan withdrew his nomination yesterday amid a USA Today report that he and his wife were arrested following a domestic-violence incident in 2010. President Trump has named Secretary of the Army Mark Esper as Shanahan’s replacement. Shanahan told the Washington Post that alleged domestic-violence incidents involving his wife and his son were a “tragedy.”

TRUMP CRITICIZED OVER IMMIGRANT CLAIM… President Trump’s claim that Immigration and Customs Enforcement will begin removing “millions” of undocumented immigrants next week drew criticism from current and former ICE officials yesterday. Trump tweeted on Monday night that the immigrants “will be removed as fast as they come in.” ICE officials say it was wrong of Trump to mention a long-planned operation and note that the announcement was self-defeating and could put agents at risk.

MASSIVE DRUG BUST IN PHILADELPHIA… Federal officials announced yesterday that they seized 33,000 pounds of cocaine Monday night at a Philadelphia shipping terminal. The seizure is one of the biggest in U.S. history, as the drugs had a street value of as much as $750 million. The cocaine was found in seven containers aboard a cargo ship that had previously traveled from Chile, Panama and the Bahamas.

ARREST IN MURDER OF FORMER ARKANSAS STATE SENATOR… Authorities in Arkansas have arrested a woman in the murder of former state senator Linda Collins-Smith. The suspect was identified as a former campaign aide and “good friend” to the deceased lawmaker. Charges against Rebecca O’Donnell include capital murder, abuse of a corpse and hindering physical evidence. O’Donnell is scheduled to enter a plea on July 30.

FATHER OF VICTIM WINS SANDY HOOK LAWSUIT… The father of a Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre victim has won a defamation lawsuit against the authors of a book that denies the shooting ever happened. As part of a settlement, the book “Nobody Died at Sandy Hook” has also been taken off bookstore shelves. The suit was filed by Lenny Pozner, whose 6-year-old son Noah was killed in the shooting. A trial to decide damages has been set for October.

ROY ORBISON-BUDDY HOLLY HOLOGRAM TOUR… The North American itinerary is set for a hologram tour featuring Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. The “Rock ‘N’ Roll Dream Tour” kicks off in San Francisco on September 19 and wraps November 20th in Toronto. The concerts consist of a live band, backing singers and remastered audio of the musicians’ greatest hits.

SCREENWRITER MAX LANDIS ACCUSED OF ABUSE… Eight women have accused screenwriter Max Landis of sexual and emotional abuse. The accusers claim Landis is manipulative and exploitive of their relationships and vulnerabilities. In social-media posts she made last week, Landis’ ex-girlfriend Whitney Moore detailed his alleged abusive behavior.

N.Y. Mets 10 – ATLANTA 2… Pete Alonso went 4-for-4 with a run-scoring double and two-run homer in leading the Mets in their romp over the Braves. Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil added solo homers. Jacob deGrom (4-6) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out 10 over 8-1/3 innings.

Miami 6 – ST. LOUIS 0… Jordan Yamamoto (2-0) pitched two-hit ball over seven innings and ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings at the start of his career. Starlin Castro homered to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Brian Anderson added a two-run blast in the fifth.

Colorado 8 – ARIZONA 1… Nolan Arenado homered with a runner aboard and doubled home a run for the Rockies. Ryan McMahon lined a two-run double. Antonio Senzatela (6-5) surrendered a run on seven hits over 6-2/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO 4 – Milwaukee 1… Francisco Mejia drilled a two-run homer for the Padres. Logan Allen (1-0) blanked the Brewers on three hits over seven innings in his major league debut.

L.A DODGERS 9 – San Francisco 0… Clayton Kershaw (7-1) allowed just three hits over seven innings and got help from two relievers in the shutout of the Giants. Joc Pederson provided all the offense the Dodgers needed with a first-inning solo homer. Enrique Hernandez unloaded a grand slam during a six-run seventh.

Philadelphia – WASHINGTON (ppd)… Rain in the nation’s capital force postponement of last night’s Phillies-Nationals game. It will be made up on September 24.

L.A. Angels 3 – TORONTO 1… Angel starter Tyler Skaggs (6-6) held the Blue Jays to a run on three hits over 7-1/3 innings. Kole Calhoun and Brian Goodwin smacked solo homers in the top of the fifth inning.

N.Y. YANKEES 6 – Tampa Bay 3… Cameron Maybin and Edwin Encarnacion homered for the Yankees. Gary Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly and singled home a run.

Cleveland 10 – TEXAS 3… Jose Ramirez belted a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. Jake Bauers, Roberto Perez and Tyler Naquin added solo blasts in the seventh. Zach Plesac (2-2) limited the Rangers to a run on two hits over seven innings.

OAKLAND 16 – Baltimore 2… The Athletics erupted to score 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow away the Orioles. Khris Davis and Stephen Piscotty hit three-run homers. Ramon Laureano and Robbie Grossman added two-run blasts. Brett Anderson (7-4) gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings. One of the runs was unearned.

Boston 4 – MINNESOTA 3  (17 innings)… Max Kepler singled home Luis Arraez with the winning run in the bottom of the 17th inning as the Twins outlasted the Red Sox. Kepler also hit a game-tying solo homer in the 13th and tied the game with an RBI single in the eighth.

Kansas City 9 – SEATTLE 0… Whit Merrifield went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and six RBIs in leading was the Royals walloped the Mariners. Jorge Soler also went deep. Homer Bailey (6-6) threw five-hit ball over 7-2/3 innings. Two relievers nailed down the shutout.

Detroit 5 – PITTSBURGH 4… Nicholas Castellanos scored a tie-breaking run on Brandon Dixon’s grounder in the bottom of the eighth inning. Castellanos doubled home a run and scored on Miguel Cabrera’s single in the third.

CINCINNATI 4 – Houston 3… Jesse Winker homered with the bases empty and Derek Dietrich added a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning for the Reds. Kyle Farmer’s homer in the seventh proved to be the difference.

Chi. White Sox 3 – CHI. CUBS 1… Eloy Jimenez connected for a tie-breaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to power the White Sox past the Cubs.
