TRUMP VOWS TO SANCTION IRAN TODAY… President Trump vowed on Saturday that the U.S. will impose “major additional sanctions” against Iran today. In making the announcement, Trump also said he has not ruled out strikes against Iran in the future. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran was reportedly on the agenda during the president’s stay at Camp David over the weekend.
OREGON GOP SENATORS CONTINUE WALKOUT… Eleven Republican Oregon state senators continue to elude authorities after fleeing the state capitol as part of an effort to deny passage of a climate-change proposal. The senators want the plan that would drastically lower greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to be voted on rather than enacted by lawmakers. They walked out after negotiations with Democrats collapsed. The walkout eliminates a 20-senator quorum in the Senate and prevents legislation from being passed in a legislative session that ends next Sunday.
FORMER PENNSYLVANIA CONGRESSMAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT… Former Pennsylvania U.S. congressman Joe Sestak yesterday became the 24th candidate to seek the Democratic presidential nomination. Sestak cited his “commitment to service” in announcing his candidacy yesterday. The 67-year-old Sestak, a former 3-star admiral in the U.S. Navy, represented Pennsylvania’s 7th congressional district in the U.S. House from 2007 to 2011.
STORMS ON FORECAST FOR CENTRAL U.S... Forecasters say the threat of violent thunderstorms continues across the nation’s midsection today. The prediction follows hundreds of reports of wind damage and hail storms throughout the Central U.S. on Saturday. St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas and Little Rock, Arkansas, are expected to bear the brunt of the storms.
GAS PRICES DROP 11 CENTS… The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline has dropped 11 cents per gallon over the past two weeks and is now at $2.74, according to a survey of gas stations nationwide released yesterday. The Lundberg Survey found that the cheapest gas was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where it cost $2.17 a gallon. The San Francisco Bay Area had the most expensive gas at $3.78 a gallon.
MADONNA TOPS ALBUM CHART… Madonna’s new release, “Madame X,” sold 95,000 copies to give the singer her ninth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album chart. Bruce Springsteen recorded his 20th top 10 release as his “Western Stars” debuted in second place with 66,000 units sold. Billie Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” slipped to third place after selling 58,000 copies. Last week’s champ, the Jonas Brothers’ “Happiness Begins” dropped to fourth place on sales of 52,000 units. Bastille’s “Doom Days” capped the top five with 41,000 copies sold.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “Toy Story 4” took in $118 million to open atop the weekend box office. Another newcomer, “Child’s Play,” finished in a distant second place with $14 million. “Aladdin” took in $12.2 million to remain in third place. “Men in Black International” fell from first to fourth with $10.7 million. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” made $10.2 million to finish fifth.
Miami 6 – PHILADELPHIA 4… J.T. Riddle homered with a runner aboard and the Marlins got solo blasts from Garret Anderson and Brian Anderson in completing a sweep of the Phillies. Starlin Castro had three hits and an RBI.
Atlanta 4 – WASHINGTON 3 (10 innings)… Johan Camargo belted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning and the Braves hung on to edge the Nationals. Josh Donaldson and Ronald Acuna also homered for Atlanta.
MILWAUKEE 7 – Cincinnati 5… Travis Shaw’s leadoff homer sparked a five-run bottom of the third inning that carried the Brewers past the Reds. Orlando Arcia added a solo shot in the fifth.
CHI. CUBS 5 – N.Y. Mets 3… Javier Baez’s three-run run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning powered the Cubs past the Mets.
PITTSBURGH 11 – San Diego 10 (11 innings)… The Pirates erased three-run deficits in the ninth and 11th innings to outlast the Padres. Kevin Newman drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Jacob Stallings with the winning run after Jacob Stallings delivered a game-tying pinch-hit two-run single.
ARIZONA 3 – San Francisco 2 (10 innings)… Tim Locastro singled home Nick Ahmed with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Locastro and Christian Walker also produced run-scoring singles for the Diamondbacks.
L.A. DODGERS 6 – Colorado 3… Pinch-hitter Will Smith celebrated his recall by blasting a two-out walkoff three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to send the Dodgers past the Rockies. Chris Taylor put L.A. on the board with a pinch-hit three-run shot in the seventh.
Toronto 6 – BOSTON 1… Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman (5-9) scattered five hits over six scoreless innings. Eric Sogard homered with the bases empty. Danny Jansen stroked a two-run single.
CLEVELAND 8 – Detroit 3… The Indians came up with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and coasted past the Tigers. Carlos Santana smacked a solo homer. Jason Kipnis had a couple of hits and knocked in two runs. Zach Plesac (3-2) allowed a run on five hits over seven innings.
Houston 9 – N.Y. YANKEES 4… Tyler White unloaded a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning to highlight the Astros’ romp over the Yankees. Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel added solo homers.
KANSAS CITY 6 – Minnesota 1… Hunter Dozier’s three-run homer capped a five-run bottom of the fifth inning for the Royals. Homer Bailey (7-6) gave up a run on five hits over 5-1/3 innings.
TEXAS 7 – Chi. White Sox 4… Danny Santana homered with a runner aboard and Tim Federowicz added a solo shot for the Rangers. Delino DeShields Jr. went 3-for-3 and knocked in two runs.
Tampa Bay 8 – OAKLAND 2… Travis d’Arnaud connected for a two-run homer and singled home a run for the Rays. Austin Meadows stroked a bases-clearing double.
SEATTLE 13 – Baltimore 3… J.P. Crawford’s two-run single capped an eight-run bottom of the third inning and the Mariners cruised past the Orioles. Crawford was 4-for-4 with four RBIs on the day. Mac Williams homered with a runner aboard and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
