DEMS DEBATE… The first Democratic debate heading into the 2020 presidential election is in the books. Ten of the party’s candidates gathered in Miami last night for the event hosted by NBC News. Key differences emerged between the candidates, who discussed such topics as health care, climate change, immigration, foreign policy and LGBTQ issues. Candidates identified China, Russia and Trump as the greatest threats to the U.S.

SENATE PASSES BORDER BILL… The Republican-led Senate set up a showdown with House Democrats yesterday by passing a $4.6 billion bill to address the problem of asylum-seeking immigrants at the southern border with Mexico. The legislation passed in the Senate by an 84-8 vote after a separate bill was passed in the House. Leaders from both chambers say they’ll refuse to take up the other’s bill, leaving reconciliation in doubt.

KELLYANNE CONWAY SUBPOENAED… The House oversight and reform committee has authorized a subpoena for White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, accusing her of violating the Hatch Act on multiple occasions. Conway refused to appear and testify about the alleged violations. She has allegedly campaigned for and against candidates while employed in the White House, which is prohibited under the Hatch Act.

NSA COLLECTED AMERICANS’ RECORDS… Documents released yesterday revealed that the National Security Agency improperly collected phone call records of Americans last fall. The collection came just months after a previous breach prompted the agency to destroy millions of records from the controversial program. The ACLU successfully obtained the redacted documents after filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

U.S. ABANDONS MIDDLE EAST WORKSHOP… Heavy criticism by Palestinian officials forced the U.S. to shutter the Middle East economic workshop in Bahrain it was heading. Palestinians complained that the outline to raise trade and investment ignored their demand for statehood. The two-day workshop was led by President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

ENTERTAINMENT
JUDGE RULES AGAINST CUBA GOODING JR. IN GROPING CASE… A judge in New York yesterday refused to throw out Cuba Gooding Jr.’s groping case. The 51-year-old Gooding had sought a dismissal of the misdemeanor case until August 14 so that he could continue working. Gooding is accused of squeezing the breast of a 29-year-old woman without her consent at a bar on June 9.

R. KELLY’S ATTORNEYS GIVEN ALLEGEDLY INCRIMINATING TAPE… Prosecutors in Chicago have given attorneys representing R. Kelly a tape they say shows the singer having sex with a minor girl two decades ago. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges involving four women, three of whom were minors. Cook County Judge Lawrence Flood said he hopes that at least one of the four cases will go to trial early next year.

ARIZONA 8 – L.A. Dodgers 2… Eduardo Escobar blasted a three-run homer during a four-run bottom of the first inning and the Diamondbacks cruised past the Dodgers. Ildemaro Vargas lined a two-run double. Taylor Clarke (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings.

Colorado 6 – SAN FRANCISCO 3… David Dahl’s grand slam in the top of the third inning gave the Rockies the lead for good in their defeat of the Giants. Dahl also singled home a run.

PHILADELPHIA 5 – N.Y. Mets 4 (10 innings)… The Phillies erased a 4-0 deficit to outlast the Mets. Jay Bruce doubled home Roman Quinn with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Jean Segura drilled a solo homer in the sixth and stroked a game-tying two-run single in the seventh.

Washington 7 – MIAMI 5… Matt Adams belted a three-run homer during a four-run top of the sixth inning. Anthony Rendon singled home a run and lifted a sacrifice fly.

Atlanta 5 – CHI. CUBS 3… The Braves got a solo homer from Brian McCann and a three-run shot from Nick Markakis in downing the Cubs. Dallas Keuchel (1-1) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5-2/3 innings.

AL SCORES
Chi. White Sox 8 – BOSTON 7… Jose Abreu doubled home a run, singled in another and blasted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lead the White Sox past the Red Sox. James McCann also homered for Chicago.

N.Y. YANKEES 8 – Toronto 7… The Yankees rallied past the Blue Jays after spotting them a 5-0 lead. Gleyber Torres singled home Didi Gregorius with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Gregorius smacked a solo homer. DJ LeMahieu belted a two-run shot.

CLEVELAND 5 – Kansas City 3… Jake Bauers and Tyler Naquin hit solo homers in the bottom of the fourth inning. Francisco Lindor went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Indians. Trevor Bauer (6-6) allowed a run on three hits and struck out 12 in 6-2/3 innings.

Texas 4 – DETROIT 1… Willie Calhoun, Jeff Mathis and Danny Santana hit solo homers in the top of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie as the Rangers topped the Tigers. Mike Minor (8-4) allowed a run on five hits in the complete-game victory.

MINNESOTA 6 – Tampa Bay 4… Nelson Cruz’s bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the Twins past the Rays. Eddie Rosario went 2-for-2 with an RBI before leaving the game with a sprained ankle.

INTERLEAGUE SCORES
San Diego 10 – BALTIMORE 5… Franmil Reyes homered twice and knocked in three runs as the Padres doubled up on the Orioles. Greg Garcia and Eric Hosmer also went deep.

Oakland 2 – ST. LOUIS 0… Daniel Mengden (2-1) limited the Cardinals to four hits over six innings and three pitchers completed the shutout. Beau Taylor and Matt Chapman homered for the Athletics.

L.A. ANGELS 5 – Cincinnati 1… Justin Bour homered twice and drove in four runs to power the Angels past the Reds. David Fletcher singled home a tie-breaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Seattle 4 – MILWAUKEE 2… J.P. Crawford drove in three runs with a single, double and a triple for the Mariners. Mallex Smith had a couple of hits and scored twice.

Pittsburgh 14 – HOUSTON 2… The Pirates pounded the Astros with a 15-hit attack. Jose Osuna had a couple of hits, including a three-run homer. Josh Bell, Jung Ho Kang and Kevin Newman hit two-run homers. Corey Dickerson went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Dario Agrazal (1-0) surrendered a run on five hits over six innings.
