The Rundown for July 4, 2019

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!… Americans are celebrating the Fourth of July with nationwide celebrations today. They will honor the 243rd anniversary of the Continental Congress adopting the Declaration of Independence with parades, barbecues and fireworks. Major events are planned for Washington, D.C., New York and Boston, among other cities.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT WANTS TO RENEW CENSUS QUESTION… A Justice Department lawyer indicated yesterday that the Trump administration will continue trying to add the citizenship question to the 2020 Census. The announcement comes a week after the Supreme Court halted the plan to include the question on a survey sent to every U.S. household because it lacked justification. According to the Washington Post, Justice Department lawyers are seeking a rationale for adding the question. On Tuesday, administration officials said printing of the 2020 Census was moving forward without the citizenship question.

JUDGE BLOCKS OHIO ABORTION LAW… A federal judge yesterday blocked Ohio from enforcing a new law that would have banned most abortions in the state. U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett in Cincinnati issued a preliminary injunction against enforcing the “Heartbeat Protection Act,” which would have outlawed abortion as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. Judge Barrett ruled that the law imposed an unconstitutional “undue burden” on a woman’s right to obtain a pre-viability abortion.

PEDIATRICIAN REPORTS CHILDREN LIVING IN SQUALOR… A pediatrician who visited a Border Patrol warehouse in McAllen, Texas, told The Atlantic that she saw sick, traumatized children living in squalor and going without sufficient care. Dolly Lucio Sevier said 38 of the children told her they were not permitted to wash their hands or brush their teeth while they were detained. She also said about two-thirds of the children she saw had signs of respiratory infection, and others had symptoms of “sleep deprivation, dehydration, and malnutrition.”

JUDGE DENIES EL CHAPO’S REQUEST FOR A NEW TRIAL… A federal judge in Brooklyn has denied Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s request for a new trial and an evidentiary hearing based on alleged juror misconduct. Court documents indicate U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan’s denials came despite a news report that jurors followed the 11-week trial in the media in violation of a judge’s orders. Cogan said there “is no indication that this news coverage was prejudicial to defendant in any way.” The 61-year-old Guzman was convicted in February of leading “the largest drug-trafficking organization in the world” after six days of deliberation.

BURNED WHISKEY… A fire that broke out Tuesday night at a Jim Beam facility in Kentucky consumed two barrel houses and destroyed some 45,000 barrels of bourbon. No injuries were reported in the blaze, which continued into yesterday at the plant in Versailles. Investigators say the fire started in a building where bourbon is stored as it ages.

ENTERTAINMENT
HALLE BAILEY JOINS ‘THE LITTLE MERMAID’… R&B singer Halle Bailey has signed on to play Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic “The Little Mermaid.” Bailey will be joining a cast that already includes actors Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay. Melissa McCarthy is also reportedly in talks to play the film’s iconic villain Ursula. The new film will include songs from the 1989 original animated film along with new ones.

COMEDIAN ARTE JOHNSON DIES… Comedian Arte Johnson, who won an Emmy Award in 1969 for his work in the 1960s NBC comedy series “Laugh-In,” died of a heart attack yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 90.
