AMERICANS CELEBRATE THE FOURTH… Americans celebrated Independence Day yesterday with parades, concerts, barbecues and fireworks. Some of the biggest celebrations were in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New York. At the annual Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest on Coney Island, New York, Joey Chestnut ate 71 wieners and buns to secure his 12th title.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HIT BY EARTHQUAKES… Southern California was rattled by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks yesterday morning. The quake was the largest to hit the region in 25 years and was centered in a remote area about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. According to San Bernardino Country Fire, there no injuries reported but “buildings and roads have sustained varying degrees of damage.”

JUSTIN AMASH LEAVES GOP… Michigan Congressman Justin Amash, who has publicly advocated for President Trump’s impeachment, announced that he has left the Republican party. In a Washington Post op-ed published yesterday, Amash said American politics is trapped in a “partisan death spiral” and warned: “If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it.” Amash quoted extensively from George Washington’s farewell address which warned against the dangers of partisanship.

BOURBON STILL BURNING… Authorities say it could take another day at least to extinguish the Kentucky fire that destroyed a massive Jim Beam warehouse filled with aging bourbon. Ethanol fumes continued to burn yesterday and officials believe letting the fumes burn would minimize environmental impact. The fire started Tuesday night in a warehouse that stored about 45,000 barrels of bourbon.

MAD MAGAZINE BEING PULLED FROM NEWSSTANDS… MAD magazine executives have confirmed that they will be pulling the satirical publication from newsstands this fall. Readers will still be able to find the magazines in comic shops and through mail subscriptions but they will feature only previously published material. The magazine debuted in 1952 and promptly became a pop cultural icon for generations of Americans.

A$AP ROCKY HELD IN SWEDEN… Swedish prosecutors want to hold A$AP Rocky and his entourage for two weeks while they investigate an alleged assault in Stockholm on Tuesday. Two videos captured A$AP and the group he was with in an altercation with an alleged victim. Witnesses have told police that the victim had been harassing A$AP, but the video has yet to convince them. A$AP is facing up to six years in jail if convicted.

IN THEATERS… In “Spider-Man: Far from Home,” Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever. Tom Holland and Samuel L. Jackson star in the PG-13 film. “Phil” tells the story about a depressed dentist in mid-life crisis who wonders why one of his happiest patients suddenly commits suicide and ends up in a dark, comedic adventure. The R-rated comedy stars Greg Kinnear and Eoin Bates.

WASHINGTON 5 – Miami 2… The Nationals cruised past the Marlins after spotting them an early two-run lead. Anthony Rendon homered and singled home a run. Gerardo Parra stroked a two-run double. Kurt Suzuki homered with the bases empty. Anibal Sanchez (5-6) gave up two runs on five hits over six innings. One of the runs was unearned.

CINCINNATI 1 – Milwaukee 0… Luis Castillo (8-3) limited the Brewers to one hit over 7-2/3 innings and got help from two relievers in the shutout. Yasiel Puig singled home Jesse Winker with the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning.

Chi. Cubs 11 – PITTSBURGH 3… Willson Contreras had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs for the Cubs. Kris Bryant went 4-for-5 with a solo homer. Albert Almora and Robel Garcia also went deep.

ATLANTA 12 – Philadelphia 6… Danby Swanson went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and five RBIs to lead the Braves in their romp over the Phillies. Ozzie Albies connected for a three-run homer. Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson hit solo blasts.

L.A. DODGERS 5 – San Diego 1… Solo homers by Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger helped the Dodgers run their home winning streak to nine games and win their 60th of the season. Hyun-Jin Ryu (10-2) pitched three-hit ball over six scoreless innings.

Detroit 11 – CHI. WHITE SOX 6… Niko Goodrum went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer as the Tigers pounded the White Sox. Miguel Cabrera and Jeimer Candelario smacked solo homers. Nicholas Castellanos and John Hicks added two RBIs apiece.

Cleveland 8 – KANSAS CITY 4… Jose Ramirez’s second solo homer of the day capped a six-run top of the seventh inning that carried the Indians past the Royals. Francisco Lindor knocked in four runs with a pair of singles.

OAKLAND 7 – Minnesota 2… Marcus Semien homered to lead of the bottom of the fifth inning and unloaded a grand slam in the eighth as the Athletics put away the Twins. Chris Herrmann went 4-for-4 with an RBI single.

N.Y. Yankees 8 – TAMPA BAY 4 (10 innings)… The Yankees recovered to down the Rays after blowing a two-run ninth-inning lead. DJ LeMahieu came through with a tie-breaking two-run single in the top of the 10th inning and Gary Sanchez followed with a three-run homer. Edwin Encarnacion homered to lead off the seventh.

Boston 8 – TORONTO 7… The Red Sox erased a 6-1 deficit to upend the Blue Jays. Marco Hernandez slugged a tie-breaking solo homer in the top of the ninth inning. Michael Chavis’ three-run homer capped a six-run sixth. Rafael Devers homered with the bases empty in the first.

TEXAS 9 – L.A. Angels 3… Rougned Odor homered twice and knocked in five runs for the Rangers. Nomar Mozara went 4-for-5 with a two-run double. Lance Lynn (11-4) gave up two runs on nine hits over seven innings.

INTERLEAGUE SCORE
St. Louis 5 – SEATTLE 4… Tommy Edman singled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Cardinals over the Mariners. Dexter Fowler homered with a runner aboard.
