FED LOWERS RATES… The Federal Reserve yesterday reduced interest rates for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. Central bank directors voted to decrease the interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point in response to slowing global growth. Federal Chairman Jerome Powell said the decision was made in light of “implications of global developments for the economic outlook,” along with “muted inflation pressures.”

BIN LADEN’S SON BELIEVED DEAD… U.S. intelligence officials say Hamza bin Laden, the son and believed successor of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is dead. Officials did not provide details about how he died nor did they clarify whether the U.S. was involved in his death. ENTERTAINMENT
WOODSTOCK 50 OFFICIALLY CANCELED… Organizers made it official yesterday when they pulled the plug on the Woodstock 50 music festival. They made the move just a couple weeks in advance of the troubled event. The three-day festival was originally scheduled for Watkins Glen International in upstate New York, but the venue backed out due to money issues. The event was then moved to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, where it was to be a free show.

JUDGE ISSUES PROTECTIVE ORDER IN R. KELLY CASE… A federal judge in Chicago is prohibiting attorneys from disclosing new evidence in R. Kelly’s child pornography case. In issuing the protective order, Judge Harry Leinenweber says he wants to ensure the celebrity case is tried in court, not in the media. Kelly’s attorneys complained that the order would unfairly muzzle them. The 52-year-old Kelly is facing charges of child pornography and coercing minors to engage in sex. The R&B singer has denied any wrongdoing.
