TRUMP ANNOUNCES TARIFFS… President Trump announced yesterday that he plans to impose a new 10 percent penalty on $300 billion worth of imports from China beginning September 1. The tariffs could increase the cost of a significant amount of consumer products in the second half of the year. The announcement prompted stocks to slump and bond prices to spike.

WASHINGTON POST: U.S. TO PULL TROOPS OUT OF AFGHANISTAN… The Washington Post reported yesterday that the U.S. is preparing to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan as part of an initial agreement with the Taliban. According to the report, the Taliban would have to start negotiating a peace deal directly with the Afghan government, renounce al-Qaeda and agree to a cease-fire as part of a deal that could reduce the 14,000 U.S. troops on the ground to between 8,000 and 9,000. The Taliban has refused to speak with the Afghan government until the government comes to agreement with the U.S. about its military presence in the country.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT WON’T PROSECUTE COMEY… The Justice Department has reportedly declined to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey for prosecution over the leaking of some of his memos to the media. The memos, which Comey asked a friend to leak to The New York Times after President Trump fired him, detailed conversations Comey had with the president related to the FBI’s probe of the president and Russian election interference. The Justice Department’s inspector general had been probing the classification status of information in Comey’s memos.

CONSPIRACY THEORISTS POSE DOMESTIC-TERRORISM THREAT… The FBI released a bulletin expressing its belief that conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate pose a domestic-terrorism threat. The report posted at the end of May cites fringe conspiracy theories as being potentially harmful and having the potential to expand in the 2020 election cycle. The FBI warned that spreading conspiracy theories leads to criminal or violent acts.

CONGRESSMAN WILL HURD WON’T SEEK RE-ELECTION… Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd announce last night that he will not seek re-election next year. Hurd, the House’s sole black Republican, said he wanted to “pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.” The former CIA agent has been a critic of President Trump. He called Trump’s tweets attacking four congresswomen of color “racist and xenophobic.” Hurd becomes the sixth Republican in less than two weeks to announce plans to leave Congress.

A$AP ROCKY PLEADS NOT GUILTY… A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, pleaded not guilty to assault charges in a Swedish court yesterday. The rapper testified that he did his best to avoid a fight with two men who were following his entourage. Prosecutors alleged he assaulted a 19-year-old man in Stockholm.

IN THEATERS… In “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity. Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba star in the PG-13 film. “Luce” tells the story about a married couple who learn the truth about their adopted son from a devoted high school teacher. Naomi Watts and Tim Roth star in the R-rated drama.

PHILADELPHIA 10 – San Francisco 2… Cesar Hernandez homered and doubled home two runs for the Phillies. J.T. Realmuto had three hits, including a three-run homer. Scott Kingery went 3-for-4 with a two-run single.

ST. LOUIS 8 – Chi. Cubs 0… Jack Flaherty limited the Cubs to one hit over seven innings and two relievers did the rest in the shutout of the Cubs. Matt Wieters blasted a three-run homer. Yairo Muñoz went 2-for-3 and drove home two runs.

ATLANTA 4 – Cincinnati 1… The Braves topped the Reds in a game called after the sixth inning due to rain in Atlanta. Freddie Freeman belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Duvall went deep in the sixth. Max Fried (12-4) surrendered a run on four hits in going the distance.

L.A. DODGERS 8 – San Diego 2… Will Smith unloaded a grand slam and Matt Beaty doubled home a run during a five-run bottom of the sixth inning that gave the Dodgers the lead for good in their win over the Padres. Cody Bellinger added a two-run double. Clayton Kershaw (10-2) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings.

Houston 7 – CLEVELAND 1… Alex Bregman went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and run-scoring single as the Astros cruised past the Indians. George Springer homered to lead off the game. Michael Brantley stroked a run-scoring double and lifted a sacrifice fly. Gerrit Cole (13-5) allowed a run on four hits over seven innings.

Toronto 11 – BALTIMORE 2… Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Blue Jays in their romp over the Orioles. Randal Grichuk, Danny Jansen and Billy McKinney also went deep. Trent Thornton (4-7) gave up a run on five hits over six innings.

Tampa Bay 9 – BOSTON 4… Mike Zunino and Austin Meadows smacked solo homers for the Rays. Tommy Pham produced a pair of RBI doubles.

MIAMI 5 – Minnesota 4 (12 innings)… Harold Ramirez led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a walkoff homer to complete the Marlins’ come-from-behind win over the Twins. Neil Walker’s game-tying two-run single capped a three-run ninth.

N.Y. Mets 4 – CHI. WHITE SOX 0… Zack Wheeler (8-6) pitched four-hit ball over seven innings and two relievers completed the Mets’ blanking of the White Sox. Robinson Cano provided all the offense New York needed with a homer and RBI double.

OAKLAND 5 – Milwaukee 3… The Athletics erased a 3-1 seventh inning deficit on their way past the Brewers. Matt Chapman hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chad Pinder also went deep for Oakland.
