The Rundown for August 9, 2019

MAGUIRE NAMED DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE… Sue Gordon, the principal deputy director of national intelligence, announced yesterday that she is stepping down after being passed over as director of national intelligence. Less than an hour after President Trump confirmed that she would depart on August 15, the president named National Counterterrorism Center Director Joseph Maguire as acting director of national intelligence. Maguire takes over for the retiring Dan Coats, who had recommended that Gordon replace him.

ANDREW McCABE SUES OVER FIRING… Former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe is taking the Justice Department and FBI to court over his firing last spring. McCabe says the firing was politically motivated retribution for his “refusal to pledge partisan allegiance” to President Trump. His departure came after a Justice Department’s inspector general report concluded he improperly disclosed information to the media and lacked candor in interviews with federal investigators. McCabe was sacked just hours before he became eligible for retirement and he wants a federal court in Washington to reinstate him as deputy director of the FBI so he can earn a full pension.

ICE RELEASES AT LEAST 300 ARRESTED IN RAIDS… U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has released at least 300 of the 680 people who were arrested during raids of Mississippi poultry factories earlier this week. ICE officials announced 30 people were released for “humanitarian factors” at the plants they were arrested in. Some 270 others were released with assigned court dates in federal immigration courts. More than 600 federal agents participated in the raids.

BACKGROUND CHECKS AN ISSUE BETWEEN TRUMP, NRA… White House officials said yesterday that the National Rifle Association is leading the effort to convince President Trump not to support new legislation on background checks for gun buyers. Trump has reportedly been discussing the issue with NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre since declaring his support for background checks. LaPierre said in a statement that “the NRA opposes any legislation that unfairly infringes upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.” Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected a plea from 214 mayors to call back the Senate early and consider new gun legislation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer requested a vote on House-approved legislation that expanded background checks for guns sales before the Senate’s summer recess was over.

FEWER MIGRANTS ALONG BORDER… A government report released yesterday says agents along the southern border are seeing fewer migrants. Authorities credit increased collaboration with Mexico and Guatemala for the number of encounters dropping below 100,000 in July for the first time in five months. The 82,049 people encountered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection was also down 43 percent from May.
