The Rundown for August 27, 2019

DEUTSCHE BANK, CAPITAL ONE MUST TALK TRUMP TAXES TODAY… A Deutsche Bank and Capital One are facing 4 p.m. deadline today to tell a New York appellate court if they possess President Trump’s tax returns. As part of a court order issued yesterday, if the two fail to do so, they must explain why “in detail.” Over the past week, lawyers for both financial institutions have cited “contractual and statutory obligations” in refusing to discuss Trump’s taxes. The case is being tried in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after Trump appealed a lower court’s decision allowing Congress to subpoena Trump’s financial records.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON FOUND CULPABLE IN OKLAHOMA OPIOID EPIDEMIC… A landmark court case concluded yesterday with an Oklahoma judge ruling that Johnson & Johnson had intentionally pushed the benefits of opioids and downplayed their dangers. The judge ordered the company to pay the state $572 million in the first trial of a drug manufacturer for the destruction wrought by prescription painkillers. Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter called Johnson & Johnson the “kingpin” of the state’s opioid epidemic, noting that it owns two companies that grew, processed, and supplied 60 percent of the painkillers’ ingredients. More than 40 other states have similar suits pending against the pharmaceutical industry.

IMMIGRANTS LOSE PROTECTIONS… Officials confirmed yesterday that the Trump administration has removed protection for immigrants who stay in the U.S. and avoid deportation while they or their relatives receive life-saving medical treatments or endure other hardship. The revelation sparked outrage among critics who found it to be continued cruel treatment of immigrants. “This is a new low,” responded Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey. “Donald Trump is literally deporting kids with cancer.” The policy change took effect on August 7.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SUED OVER MIGRANT CHILDREN POLICY… Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have joined in suing the Trump administration over its plan to withdraw from a 1997 court settlement that governs the care of migrant children in federal detention. The Flores settlement required migrant children to be detained in the least restrictive setting possible and only for about 20 days. The Trump administration defied it last week by announcing that it will soon detain children with their families indefinitely.

WISCONSIN CONGRESSMAN SEAN DUFFY RESIGNS… Republican Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy announced yesterday that he plans to resign next month and focus on his family. The five-term congressman says a daughter who is expected to arrive in October has a heart condition that will leave her needing “even more love, time and attention.” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers will call a special election to fill Dufy’s seat for the rest of his term, which runs until January 2021.

VIOLA DAVIS TO PLAY MICHELLE OBAMA IN SHOWTIME SERIES… Viola Davis has signed on to portray Michelle Obama in a Showtime series that is currently under development. The first season will focus on Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford and Obama.
