The Rundown for August 30, 2019

DORIAN GAINS STRENGTH ON WAY TO FLORIDA... Hurricane Dorian is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall in Florida over the weekend. The storm has already battered the U.S. Virgin Islands, but Puerto Rico has apparently dodged the worst of the devastation. President Trump declared yesterday that he has canceled his scheduled trip to Poland so he can monitor damage.

TRUMP PLANS TO BRING MORE TROOPS HOME FROM AFGANISTAN… President Trump plans to keep 8,600 U.S. troops in Afghanistan following a large-scale withdrawal. Trump said during a radio interview that the U.S. will decide on subsequent troop levels later. There are currently some 14,000 American troops stationed in Afghanistan. They are tasked with advising and assisting Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism operations.

SPACE COMMAND OFFICIALLY INTRODUCED… President Trump yesterday officially announced the establishment of the U.S. military’s Space Command. The new command will draw forces from other military branches in defending U.S. interests in space. Trump said the new SPACECOM will defend against threats to American satellites as well as detecting and destroying missiles launched against the U.S.

EPSTEIN SEX-TRAFFICKING CASE DROPPED… A federal judge in Manhattan yesterday dismissed a sex trafficking case against the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The dismissal came at the request of prosecutors less than a month after the defendant allegedly killed himself in jail while awaiting trial on the charges. During a hearing on Tuesday, dozens of Epstein’s accusers expressed their frustration that he wouldn’t face justice.

COMEY CRITICIZED FOR HANDLING OF MEMOS… A report released yesterday by the Justice Department’s inspector general criticized former FBI Director James Comey for violating FBI policies in his handling of memos documenting private conversations with President Trump. However, an internal investigation found no evidence that Comey or his attorneys released any classified internal FBI memos. The inspector general’s office said Comey broke bureau rules by giving one memo containing unclassified information to a friend with instructions to share the contents with a reporter. Comey also failed to return his memos to the FBI after he was dismissed in May 2017, according to the report.
