DORIAN NEARING CAROLINAS… Hurricane warning and watches are in effect throughout parts of Florida and the Carolinas as Dorian continues its approach. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to spin toward Charleston, South Carolina, this morning and skirt the coast until making landfall somewhere in the Carolinas tomorrow. The hurricane is already blamed for the deaths of at least 20 people in the northern Bahamas. Conditions forced the cancellation of about 800 flights in the Southeast yesterday.

DEFENSE FUNDS DIVERTED FOR WALL CONSTRUCTION… The Pentagon yesterday released the list of 127 Defense Department projects that will be set aside as part of a Trump administration plan to divert $3.6 billion toward the construction of a wall along the border with Mexico. The projects affected included the building of schools and daycare centers for military families, hazardous waste warehouse facilities and fire stations. President Trump declared a national emergency earlier this year to access the funds from the military construction budget.

FORMER WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL ACQUITTED… The three-week trial of former White House counsel Greg Craig concluded yesterday with the jury acquitting him on a charge of lying to the Justice Department about work he had done on behalf of Ukraine in 2012. The Justice Department claimed that Craig was acting as a foreign agent when he and his former law firm were hired to write a report about a high-profile political trial. The Justice Department accused Craig of acting as a foreign agent and failing to register his activity. Federal prosecutors filed charges after Craig allegedly made misleading statements to avoid the need to register. Craig served as special counsel to President Bill Clinton and was White House counsel in the first year of the Obama administration.

HOUSE PANEL SUBPOENAS OVER ALLEGED PARDON OFFERS… The House Judiciary Committee has filed subpoenas in response to President Trump’s alleged attempts to offer pardons to officials “carrying out his illegal and cruel immigration policies. The committee wants the Department of Homeland Security to turn over materials related to the matter. According to the New York Times, Trump told then-Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan that he would pardon him if he went to jail for illegally blocking migrants from entering the U.S. McAleenan, who currently serves as the acting Homeland Security secretary, has until September 17 to submit the requested materials.

EXECUTION IN TEXAS… A Texas death row inmate convicted in the fatal stabbing of an 89-year-old woman and her daughter in 2003 was executed in Texas last night. 64-year-old Billy Jack Crutsinger was administered a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the killings of Pearl Magouirk and her 71-year-old daughter, Patricia Syren. Crutsinger killed the two women and stole Syren’s car and credit card after entering the home under the pretense of a handyman.

MAN CHARGED FOR SELLING MAC MILLER A FATAL DOSE OF DRUGS… The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced yesterday that a California man is facing charges related to his alleged sale of counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl to Mack Miller before the rapper’s death in September 2018. The 26-year-old Miller died after snorting the bogus painkillers, according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed yesterday. Prosecutors also allege that 28-year-old Cameron James Pettit supplied Miller with other drugs prior to his death. An autopsy found that Miller, whose real name was Malcolm McCormick, died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.

POLITE INTRUDER AT TAYLOR SWIFT’S HOME ARRESTED… Police in Westerly, Rhode Island, confirmed yesterday that they arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly broke into Taylor Swift’s beachfront mansion on Friday. Officers responding to an alarm at the property found the suspect, Richard Joseph McEwan, barefoot inside. When asked why he had removed his shoes, McEwan explained that he had been taught that it was polite to take off your shoes before entering someone’s home. Charges against him include breaking and entering and willful trespassing.

N.Y. Mets 8 – WASHINGTON 4… Pete Alonso blasted his 45th homer to take the MLB lead and the Mets doubled up on the Nationals. Robinson Cano and Juan Lagares also went deep. Jeff McNeil stroked a pair of run-scoring singles.

CINCINNATI 8 – Philadelphia 5… The Reds recovered to down the Phillies after blowing a 5-0 lead. Jose Iglesias drilled a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Reliever Michael Lorenzen (1-4) hit a two-run homer in the eighth and finished the game playing center field. He became the first player since Babe Ruth on June 13, 1921, to hit a homer, play the outfield and be the winning pitcher in the same game.

PITTSBURGH 6 – Miami 5… Elias Diaz homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and Bryan Reynolds came through with a walkoff two-run single as the Pirates rallied past the Marlins. Adam Frazier went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

San Francisco 9 – ST. LOUIS 8… The Giants fought their way past the Cardinals after blowing four- and three-run leads. Kevin Pillar connected for a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning. Brandon Crawford blasted a three-run shot. Mike Yastrzemski also went deep.

ARIZONA – San Diego 1… Zac Gallen (3-4) limited the Padres to one hit over seven scoreless innings and the Diamondbacks pulled off the win. Ketel Marte broke a scoreless tie with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.

L.A. DODGERS 7 – Colorado 3… Joc Pederson homered twice and knocked in three runs to lead the Dodgers past the Rockies.

N.Y. YANKEES 4 – Texas 1… Aaron Judge homered with a runner aboard and Gleyber Torres added a solo shot as the Yankees cruised to the win. Five pitchers held the Rangers scoreless over the first eight innings.

BOSTON 6 – Minnesota 2… Mookie Betts went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers and five RBIs in leading the Red Sox past the Twins. Eduardo Rodriguez (17-5) pitched five-hit ball over seven scoreless innings.

CLEVELAND 8 – Chi. White Sox 6… Yu Chang’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the Indians’ win over the White Sox. Franmil Reyes blasted a two-run homer. Oscar Mercado went 3-for-4 with an RBI single. Shane Bieber (13-7) gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings.

KANSAS CITY 5 – Detroit 4… The Royals erased a 3-0 deficit on their way past the Tigers. Jorge Soler homered. Alex Gordon went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring single. Hunter Dozer had three hits and scored twice.

OAKLAND 4 – L.A. Angels 0… Tanner Roark (9-8) surrendered five hits over 6-2/3 innings and got help from two relievers in the shutout of the Angels. Marcus Semien homered with a runner aboard for the Athletics. Jurickson Profar and Sean Murphy also went deep.

U.S. OPEN TENNIS… 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu continued her magical run by defeating Elise Mertens yesterday to reach the semifinal round of the U.S. Open. The 15th-seeded Adnreescu next faces 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic, a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Donna Vekic. Fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina takes on eighth-seeded Serena Williams today in the women’s other semifinal. In the men’s quarterfinals, 24th-seeded Matteo Berrettini eliminated 13th-seeded Gael Monfils’s 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 7-6(5) and second-seeded Rafael Nadal downed 20th-seeded Diego Schartzman 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. The two winners meet in a semifinal-round match tomorrow. Fifth-seeded Daniil Mevedev and unseeded Grigor Dimitrov battle in the other semifinal matchup.
