DORIAN ARRIVES… Dorian has arrived in the Carolinas as a Category 2 hurricane. The storm has brought flooding, high winds, and tornadoes throughout coastal regions. Nearly a million people are under evacuation orders in South Carolina, and more evacuations were issued for the coast and barrier islands of North Carolina. South Carolina was expected to confront peak impacts last night while North Carolina will likely bear the brunt today. North Carolina’s Outer Banks appear to be directly in the storm’s path.

VAPING INVESTIGATION CENTERS ON VITAMIN E… Health officials say vitamin E acetate has become the focus of an investigation into vaping-related respiratory illnesses that have sickened 34 people in New York. As of yesterday, there were 361 confirmed or suspected cases nationwide, according to state health departments. Lab tests have revealed extremely high levels of vitamin E acetate in products that contained cannabis. The compound, which is commonly available as a nutritional supplement, is not known to be harmful when taken as a vitamin or applied to skin.

DEFENDANT ACQUITTED IN GHOST SHIP FIRE… A jury in Oakland, California, yesterday found one defendant not guilty on all counts in the deadly 2016 Ghost Ship fire. The trial for a second defendant ended in a hung jury. Max Harris and Derick Almena faced 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the warehouse fire that killed 36 people at an artist collective in December 2016. Victims were unable to escape after the blaze broke out during an electronic music show.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IMPOSES RECORD FINE ON MICHIGAN STATE… The Department of Education has fined Michigan State University a record $4.5 million for failing to protect students from sexual abuse and ordered the university to make changes. Two separate investigations were launched after a former sports doctor for the school and USA Gymnastics was accused of sexual abuse by more than 350 women. Dr. Larry Nassar was sentenced in two different trials to 300 years in prison for having abused young female gymnasts. Prosecutors said here he abused more than 265 people, many through his practice at Michigan State. Athletes had complained about Nassar since the 1990s but the school did not begin investigating him until 2014.

MANAFORT LAWYERS WANT STATE CHARGES TOSSED… Lawyers representing former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort have filed court papers seeking the dismissal of his New York mortgage fraud case. Attorneys say the state charges following Manafort’s federal convictions amount to double jeopardy. Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. announced state charges immediately after Manafort was sentenced last March in the second of his two federal cases.

ENTERTAINMENT
R. KELLY TRIAL DATE SET… A district court judge has set an initial trial date of April 27, 2020, for R. Kelly. The singer is accused of sexual misconduct charges, including recruiting women for sex, persuading people to conceal that he had sexual contact with teenage girls and buying back missing videotapes of the encounters. Kelly was ordered last month to remain in custody pending his trial.

IN THEATERS… Twenty-seven years after putting some distance between them and their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, members the Losers Club are brought back by a devastating phone call. Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy star in the R-rated horror film.

ST. LOUIS 10 – San Francisco 0… Dakota Hudson (15-6) limited the Giants to one hit over six innings and reliever Genesis Cabrera completed the shutout. Hudson helped himself at the plate with a two-run single. Paul DeJong and pinch-hitter Rangel Ravelo belted two-run homers.

ATLANTA 4 – Washington 2… Max Fried (16-4) pitched one-hit ball over seven scoreless innings and the Braves held off the Nationals. Ronald Acuña Jr. homered for Atlanta. Ozzie Albies went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single.

Chi. Cubs 10 – MILWAUKEE 5… Kyle Schwarber unloaded a grand slam to cap a five-run top of the sixth inning that carried the Cubs past the Brewers. Wilson Contreras stroked an RBI double and homered. David Bote also went deep.

Chi. White Sox 7 – CLEVELAND 1… Reynaldo Lopez (9-12) held the Indians to a run on a hit in a complete-game masterpiece. Welington Castillo homered with a runner aboard for the White Sox and finished with three RBIs. Yolmer Sanchez and Adam Engle knocked in two runs apiece..

Detroit 6 – KANSAS CITY 4… Brandon Dixon, Dawel Lugo and Jordy Mercer smacked solo homers in the top of the fourth inning to help power the Tigers past the Royals. Willi Castro produced a two-run single.

OAKLAND 10 – L.A. Angels 6… The Athletics erased a 5-1 deficit to down the Angels. Josh Phegley’s two-run homer sparked a seven-run bottom of the seventh inning. Jurickson Profar knocked in three runs. Robbie Grossman legged out a two-run triple.

Texas 3 – BALTIMORE 1… Nick Solak drilled a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning as the Rangers clipped the Orioles. Kolby Allard (4-0) allowed a run on eight hits over 6-1/3 innings.

Minnesota 2 – BOSTON 1… Martin Perez (10-6) held the Red Sox to a run on two hits over six innings and the Twins held on for the victory. Willians Astudillo singled home Miguel Sanó with a tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh inning.

TAMPA BAY 6 – Toronto 4… Austin Meadows hit a tie-breaking homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and doubled home a run in the eighth to push the Rays past the Blue Jays.

HOUSTON 11 – Seattle 9 (13 innings)… Michael Brantley connected for a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Astros came from seven runs down to outlast the Mariners. Both teams scored single runs in the 12th. Kyle Tucker and Josh Reddick also homered for Houston.

The eighth-seeded Williams advances to take on 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu of Canada, a 15th seed, in tomorrow’s final. The men’s semifinals are set for today.
