TRUMP PROMPTED EXTRACTION OF RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE SOURCE… The U.S. successfully extracted one of its highest-level covert sources inside the Russian government as part of a previously undisclosed secret mission in 2017, CNN and other sources reported yesterday. Intelligence officials said the Russian was removed out of fear that President Trump and his administration could contribute to exposing the covert source as a spy. NBC News reported that the source is now living in the Washington, D.C., area. The president raised concerns when he discussed highly classified intelligence with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and then-Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.

COMMERCE SECRETARY ROSS IMPLICATED IN SHARPIEGATE… The New York Times reported yesterday that Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross threatened to fire NOAA officials whose employees at the agency’s Birmingham, Alabama, office contradicted President Trump’s false claim that Alabama would be hit by Hurricane Dorian. A September 1 Trump tweet warning that Alabama “will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated” prompted the National Weather Service in Birmingham to tweet in response, “Alabama will NOT see any impacts from Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane Dorian will be felt across Alabama.” Ross reportedly threatened to fire acting NOAA administrator Neil Jacobs when he refused to “fix the perceived correction of the president,” according to the report.

HOUSE PANEL WARNS FLYNN TO COMPLY WITH SUBPOENA… House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff threatened to take action against Michael Flynn in a letter released yesterday. Schiff accused Flynn of failing to comply with the committee’s subpoena or cooperate with committee members. The panel ordered Flynn to turn over relevant documents “no later than” September 18 and appear for testimony on September 25. Schiff’s lettered noted that if Flynn fails to comply, “the Committee will have no choice but to consider appropriate measures to enforce the subpoena.”

ATTORNEYS GENERAL LAUNCH GOOGLE ANTITRUST INVESTIGATION… Attorneys general of 50 states and territories have launched a bipartisan antitrust investigation into Google and its business practices. The bipartisan investigation is being led by four Democrats and four Republicans. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leading the investigation, says the probe’s initial focus would be on online advertising. Investigators want to know whether Google is monopolizing online advertising by embedding itself on every level of the market.

FEDS INVESTIGATE DEADLY DIVE-BOAT FIRE… Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the dive-boat fire off the Southern California coast that left 34 people dead on September 2. The probe headed by the Coast Guard’s criminal investigative group will determine whether the boat’s owners violated maritime safety regulations. The boat has passed its two most recent inspections, according to Coast Guard records.

HBO RENEWS ‘GEMSTONES’… HBO announced yesterday that it is bringing back the comedy series “The Righteous Gemstones” for a second season. The announcement come as the series is four episodes into its first season, which premiered last month. Danny McBride, John Goodman, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, Walton Goggins, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Tim Baltz and Greg Alan Williams star in the series about a famous televangelist family. McBride is the show’s creator and executive producer.

LITTLE BIG TOWN TO RELEASE ALBUM AND TOUR… Little Big Town has announced plans to release a new album and hit the road for an accompanying North American tour. The album, “Nightfall,” is scheduled for release on January 17. The 18-stop tour kicks off the day before at Carnegie Hall in New York. The tour ends May 2 in Denver.

NEW ORLEANS 30 – Houston 28… Wil Lutz booted a 58-yard field goal as time expired to send the Saints past the Texans. Drew Brees passed for 370 yards and two touchdowns.

OAKLAND 24 – Denver 16… Josh Jacobs rushed for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Raiders’ win. Derek Carr completed 22 of 26 passes for 259 yards.

Atlanta 7 – PHILADELPHIA 2… Josh Donaldson blasted a three-run homer and Ronald Acuna connected for a solo shot as the Braves downed the Phillies to notch their 90th victory of the season. Mike Foltynewicz (6-5) allowed just a run on three hits over seven innings.

N.Y. METS 3 – Arizona 1… Jacob deGrom (9-8) held the Diamondbacks to a run on three hits and struck out 11 over seven innings. Pete Alonso hit his 46th and 47th homers.

Milwaukee 8 – MIAMI 3… Trent Grisham went 5-for-6 with a two-run triple in leading the Brewers past the Marlins. Yasmani Grandal homered with a runner aboard.

 Pittsburgh 6 – SAN FRANCISCO 4… Kevin Newman lined a two-run single and came around to score on Jose Osuna’s sacrifice fly as the Pirates put up four runs in the top of the ninth inning to upend the Giants. Jacob Stallings homered to lead off the fifth.

Chi. Cubs 10 – SAN DIEGO 2… Nico Hoerner went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple and two-run single as the Cubs walloped the Padres. Nicholas Castellanos’ three hits included a two-run homer. Kyle Schwarber also went deep. Kyle Hendricks (10-9) gave up two runs on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings. One of the runs was unearned.

N.Y. Yankees 5 – BOSTON 0… James Paxton (13- 6) pitched four-hit ball over 6-2/3 innings and got help from three relievers in the Yankees’ blanking of the Red Sox. Austin Romine and Gio Urshela hit solo homers.

HOUSTON 15 – Oakland 0… The Astros opened with a six-run bottom of the first inning and never looked back in their bombing of the Athletics. Robinson Chirinos went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and six RBIs. Alvarez also homered twice. Alex Bregman belted a three-run homer. Jose Altuve went 3-for-3 with a two-run blast. Michael Brantley also went deep. Zack Greinke (15-5) limited Oakland to two hits over six innings. Two relievers completed the shutout.

Cleveland 6 – L.A. ANGELS 2… Shane Bieber (14-7) held the Angels to a run on five hits over seven innings and the Indians cruised past the Angels. Jason Kipnis drilled a two-run homer and Yu Chang added a three-run shot.
