BARR NAMED IN WHISTLEBLOWER COMPLAINT… Attorney General William Barr was named in the whistleblower complaint against President Trump. The complaint claims Barr was directly involved in the effort from Trump to “solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.” According to the complaint, Trump instructed the Ukrainian president to follow up on the requests he’d made with Giuliani and Barr. The Justice Department had unsuccessfully tried to withhold names as being part of the alleged misconduct that sparked the complaint.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO CONTINUE GOVERNMENT FUNDING… The Senate yesterday passed stopgap spending legislation to prevent a looming government shutdown and retain federal funding through November 21. The bill was passed by an 81-16 vote and President Trump is expected to sign it. Funding would have expired on Monday.

ECONOMY GROWTH SLOWS… The Commerce Department reported yesterday that the U.S. economy’s growth slipped to an annualized rate of 2 percent in the second quarter. Rises of at least 3 percent had been recorded over the past year. According to analysts’ forecasts, global weakness and rising trade tensions will slow growth in the coming quarters.

PENTAGON RELEASES SUICIDE REPORT… The Pentagon’s annual suicide report released yesterday found there were 541 suicides among U.S. active duty, reserve and National Guard troops in 2018. According to the report, 187 Army soldiers, 77 Marines, 79 Navy sailors and 63 airmen in the active and reserve ranks took their own lives. The Army National Guard experienced 118 suicides, while the Air National Guard experienced 17. Rates among the active-duty ranks increased from 18.5 to 24.8 per 100,000 service members between 2013 and 2018.

INVESTIGATORS BLAME SOFTWARE IN 737 MAX CRASHES… An investigation released yesterday by the National Transportation Safety Board claims Boeing did not account for how new software would impact operation of the 737 Max. Investigators say software that was automated to move the plane’s tail and push the nose down also activated other malfunctions inside the cockpit. The 737 Max has been grounded while Boeing works on software updates.

ENTERTAINMENT
JENNIFER LOPEZ, SHAKIRA TO PERFORM AT HALFTIME SHOW… Jennifer Lopez and Shakira have signed on to perform at the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show. The game is scheduled for February 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The game will be aired on Fox, with broadcasts in 180 countries.

IN THEATERS… “Judy” tells the story about legendary performer Judy Garland, who arrives in London in 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts. Renee Zellweger and Jessie Buckley star in the PG-13 film. In the animated feature “Abominable,” a magical Yeti must return to his family. It’s rated PG.

BASEBALL HEADING INTO FINAL WEEKEND… Two playoff spots are still at stake as Major League baseball heads into its final weekend of the regular season. Both postseason vacancies are in the American League, where neither wild-card spots have been filled. Oakland holds a one-game lead over Tampa Bay in the race for the top wild-card spot while Cleveland is two games back. The N.Y. Yankees, Minnesota and Houston have clinched their divisions. In the National League, the L.A. Dodgers have clinched the Western Division and Atlanta has clinched the Eastern. St. Louis holds a one-game lead over Milwaukee atop the Central Division but both teams have clinched a trip to the postseason. Washington leads Milwaukee by a game in the race for the top wild-card spot.
