The Rundown for October 11, 2019

GIULIANI ASSOCIATES ARRESTED… Federal prosecutors in New York formally announced federal campaign finance charges yesterday against two foreign-born associates of President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani. The charges stem from Giuliani’s efforts to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden. Ukrainian-born Lev Parnas and Belarus native Igor Fruman are accused of conspiring to “circumvent the federal laws against foreign interference by engaging in a scheme to funnel foreign money to candidates for federal and state office,” according to a four-count indictment in the Southern District of New York. Two other men, David Correia and Andrey Kukushkin, also face charges that include conspiracy, falsifying records and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission. Trump denied knowing Parnas and Fruman despite dining with them at the White House and appearing with them in multiple photographs. The two men were arrested Tuesday night at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., as they were preparing to board a flight to Vienna, Austria, with one-way tickets. They headed to the airport after having lunch with Giuliani.

TRUMP’S RELATIONS WITH UKRAINE SPARKED CONCERN… The Washington Post reported yesterday that at least four national security officials raised concerns about Trump’s relations with Ukraine before and after his July 25 call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump’s removal of U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in May raised red flags. Officials also became alarmed when U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, claimed that he had been put in charge of Ukraine relations by Trump. Sondland also reportedly stated in a meeting that dropped investigations in Ukraine “need to be started up again,” which many understood to be a reference to corruption probes into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

RICK PERRY SUBPOENAED… Secretary of Energy Rick Perry was subpoenaed yesterday for documents related to Congress’ impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Congressman Adam Schiff, Elijah Cummings and Eliot Engel sent Perry a letter seeking information about his involvement in a July call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The call was detailed in a whistle-blower’s report. The three House committee chairmen want to know if Perry had a role “conveying or reinforcing” Trump’s message that the U.S. would provide Ukraine with military aid on the condition that it investigated the Bidens. They also want to determine whether Perry to pressed Ukrainian officials to change the management structure of a Ukrainian state-owned energy company to benefit individuals involved with an effort by Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani to solicit Ukrainian interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The subpoena requests that Perry provide the documents by October 18.

EL PASO SHOOTER PLEADS NOT GUILTY… The man accused of killing 22 people and injuring 25 more at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on August 3 entered a not-guilty plea yesterday. 21-year-old Patrick Crusius is facing capital murder charges and El Paso County District Attorney Jaime Esparza has said she will seek the death penalty. Investigators believe Crusius drove from Dallas to El Paso in order to target Hispanics.

SNOWSTORM BLANKETS PLAINS STATES… Central and northern plains states were hammered yesterday by a powerful snowstorm, cold temperatures and high winds. Conditions forced school closures and were blamed for dozens of vehicle crashes. The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to produce as much as 2 feet of snow in parts of central and eastern North Dakota and up to 10 inches of snow in portions of Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana through tomorrow night.
