The Rundown for October 25, 2019

DOJ INVESTIGATING ITS OWN RUSSIA PROBE… The New York Times reported yesterday that the Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the origins of its own Russia probe. Analysts immediately expressed fear that it’s a sign that Trump is targeting people he considers to be his enemies. Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is in charge of the probe, now has the power to issue subpoenas for witness testimony and documents, to enlist a grand jury and to file criminal charges.

REPORT ASSAILS ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE… A 100-page inspector general’s report released yesterday claims the Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection hasn’t fulfilled its core mission to turn around the Department of Veterans Affairs’ culture of retaliation against whistleblowers. The office became one of President Trump’s signature initiatives when it was created two years ago but the report says it has punished those it was intended to protect and held few wrongdoers accountable. The office has shown “significant deficiencies” from the top to the bottom, including poor leadership, uneven training, and a failure to discipline senior leaders for misconduct, according to the report.

EDUCATION SECRETARY DeVOS HELD IN CONTEMPT… A federal judge yesterday held Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in contempt of court and imposed a $100,000 fine for violating an order to stop collecting on the student loans owed by students of a defunct for-profit college. The action was a response to the Trump administration’s admission earlier this year that it erroneously collected on the loans of some 16,000 borrowers who attended Corinthian Colleges despite being ordered to stop doing so. DeVos was named in the federal lawsuit but her $100,000 in monetary sanctions will be paid by the government.

TIM RYAN ENDS PRESIDENTIAL BID… Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio announced yesterday that he’s dropping out of the 2020 Democratic presidential race. The 46-year-old Ryan came up short in polling and donation requirements to qualify for the last two Democratic debates. When he launched his campaign in April, he said he was motivated to improve the economy following the closure of an Ohio auto plant. In other campaign news, Tulsi Gabbard announced last night that she won’t seek re-election to Congress so that she can concentrate on her presidential campaign. Gabbard, a Democrat who represents Hawaii’s second district, has been polling at less than 2 percent in her White House run.

LOS ANGELES-AREA FIRES PROMPT EVACUATIONS… At least 40,000 people north of Los Angeles were issued mandatory evacuation orders yesterday after two fires swept to the edges of residential neighborhoods. As of last night, authorities said there was no containment of either blaze. Flames were fanned by dry winds that were expected to reach 70 mph.

ENTERTAINMENT
SECRET SERVICE INTERVIEWED EMINEM… The Secret Service has turned over 40 pages of documents that proved agents interviewed rapper Eminem after the release of his 2018 album “Revival.” The interviews were a response to “threatening lyrics” from his rap “Framed.” A TMZ employee reported the lyrics hours after the entertainment gossip company wrote about the anti-Donald Trump references. The information was revealed as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request filed by BuzzFeed News.

IN THEATERS… In “Black and Blue,” a rookie police officer in New Orleans has to balance her identity as a black woman with her role as a police officer when she witnesses other police officers committing murder. Naomie Harris and Mike Colter star in the R-rated film. “The Last Full Measure” tells the story about an airman who is awarded the nation’s highest military honor 34 years after his death. Bradley Whitford and Samuel L. Jackson star in the R-rated film.
