DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE BREAKS WITH TRUMP IN TESTIMONY… Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan broke with President Trump in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday. Sullivan testified that it would not be “in accord with our values” for a president to ask a foreign government to investigate a political rival. Sullivan’s testimony came as he was being vetted to become the next U.S. ambassador to Russia.

JOHN BOLTON ASKED TO TESTIFY… Congressional investigators have formally asked former national security adviser John Bolton to testify in their impeachment inquiry on November 7. Investigators have also asked White House lawyers John Eisenberg and Michael Ellis to testify on November 4. Bolton reportedly won’t testify voluntarily but would provide testimony if subpoenaed.

PATHOLOGIST SUSPECTS HOMICIDE IN EPSTEIN’S DEATH… Prominent forensic pathologist Michael Baden claimed yesterday that evidence suggests convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein died as the result of homicide, not suicide. The findings of Bader, who was hired by Epstein’s family, contradicts the New York City medical examiner who concluded that the late financier’s death in August was caused by hanging in his Manhattan jail cell. Baden said Epstein had a number of injuries that “are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation.”

ECONOMY GROWTH SLOWS… U.S. economic growth slowed during the third quarter as business investment declined, according to figures released yesterday. Gross domestic product rose at an annual rate of 1.9 percent from July through September, according to the Commerce Department. The economy grew at a 2 percent annual rate in the second quarter.

CALIFORNIA CREWS BATTLING 10 ACTIVE FIRES… Fire officials in California reported that two new fires that broke out yesterday brought the number of major fires in the state to 10. The Easy fire between Simi Valley and Moorpark in Ventura County came within 30 yards of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which was evacuated but not damaged. The Hill fire broke out in Riverside County’s Jurupa Valley. The Kincade fire, which broke out last week in Northern California’s Sonoma County, had burned through nearly 77,000 acres and was 30 percent contained by yesterday morning.

JOHN WITHERSPOON DIES… Actor and comedian John Witherspoon has died, his family has confirmed. He was 77. Witherspoon was best known for his role as Ice Cube’s dad in the “Friday” films. He also appeared in The Wayans Bros TV series, voiced the grandfather in “The Boondocks” animated series and was also a frequent guest on “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

CUBA GOODING JR. ARRAIGNMENT TODAY… Cuba Gooding Jr. is facing a new accuser and new charges in his New York City sexual misconduct case, his lawyer revealed yesterday. The 51-year-old Oscar-winning actor is scheduled to be arraigned today on an updated misdemeanor indictment. A third accuser has joined a case that began in June when a 29-year-old woman accused Gooding of squeezing her breast without consent at Manhattan nightclub.

SPORTS
NATIONALS WIN WORLD SERIES… The Washington Nationals erased a 2-0 seventh-inning deficit on their way to beating the Houston Astros 6-2 in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. Anthony Rendon homered with the bases empty and Howie Kendrick added a two-run shot in the top of the seventh. Adam Eaton produced a two-run single in the ninth to cap the scoring. Rendon was named the series’ MVP. The victory gave the nation’s capital its first World Series champion since the 1924 Washington Senators. The seven-game series was the only one in which the home team didn’t win a game.

PHILADELPHIA 117 – Minnesota 95… The 76ers’ Joel Embiid led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points before he and the Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns were ejected for fighting. Al Horford had 12 points and 16 rebounds.

CLEVELAND 117 – Chicago 111… Tristan Thompson pumped in 23 points for the Cavaliers. Kevin Love finished with 17 points and 20 boards.

ORLANDO 95 – New York 83… The Magic pulled past the Knicks in the second half. Nikola Vucevic had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

TORONTO 125 – Detroit 113… Pascal Siakam scored 19 of his 30 points in the third quarter to lead the Raptors past the Pistons. Fred VanVleet had 13 points and 11 assists.

BOSTON 116 – Milwaukee 105… The Celtics rallied past the Bucks after trailing by 15 after the first quarter. Kemba Walker scored 21 of his 32 points in the second half.

Indiana 118 – BROOKLYN 108… The Pacers got 29 points from Domantas Sabonis and 25 from Jeremy Lamb in downing the Nets for their first win of the season.

Portland 102 – OKLAHOMA CITY 99… Damian Lillard scored 23 points and dished off 13 assists as the Trail Blazers held off the Thunder. CJ McCollum tossed in 22 points.

Houston 159 – WASHINGTON 158… James Harden made a go-ahead free throw with 2.4 seconds remaining and finished with 59 points as the Rockets outscored the Wizards. Clint Capela had 21 points and 12 boards. Russell Westbrook added 17 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Charlotte 118  – SACRAMENTO 111… The Hornets took control with a bg third quarter and hung on to top the Kings. PJ Washington scored 23 points and Terry Rozier added 22.

UTAH 110 – L.A. Clippers 96… Mike Conley scored 24 points, Donovan Mitchell added 24 and the Jazz handled a Clippers team that rested Kawhi Leonard.

Phoenix 121 – GOLDEN STATE 110… The Suns jumped out to a 43-14 lead after the first quarter and coasted past a Warrior team that lost Stephen Curry to a broken hand suffered after a fall. Devin Booker scored a game-high 31 points. Aron Baynes had 24 points and 12 boards.

Tampa Bay 7 – NEW JERSEY 6 (OT).. Tyler Johnson found the net 1:16 into overtime to left the Lightning over the Devils. Ondrej Palat scored two goals and had an assist.

Edmonton 4 – COLUMBUS 1… Leon Draisaitl scored two goals and assisted on another as the Oilers skated past the Blue Jackets. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on two goals.

ST. LOUIS 2 – Minnesota 1… Alex Pietrangelo netted a go-ahead goal 1:39 into the third period and the Blues held on to edge the Wild. Goalie Jordan Binnington made 35 saves.

Florida 3 – COLORADO 3 (OT)… The Panthers came from two goals down in the tird period to outlast the Avalanche. Jonathan Huberdeau netted the tying goal with 1:30 left in regulation and added the winning goal 29 seconds into overtime.

Montreal 4 – ARIZONA 1… Shea Weber had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens in their defeat of the Coyotes. Carey Price made 33 saves at goal.

Vancouver 5 – LOS ANGELES 3… Brock Boeser scored three goals and had an assist as the Canucks skated past the Kings. Elias Pettersson added a goal and three assists.
