The Rundown for November 1, 2019

HOUSE VOTES TO APPROVE IMPEACHMENT FRAMEWORK… The House voted 232-196 yesterday to approve the rules for its impeachment inquiry of President Trump. The measure detailed how the inquiry will move into a more public phase and sets out due process rights for Trump’s lawyers under the congressional inquiry. The president is accused of trying to pressure Ukraine into investigating unsubstantiated corruption claims against Joe Biden, and Biden’s son Hunter, who was on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma.

FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY AIDE TESTIFIES… In closed testimony before Congress yesterday, former National Security Aide Tim Morrison corroborated testimony that Trump sought a quid pro quo with Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden. Morrison, who listened to Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, testified during more than eight hours of testimony that he was told Trump wanted a top Ukrainian official to announce an investigation into Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Morrison said he was concerned the July 25 call transcript of the phone call would leak and have negative ramifications.

TRUMP ACCUSED OF BRIBING SENATORS… President Trump is facing bribery accusations for allegedly giving Republican senators fundraising cash ahead of an increasingly likely impeachment trial in the Senate. Politico reported yesterday that Trump is soliciting his supporters to raise money for a handful of loyal senators facing tough reelection bids in 2020. All of those senators have also signed a resolution condemning the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry. Richard Painter, an attorney who served as the chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, warned that Trump appeared to be committing “felony bribery.”

KEYSTONE PIPELINE LEAK… More than 383,000 gallons of crude oil has leaked out of the controversial Keystone pipeline, North Dakota state environmental regulators announced yesterday. The spill affected about 22,500 square feet of land near Edinburg in Walsh County. According to regulators, it did not affect any sources of drinking water but did cover an estimated half-acre of wetland. The pipeline has been shut down since crews discovered the leak on Tuesday night.

CHICAGO TEACHERS STRIKE ENDS… The Chicago teachers strike ended yesterday after Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot and the union president agreed that teachers and students would make up five of the 11 days lost. Teachers voted to accept a tentative agreement with City Hall on Wednesday night but continued striking through yesterday while final details were being worked out. The strike affected about 350,000 students in the nation’s third largest district.
