The Rundown for November 13, 2019

PUBLIC IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS BEGIN TODAY… Public impeachment hearings begin today in the investigation into President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, the State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, are today’s scheduled witnesses. In their depositions, both raised concerns over the Trump administration’s attempts to pressure Ukraine into investigating Trump’s political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter. On Friday, the committee will hear from Marie Yovanovitch, who was ousted as ambassador to Ukraine earlier this year after Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani led a campaign to discredit her.

REPORT: STEPHEN MILLER PUSHED WHITE NATIONALIST POLICIES… The Southern Poverty Law Center cited leaked emails in claiming that White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller pushed white-nationalist materials on staffers at the right-wing website Breitbart prior to the 2016 presidential election. The investigative report also accused Miller of condemning those wishing to remove Confederate monuments and flags from public display in the wake of Dylann Roof’s mass killings in the 2015 attack on a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Miller has been credited with orchestrating Trump’s restrictionist immigration policies, the report noted. The emails were leaked by a former Breitbart writer.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL INFLATED RESUME… NBC News reported yesterday that a senior Trump administration official inflated her resume with several misleading claims about her education, professional background and nonprofit work. Mina Chang, a deputy assistant secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stability Operations, allegedly falsely claimed she was a Harvard Business School graduate and exaggerated the extent of her nonprofit’s work. She even created a fake Time magazine cover with her face on it, according to the report. The 35-year-old Chang, who started her position in April, also allegedly made up a role on a United Nations panel, falsely stated she addressed both the Democratic and Republican national conventions and erroneously implied she had previously testified before Congress.

GATES TESTIMONY: TRUMP INVOLVED IN WIKILEAKS DUMP DISCUSSIONS… The Trump campaign was aware of WikiLeaks’ plans to release stolen Democratic National Committee campaign emails much earlier than it has claimed and President lied about his involvement in conversations about the issue, according to testimony offered yesterday by former Trump campaign official Rick Gates. Testifying yesterday in the trial of Trump adviser Roger Stone, Gates said the release put the Trump campaign “in a state of happiness.” After the dump of thousands of private conversations between Hillary Clinton and her team, Stone told Trump that “more information would be coming,” Gates testified. Stone is accused of knowingly lying to Congress about his interactions with WikiLeaks to protect the president.

SANDY HOOK PLAINTIFFS CAN PROCEED WITH SUIT AGAINST GUNMAKER… A Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting survivor and the families of nine victims may proceed with a lawsuit against the maker of the rifle used in the 2012 massacre that left 26 people dead, according to a Supreme Court ruling yesterday. The High Court rejected an appeal by Remington Arms that argued a 2005 federal law prevents firearms manufacturers from liability when their products are used in crimes. Plaintiffs maintained that Remington should not have sold a weapon as deadly as the Bushmaster rifle that gunman Adam Lanza used to kill 20 children and six adult staff members in 2012. It also accused Remington of targeting younger males in its marketing campaigns and product placement in video games.
