TRUMP SIGNS GOVERNMENT FUNDING BILL… President Trump yesterday signed legislation that extends funding for federal agencies through December 20 and avoids partial government shutdowns that would have taken effect at midnight. The signing came after the bill passed the Senate by a 74-20 vote. House and Senate negotiators are hoping to come up with legislation to keep the government operating through the end of this fiscal year on September 30, 2020.

IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY… Former National Security Council staffer Dr. Fiona Hill and David Holmes, an embassy official in Kiev, Ukraine, testified yesterday to conclude the initial round of the impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. The inquiry centers on whether Trump tried to pressure the Ukrainian government into launching a baseless and self-benefitting investigation into Trump’s political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Hill detailed a July 10 meeting in which U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland discussed a deal that would grant Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a White House visit in exchange for the Biden investigations. Holmes followed up on his claim that he overheard a July 26 phone call between U.S. Ambassador to the E.U. Gordon Sondland and Trump in which he told the president that Zelensky was willing to comply with any of his demands.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ROLLS BACK CHEMICAL SAFETY RULES… The Trump administration yesterday rolled back Obama-era chemical safety rules that require companies to inform the public about the chemicals they store at their facilities. The rules were put in place following the 2013 explosion at a fertilizer plant that killed 15 people in West, Texas. The fatalities included 12 first responders who were battling a blaze at the fertilizer plant when more than 80,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate exploded.

TRUMP ORG CFO INVESTIGATED… Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.has launched an investigation into Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg. A grand jury is seeking to determine whether Weisselberg and others the organization falsified business records. Weisselberg was implicated in the $130,000 payment President Trump made to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter.

TWO DEAD IN MILITARY JET CRASH… The crash of two jets during the landing phase of a training exercise at a U.S. Air Force base yesterday morning in northwestern Oklahoma left two airmen dead, according to military officials. The crash occurred shortly at Vance Air Force Base in Enid involved two T-38 Talons. The two service members killed were aboard one of the planes. Two airmen on the other were not injured.

ENTERTAINMENT
HOLLY HUNTER, TED DANSON LAND NBC SITCOM… NBC announced yesterday that Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Holly Hunter has signed on to co-star with Ted Danson in a new, untitled comedy. Hunter will portray a liberal Los Angeles councilwoman who clashes with the wealthy businessman/newly elected mayor played by Danson. Hunter’s film credits include “The Piano,” “Broadcast News” and “Oh Brother Where Art Thou.” Danson most recently starred in the NBC sitcom “The Good Place.”

IN THEATERS… “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood” stars Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys star in the real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. The film is rated PG. “21 Bridges” tells the story about an embattled NYPD detective who is thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy. Chadwick Boseman and Sienna Miller star in the R-rated film. In the animated feature “Frozen II,” characters journey to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land to gather powers that would allow them to save their kingdom. It’s rated PG.

MILWAUKEE 137 – Portland 129… The Bucks built an early double-digit lead and held off the Trail Blazers. Eric Bledsoe pumped in 30 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo piled up 24 points, 19 rebounds and 15 assists.

New Orleans 124 – PHOENIX 121… The Pelicans held on down the stretch to get past the Suns. Brandon Ingram led the way with 28 points. J.J. Redick added 26 points and Jrue Holiday tossed in 23.

BOSTON 3 – Buffalo 2… David Pasternak’s NHL-leading 20th goal came early in the third period and proved to be the difference in the Bruins’ win over the Sabres. Brad Marchand scored Boston’s first two goals.

FLORIDA 5 – Anaheim 4 (OT)… The Panthers rolled past the Ducks after spotting them a four-goal lead. Aaron Ekblad won it with his second goal of the game 22 seconds into overtime. Brett Connolly also found the net twice.

N.Y. ISLANDERS 4 – Pittsburgh 3 (OT)… Brock Nelson’s second goal of the game at 4:16 of overtime lifted the Islanders over the Penguins. Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and an assist. Matthew Barzal assisted on three goals.

Philadelphia 5 – CAROLINA 3… Claude Giroux scored two goals and assisted on two others in leading the Flyers past the Hurricanes. Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist.

COLUMBUS 5 – Detroit 4… The Blue Jackets scored three third-period goals and held on to edge the Red Wings. Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson each had a goal and assist.

ST. LOUIS 5 – Calgary 0… Goalie Jordan Binnington stopped all 40 shots in the Blues’ blanking of the Flames. Oskar Sundqvist netted two goals.

Vancouver 6 – NASHVILLE 3… Six different players found the net as the Canucks doubled up on the Predators. Elias Pettersson scored a goal and assisted on two others.

MINNESOTA 3 – Colorado 2… The Wild recovered to top the Avalanche after blowing a two-goal lead. Jason Zucker scored a tie-breaking goal midway through the third period.

Tampa Bay 4 – CHICAGO 2… Anthony Cirelli scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Lightning past the Blackhawks. Goalie Curtis McElhenney made 32 saves.

DALLAS 5 – Winnipeg 3… Jamie Benn scored a go-ahead goal with 4:21 remaining as the Stars downed the Jets. Corey Perry had three assists.

Toronto 3 – ARIZONA 1… The Maple Leafs got goals from Tyson Barrie, Pierre Engvall and Auston Matthews in skating past the Coyotes. Frederik Andersen made 30 saves at goal.

San Jose 2 – VEGAS (OT(… Logan Couture lit the lamp at 3:20 of overtime to send the Sharks past the Golden Knights. Goalie Aaron Dell stopped 47 shots.

LOS ANGELES 5 – Edmonton 1… The Kings opened with a three-goal first period and never looked back in their win over the Oilers. Tyler Toffoli scored two goals and had an assist.
