The Rundown for November 29, 2019

TRUMP VISITS AFGHANISTAN… President Trump made a surprise visit to Afghanistan for the first time yesterday. After arriving at Bagram Air Field, he spent time with U.S. troops and passed out meals of turkey and mashed potatoes. The visit came a week after Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise visit to Iraq’s Al Asad airbase and served meals to the servicemen and women.

STORM PUMMELS MIDWEST… A powerful winter storm rolled across the Midwest and disrupted Thanksgiving Day travel early yesterday. The storm was blamed for one death and hundreds of canceled flights as it pushed east from the Rockies into South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It dropped close to a foot of snow in some areas even as the system weakened and headed toward New York and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, a “bomb cyclone” caused by a rapid drop in air pressure brought snow to the mountains and wind and rain along the California and Oregon coasts.

NO RECORD OF TRUMP’S ‘NO QUID PRO QUO’ CALL… The Washington Post reported yesterday that the White House has not found a record of the September 9 phone call recounted by U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland in which he testified that President Trump told him he wanted “no quid pro quo” with Ukraine. White House officials reportedly searched switchboard logs on that date but couldn’t corroborate the call. Trump has touted Sondland’s recollection of the conversation as a crucial part of his defense, claiming it clears him of any wrongdoing in the impeachment inquiry.

CHINA WARNS U.S. OVER HONG KONG LAW… China issued a stern warning to the U.S. yesterday that it would take “firm counter measures” after President Trump signed legislation that backs pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. The new law requires the State Department to annually certify that Hong Kong is an autonomous city in order to continue its trading relationship with the financial hub. Chinese government officials reportedly told U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad that Washington must immediately stop interfering in China’s domestic affairs. Protesters in Hong Kong responded by holding a peaceful “thanksgiving” rally complete with American flags to express gratitude for the support.

EVACUATIONS REMAINSAFTER CHEMICAL FIRE… More than 50,000 people in East Texas remained under a mandatory evacuation order yesterday as a fire continued to burn at a chemical plant in Port Neches. The blazed followed two massive explosions there on Wednesday. Officials say they don’t know when people will be able to return to their homes.

ENTERTAINMENT
MADONNA TAKES BREAK TO RECOVER… Madonna has announced that she is taking a break from touring to recover from unspecified health issues. The 61-year-old singer is promoting her latest album “Madame X.” The tour kicked off in September in New York and included stops in Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, London and Paris.

IN THEATERS… In “Knives Out,” a detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family. Daniel Craig and Chris Evans star in the PG-13 film. “Queen & Slim” tells the story about a couple whose first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over. The R-rated film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith.
