DEMOCRATS PRESENT IMPEACHMENT CASE TO JUDICIARY COMMITTEE… Democratic investigators started presenting their impeachment case against President Trump yesterday at a hearing on Capitol Hill. In presenting evidence to the House judiciary committee, House intelligence committee investigative director Daniel Goldman turned over a 300-page report based on weeks of public and private testimony alleging Trump pressured the Ukrainian government to investigate Trump’s political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Goldman also referred to Trump’s actions as dangerous, saying he “launched an unprecedented campaign of obstruction of Congress” and dismissing as “patently false” Trump’s allegations that Biden acted corruptly in his interactions with Ukraine. Republican lawyer Steve Castor referred to the Democratic case as “baloney.”

INSPECTOR GENERAL REPORT FINDS NO ILLEGALITIES… The Department of Justice’s Inspector General claimed in a report released yesterday that there was nothing improper or illegal in the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The 476-page report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz defied accusations by the Trump administration that the FBI illegally spied on former campaign adviser Carter Page while searching for evidence of collusion. “We did not find any documentary or testimonial evidence that political bias or improper motivation influenced the FBI’s decision to conduct these operations,” the report concluded. The report did specify 17 inaccuracies involving three applications filed under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, but said agents did not act improperly in their activities.

CHRISTOPHER STEELE WAS FRIENDS WITH IVANKA TRUMP… Among revelations stemming from yesterday’s Inspector General’s report was that former British foreign intelligence agency officer Christopher Steele had an extended friendship with Ivanka Trump. A dossier compiled by Steele detailed Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia. According to the report, Steele even gifted Ivanka Trump a “family tartan from Scotland.” The report did not mention Ivanka Trump by name but her identity was confirmed by ABC News. Donald Trump has repeatedly blasted Steele on social media, describing him as a “failed spy” and claiming that the dossier he compiled was “phony.”

WAPO: U.S. GOVERNMENT LIED ABOUT AFGHANISTAN WAR… The Washington Post yesterday published more than 2,000 pages of secret notes that indicate the U.S. government has misled citizens about the progress of the war in Afghanistan. The notes show that U.S. officials made positive statements they knew were inaccurate and concealed evidence that the war wasn’t winnable. John Sopko, head of the federal agency that carried out the interviews, told the newspaper the files show “the American people have constantly been lied to.”

SUPREME COURT LETS STAND KENTUCKY ABORTION LAW… Kentucky’s tough new abortion law cleared a final hurdle yesterday when the Supreme Court declined to hear opposing arguments. The Ultrasound Informed Consent Act was signed into law in 2017 by then-Republican Governor Matt Bevin. It requires physicians to show women seeking abortions ultrasound images of their unborn fetuses. The high court dismissed a challenge to an April decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati that upheld the law.
