The Rundown for December 20, 2019

SENATE LEADERS NEGOTIATING TRUMP TRIAL TERMS… Senate leaders are negotiating terms for the trial of President Trump following his impeachment on Wednesday by the U.S. House. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer met yesterday to discuss the upcoming proceedings. McConnell says he wants the proceedings to include arguments, followed by the defense and then a vote to determine whether to hear from witnesses. Schumer says he wants to ensure the Senate hears from witnesses not interviewed in the House. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has indicated that House Democrats might not be in any rush to commit to sending the articles to the Senate until terms are agreed to.

EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE CALLS FOR TRUMP’S REMOVAL… An editorial published yesterday in a prominent evangelical Christian magazine called President Trump’s actions “profoundly immoral” and recommended his removal from office. “Christianity Today” called Trump’s efforts to pressure the government of Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter for political gain was an “unambiguous” fact. The magazine said the behavior may not be a surprise, as Trump has “dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration,” but it urged evangelicals to look at the “president’s moral deficiencies.”

SENATE PASSES SPENDING BILLS… The Senate yesterday passed a $1.4 trillion spending deal and sent it to President Trump’s desk a day before the deadline to fund the federal government. Senators voted 71-23 to pass the first package of funding about $534.4 billion. The second package passed by an 81-11 vote. The White House said Trump plans to sign the spending deal.

HOUSE PASSES USMCA… The House voted 358-41 yesterday to approve the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement following more than a year of negotiating with the White House. The agreement drew bipartisan support in a 385-41 vote. The Senate is expected to pass the agreement next year. The deal keeps much of North American Free Trade Agreement in place, but adds considerations for digital trade and requires 75 percent of vehicle parts to be made in one of the three countries to remain tariff-free and that 45 percent of car components be made by factory workers earning $16 per hour. It also increases U.S. farmers’ access to the Canadian dairy market and protects digital trade across borders.

WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATOR ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC TERRORISM… Investigators say Washington state Representative Matt Shea planned and participated in domestic terrorism against the U.S. A report commissioned by the state House found Shea took part in and promoted three instances of political violence in three different states over three years. According to the Seattle Times, one of those armed conflicts was a 2016 six-week standoff at an Oregon wildlife refuge, led by militia leader Ammon Bundy, where one protester was killed. The Republican minority leader of the state House, Representative J.T. Wilcox, said Shea has been “suspended from any role in the House Republican Caucus” and called for his resignation.

ENTERTAINMENT
WEINSTEIN TARGETED IN NEW SEXUAL-ASSAULT LAWSUIT… Harvey Weinstein is targeted in a new sexual assault lawsuit filed by former teen model Kaja Sokola. In her suit, the native of Poland claims she was just 16 years old in 2002 when Weinstein invited her to lunch but instead allegedly took her back his New York apartment “without her consent” and assaulted her. The suit filed in New York State Supreme Court also named Weinstein’s former studio Miramax, brother Bob Weinstein and its previous owner Walt Disney Co.

IN THEATERS… In “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” the surviving Resistance faces the First Order once more in the final chapter of the Skywalker saga. Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Adam Driver star in the PG-13 sequel. “Cats” tells the story about a tribe of cats that must decide every year which one gets to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life. Idris Elba, Judi Dench and Taylor Swift star in the PG film.
