CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 4,667,955 and the nation’s death toll stands at 154,860, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… White House coronavirus experts said yesterday that the U.S. is in a new phase of the outbreak, with infections “extraordinarily widespread” in rural areas as well as cities, according to White House task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx.

ASTRONAUTS RETURN IN SPACEX CAPSULE… Two NASA astronauts splashed down in their SpaceX Dragon capsule yesterday, less than a day after departing the International Space Station and two months after blasting off from Florida. The capsule carrying test pilots Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken parachuted into calm Gulf of Mexico waters about 40 miles off the coast of Pensacola. It marked the first splashdown by U.S. astronauts in 45 years.

MISSING SERVICE MEMBERS PRESUMED DEAD… The Marine Corps announced yesterday that seven Marines and a Navy sailor missing after Thursday’s sinking of an amphibious assault vehicle off the Southern California coast are presumed dead. There were 16 crew members aboard the craft when it went down. Eight Marines on board were rescued. One of them died soon after being hospitalized and two remain in critical condition.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRE PROMPTS EVACUATIONS… Nearly 8,000 people were forced to evacuated their Southern California homes after the Apple Fire in Riverside County consumed more than 20,000 acres. Authorities report 0 percent containment on the blaze, which started on Friday. There have been no injuries or deaths reported but a single-family home and two outbuildings were destroyed.

ISAIAS LASHES FLORIDA… After weakening from a hurricane to a tropical storm, Isaias regained some strength as it lashed the southeast Florida coast yesterday. As of last night, the storm was located about 65 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and was moving north-northwest at 9 mph. Storm surge warnings were issued from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to Cape Fear, North Carolina.

… Taylor Swift’s new release “Folklore” sold 846,000 copies to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart. Logic’s “No Pressure” opened in a distant second place with 221,000 units sold. Juice WRLD’s “Legends Never Die” slipped to third place on sales of 107,000 copies. Pop Smoke’s “Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon” dropped to No. 4 after selling 107,000 units. The original Broadway cast recording of “Hamilton: An American Musical” capped the top five with 71,000 copies sold.

LUKE COMBS MARRIES… Luke Combs and his longtime girlfriend Nicole Hocking in front of family at their south Florida home on Sunday, the country singer confirmed yesterday. The 30-year-old Combs had been engaged to his fiancée since 2018. They started dating in 2016.

… Five pitchers combined on the shutout as the Braves won their fifth straight. Johan Camargo homered with the bases empty.

CHI. CUBS 2 – Pittsburgh 1 (11 innings)… Javier Baez singled home David Bote with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

COLORADO 9 – San Diego 6… Daniel Murphy went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in leading the Rockies past the Padres. Ryan McMahon and Matt Kemp also went deep.

L.A. Dodgers 3 – ARIZONA 0… Clayton Kershaw (1-0) pitched three-hit ball over 5-2/3 innings and three relievers completed the Dodgers’ blanking of the Diamondbacks. L.A. got homers from Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger.

BALTIMORE 5 – Tampa Bay 1
… The Orioles pulled away to complete a sweep of the three-game series. Hanser Alberto doubled home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the seventh inning Renato Nunez and Pat Valaika homered.

Chi. White Sox 9 – KANAS CITY 3… The White Sox erupted to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to put away the Royals. Yasmani Grandal had three hits and drove in a run. Nick Madrigal went 4-for-5 with an RBI.

MINNESOTA 3 – Cleveland 1… Six pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the Twins clipped the Indians. Mitch Garver’s first homer of the season was a solo shot.

Houston 6 – L.A. ANGELS 5 (11 innings)… Alex Bregman singled home George Springer with a go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and the Astros made it stand in outlasting the Angels.

Oakland 3 – SEATTLE 2… Ramon Laureano blasted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning and the Athletics hung on to edge the Mariners. Chris Bassitt (1-0) allowed a run on three hits over 5-2/3 innings.

N.Y. YANKEES 9 – Boston 7… Aaron Judge belted a pair of homers and knocked in five runs to lead the Yankees past the Red Sox. He has gone deep in five straight games. Luke Voit also circled the bases for New York.

Cincinnati 4 – DETROIT 3
… Nick Castellanos homered twice and drove in three runs for the Reds in the doubleheader opener. Shogo Akiyama singled home the tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh inning.

Cincinnati 4 – DETROIT 0… Trevor Bauer (1-0) tossed a two-hitter in the seven-inning contest and the Reds finished off a doubleheader sweep.

Texas 9 – SAN FRANCISCO 5… The Rangers used a four-run top of the seventh inning to get past the Giants. Joey Gallo capped the uprising with a three-run homer. Shin-Soo Choo also went deep for Texas.

San Antonio 108 – MEMPHIS 106… DeMar DeRozan’s two free throws with a second remaining lifted the Spurs over the Grizzlies. Dejounte Murray had 21 points and 10 rebounds for San Antonio.

ORLANDO 132 – Sacramento 116… Nikola Vucevic powered his way to 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Magic topped the Kings. Aaron Gordon scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half.

HOUSTON 120 – Milwaukee 116… The Rockets were too much down the stretch in holding off the Bucks. They got 31 points from Russell Westbrook and 24 from James Harden.

PHOENIX 117 – Dallas 115… The Suns erased a double-digit deficit on their way past the Mavericks. Devin Booker led the way with 30 points. Luka Doncic’s 40 points and 11 assists weren’t enough for Dallas.

COLORADO 2 – St. Louis 1… Nazem Kadri found the net at the buzzer to give the Avalanche a come-from-behind win over the Blues.

Columbus 2 – TORONTO 0… Joonas Korpisalo stopped all 28 shots in his first playoff start and the Blue Jackets clipped the Maple Leafs. Cam Atkinson had a goal and an assist.

Minnesota 3 – VANCOUVER 0… Alex Slalock made 28 saves as the Wild blanked the Canucks. Jared Spurgeon found the net twice and had an assist.

NFL… Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson informed his team last night that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Assistant head coach Duce Staley will be acting head coach in Pederson’s absence. Pederson will still attempt to conduct Zoom meetings while he’s absent, the team reported.
