The Rundown for August 6, 2020

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 4,821,287 and the nation’s death toll stands at 158,171, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Florida reported a record single-day increase of 621 hospitalizations yesterday, raising the state’s total to 7,622… Social-media platforms Facebook and Twitter took action against President Trump spreading coronavirus misinformation yesterday. Facebook removed from Trump’s page a video of him claiming in a Fox News interview that children are “almost immune” or “virtually immune” as he argues for schools to reopen. Twitter briefly banned the Trump campaign’s account from tweeting after it posted the video.

DEUTSCHE BANK COOPERATES IN TRUMP INVESTIGATION… There were more indications yesterday that the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation of President Trump’s business practices is wider in scope than previously known. The New York Times reported that prosecutors last year subpoenaed Deutsche Bank for Trump’s financial records, and the bank reportedly has been cooperating. The financial institution has lent the Trump Organization more than $2 billion since the 1990s. Manhattan lawyers declared in court filings on Monday that they were investigating possible bank and insurance fraud, referencing “public reports of possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization.”

SALLY YATES TESTIFIES… Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates told the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday that President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden did not attempt to influence the FBI investigation into Michael Flynn during a January 2017 Oval Office meeting with top national security officials. Yates’ testimony was part of a Republican-led probe into the actions of the Obama administration in its final months. President Trump and his GOP allies had accused Obama and Biden of launching the investigation into Flynn. Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI his communications with Russia’s then-U.S. Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Yates said the lies were “absolutely material to a legitimate investigation.”

IOWA RESTORES FELON VOTING RIGHTS… Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds yesterday signed an executive order that restores voting rights for an estimated 60,000 of the state’s felons. Iowa was the last state in the nation that still sentenced all felons to a lifetime ban on voting. The new order makes those who have served their sentences and completed parole eligible to vote. Criminals convicted of violent crimes and sexual abuses will be obligated to make additional petitions to restore their voting rights.

STATE DEPARTMENT IG RESIGNS… State Department Inspector General Stephen Akard announced his resignation after just three months on the job. The department’s inspector general’s office said Akard will be replaced Friday on an interim basis by deputy Diana Shaw. Akard took over in May after President Trump abruptly fired Steve Linick. The firing came as Linick was leading two investigations into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, including his role in a controversial $8 billion weapons sale to Saudi Arabia. The House Foreign Affairs Committee has been investigating the firing and on Monday subpoenaed four top State Department officials.

MIGOS RAPPER ACCUSED OF RAPE
… Migos rapper Takeoff is targeted in a lawsuit filed yesterday by a woman who accused him of raping a her at a party in June. The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of California by “Jane Doe,” whose lawyer said she “fears retaliation from speaking out.” Allegations against Takeoff include sexual battery, assault, gender violence and false imprisonment. In the filing, the victim says hospital staff “observed physical evidence of forceful rape and notified the Los Angeles Police Department of the same.” The plaintiff’s attorneys say police are still investigating the incident.
