CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 4,883,582 and the nation’s death toll stands at 160,091, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Senior Trump administration officials failed to reach agreement on a stimulus bill during a three-hour meeting last night. Administration officials warned that President Trump would take executive action if no deal is reached by today… Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced yesterday morning that he had tested positive for the coronavirus — and then last night reported a second test came back negative. The reason for the discrepancy between the test results was not immediately clear.

FEDERAL TROOPS DEPLOYED TO MEMPHIS, ST. LOUIS… The Trump administration announced last night that federal law enforcement officers will be deployed to quell violent crime in Memphis and St. Louis. Attorney General William Barr said he has directed the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to increase resources to the two cities in the coming weeks. The move is an expansion of Operation Legend, which began last month with the deployment of federal troops to Kansas City, Missouri.

DHS SECRETARY DEFENDS USE OF TROOPS ON PROTESTERS… Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf yesterday defended President Trump’s decision to send federal police to cities experiencing civil unrest. Wolf testified that instigators attacked federal officers nightly, and accused local and state officials of failing to guard government properties. Government officers withdrew from Portland last week after Oregon Governor Kate Brown had called them an “occupying force” that “brought violence and strife to our community.”

JUSTICE DEPT. SEIZES PROPERTY FROM UKRAINIAN OLIGARCH.. The Justice Department yesterday moved to seize property from the owners of one of the largest banks in Ukraine for alleged money laundering. Two civil forfeiture complaints against the owners of PrivatBank, Ihor Kollomoisky and Gennadiy Boholiubov, allege that they obtained fraudulent loans and lines of credit from 2008 through 2016 and laundered billions of illegally obtained funds through a series of shell companies’ bank accounts before transferring the money to the U.S. The complaints seek the seizure of an office park in Dallas and an office tower in Louisville, Kentucky, which the Justice Department estimates are worth a combined $70 million. Kolomoisky was tied to events that led to Trump’s impeachment proceedings earlier this year after two of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani’s associates met with him to try and get a sit-down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

NY AG FILES SUIT TO DISSOLVE NRA… New York Attorney General Letitia James yesterday filed suit to dissolve the National Rifle Association. She accused the gun rights-advocacy organization’s senior leadership of violating laws governing non-profit groups, using millions from the organization’s reserves for personal use and tax fraud. James said current and former NRA leaders “instituted a culture of self-dealing mismanagement” that led to the organization’s loss of more than $63 million three years three years. The suit, filed in New York Supreme Court, names NRA executives including CEO and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, General Counsel and Secretary John Frazer, former Chief Financial Officer Wilson “Woody” Phillips and former Chief of Staff and Executive Director of General Operations Josh Powell.

TENNESSEE PRIMARIES… Democrat Marquita Bradshaw will face off against Republican Bill Hagerty in the race for the Tennessee U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Lamar Alexander. The two were declared winners in their respective primaries yesterday. Bradshaw, a Memphis environmentalist, Black activist and single mom, defeated Nashville attorney and former Army helicopter pilot James Mackler. Hagerty was victorious over Nashville trauma surgeon Manny Sethi.

… The E! network announced yesterday that it has canceled “E! News” and two other programs in a cost-cutting effort brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. “E! News,” which premiered in 1991, was canceled along with the celebrity news show “Pop of the Morning” and the interview series “In the Room.” E!’s parent company, NBCUniversal, said in June that it would shift its programming to “focus on streaming and away from traditional television.”

THE WHO PREPARES YOUTUBE CONCERT SERIES… The Who is planning a new YouTube concert series that will feature live and rare performances. The series, titled “Join Together @ Home,” will premiere on The Who’s official YouTube channel tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern. New episodes will arrive every Saturday for six weeks. Proceeds will benefit Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.

PITTSBURGH 6 – Minnesota 5
… Kevin Newman came through with a two-run pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth as the Pirates came from behind to snap their seven-game losing streak. Gregory Polanco homered for Pittsburgh.

COLORADO 6 – San Francisco 4… Daniel Murphy and Charlie Blackmon hit two-run homers during a five-run bottom of the seventh inning that sent the Rockies past the Giants. Trevor Story also went deep for Colorado.

OAKLAND 6 – Texas 4… The Athletics made it six straight wins with their defeat of the Rangers. Matt Olson homered and Khris Davis singled home two runs.

L.A. Angels 6 – SEATTLE 1… Dylan Bundy (2-1) allowed a run on four hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game victory. The Angels got homers from Max Stassi and Shohei Ohtani.

PHILADELPHIA 5 – N.Y. Yankees 4… J.T. Realmuto blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, Phil Gosselin stroked a two-run double in the third and the Phillies held off the Yankees.

CLEVELAND 13 – Cincinnati 0… Jose Ramirez homered from both sides of the plate and knocked in four runs to lead the Indians in their romp over the Reds. Carlos Carrasco (2-1) pitched one-hit ball over six innings and got help from three relievers on the shutout.

ARIZONA 5 – Houston 4… Kole Calhoun’s two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Diamondbacks over the Astros.

KANSAS CITY 13 – Chi. Cubs 2… The Royals got home runs from Whit Merrifield, Maikel Franco ad Jorge Soler in their pounding of the Cubs. The victory was their first in seven games.

ATLANTA 4 – Toronto 3… Nick Markakis’ one-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning sent the Braves past the Blue Jays. Freddie Freeman homered with a runner aboard in the first.

MIAMI 8 – Baltimore 7… Jonathan Villar went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, Brian Anderson knocked in three runs and the Marlins fought off the Orioles.

Milwaukee 8 – WHITE SOX 3… Jedd Gyorko homered and drove in three runs as the Brewers downed the White Sox. Christian Yelich legged out an inside-the-park homer and walked four times. Mark Matthias stroked a two-run single.

Milwaukee 130 – Miami 116… The Bucks erased a 17-point halftime lead to upend the Heat and clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kris Middleton scored 33 points apiece. Antetokounmpo also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Phoenix 114 – Indiana 99… The Suns topped the Pacers for their fourth straight win. Deandre Ayton had 23 points and 10 boards. Devin Booker scored 20 points and dished off 10 assists.

L.A. Clippers 126 – Dallas 111… The Clippers pulled away in the fourth quarter to get past the Mavericks. Kawhi Leonard led the way with 29 points. Paul George added 24 points. Ivica Zubak made all 10 field-goal attempts and finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

Portland 125 – Denver 115… Damian Lillard made 11 3-pointers on his way to 45 points and the Trail Blazers kept their playoff hopes alive. Gary Trent Jr. delivered 27 points off the bench.

Houston 113 – L.A. Lakers 97… James Harden piled up 39 points and 12 assists in leading the Rockets past a Lakers team that was without LeBron James. Ben McLemore dropped in 20 points.

… Goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped all 27 shots as the Canucks blanked the Wild to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Brock Boeser and Elias Petterson each had a power-play goal and an assist. Quinn Hughes assisted on all three goals.

Philadelphia 3 – Washington 1… Scott Laughton netted a pair of goals as the Flyers beat the Capitals in an Eastern Conference round robin. Kevin Hayes had three assists. Trevor Konecny set up two goals. Philadelphia plays Tampa Bay tomorrow, with the winner claiming the top seed in the East.

Vegas 6 – ST. LOUIS 4… The Golden Knights scored three unanswered goals in the third period to rally past the Blues in the Western Conference round robin. Vegas would earn the West’s top seed with a win over Colorado tomorrow.

Columbus 4 – Toronto 3… The Blue Jackets came from two goals down in the third period to upend the Blue Jackets and pull within 2-1 in the series. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his third goal of the game 18:24 into overtime.

Calgary 4 – Winnipeg 0… Cam Talbot made 31 saves at goal as the Flames shut out the Jets to win the qualifying round series in four games. Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett each scored a goal and had an assist.
